VA Tax Refund seized for deceased spouse's child support - Will my Federal refund be taken too?
Filed married filing joint and just found out my VA refund is being taken for my deceased spouse's back child support. The injured spouse form wasn't filed like it was supposed to be. My husband passed in October and child support wasnt even notified. Already called to report his passing to close the case but now Im worried about my federal refund. How can I check if theyre gonna take that too?

You need to pull your federal tax transcript ASAP to see if there's an offset indicator. You can get this from irs.gov. If you see any TC 898 codes, that means there's an offset pending. You should immediately file Form 8379 (Injured Spouse) for your federal return. Since your spouse passed away in October, you might also want to contact the Treasury Offset Program directly at 800-304-3107 to verify any pending offsets.

Quick tip: If u can prove ur spouse passed away with a death certificate, the child support office should immediately stop collection attempts. Make sure to send them official documentation
