Turbotax Form 4684 not available until 2/20/25 - need other options to file sooner
I've been loyal to TurboTax for years and don't mind the cost since it keeps everything organized and accessible when I need to look back. But I'm really frustrated right now. I just finished my entire tax return and was ready to submit when TurboTax hit me with a message saying I have to wait until 2/20/25 to file because they're not ready to process the updated form 4684. Two big questions: 1. Can I export my current year TurboTax file (.tax2024, not the regular .tax file) and import it into different tax software? 2. I really don't want to wait until 2/20 or even later to file. I'm willing to start over with different software if needed. I checked and H&R Block claims their form 4684 will be ready by 1/31/25, but I've never been a fan of their software. Unfortunately, I'm not in a state that offers DirectFile. And TaxSlayer just sounds so unprofessional to me (feels like a video game rather than serious tax software). Any recommendations or advice on what I should do? Has anyone successfully transferred their work from TurboTax to another platform mid-season?

The .tax2024 file format from TurboTax is proprietary and unfortunately can't be directly imported into other tax software platforms. Each software uses their own file format which isn't compatible with competitors. Your options are basically: 1) Wait for TurboTax to update form 4684, 2) Start fresh with another software, or 3) Use the data you've already entered in TurboTax as a reference while manually entering it into a new platform. If you need that form 4684 (Casualties and Thefts), H&R Block might be your best bet since their timeline is earlier. Despite your reservations, it's a reputable platform. TaxSlayer, despite the name, is also legitimate - they've been around for decades and handle millions of returns. You could also check FreeTaxUSA or TaxAct - both are less expensive than TurboTax and might already have form 4684 updated. Just call their customer support before switching to confirm the form is available.

•Thanks for the quick response. Super disappointing that I can't transfer the file! I've already spent hours inputting everything and hate the thought of starting over. Do you know if there's any way to at least export my data in some format that would make manual re-entry easier? Like can I generate some kind of summary report from TurboTax that I could use as a reference?

•You can print a PDF copy of your entire return from TurboTax even before filing. This gives you a complete reference document with all your entered data. Just go to the "Print Center" or similar option in TurboTax and create a PDF of your return. While you'll still need to manually enter the information into the new software, having this comprehensive reference makes it much faster than starting from scratch with paper documents. Some tax programs also have an interview format that's quicker than navigating through every form individually.

I was in a similar situation last year with a different form and found that taxr.ai really helped me switch tax software mid-season without losing my mind. I was able to upload my TurboTax PDF to https://taxr.ai and it extracted all the important data and organized it in a way that made re-entering everything into FreeTaxUSA so much faster. Their system basically reads the forms and creates a checklist of all the data points you need to transfer. It even has side-by-side comparison features that helped me catch a couple mistakes I made when transferring. Saved me hours of tedious work and I was able to file weeks earlier than if I'd waited for TurboTax to update.

•How exactly does this work? Do you have to upload your entire tax return with all your personal info? Not sure I'm comfortable putting all my financial details on some random website.

•Does it work with all tax software or just specific ones? I'm considering switching from TurboTax to TaxAct because of similar issues but wasn't sure if there was an easy way to transfer data.

•It works by analyzing the tax document structure - you upload the PDF export of your TurboTax return and it extracts the data into a checklist format. They use bank-level encryption for security and don't store your documents after processing, so it's actually safer than emailing tax docs to someone. It works with pretty much any combination of tax software. The system doesn't actually transfer data directly between programs - instead it creates a organized reference guide that makes manual entry much faster. I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA, but I know people who've used it with TaxAct, H&R Block, and even to help with paper filing. Their tech is focused on document analysis rather than specific software integration.

Just wanted to update that I tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here and it was honestly a game changer! I was dreading having to redo my taxes from scratch in a new program, but their system made transferring from TurboTax to TaxAct ridiculously simple. The document analyzer extracted everything - all my income sources, deductions, credits, and even the form 4684 info I needed. Created this super organized checklist that made sure I didn't miss anything when entering data in the new system. Took me maybe 45 minutes to rebuild my entire return instead of the 3+ hours I spent in TurboTax originally. Best part is I was able to file yesterday instead of waiting another month for TurboTax to get their act together. Already got my e-file acceptance confirmation!

If your main issue is just waiting for form 4684 to be available, another option is to call the IRS directly to ask when the form will be processed if filed now. Sometimes the forms are actually accepted by the IRS even if tax software hasn't updated yet. I spent HOURS trying to get through to the IRS last year for a similar issue until I found https://claimyr.com - they held my place in the phone queue and called me when an actual agent was on the line. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was shocked it actually worked - got through to an IRS agent in about 40 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I was experiencing before. The agent confirmed I could file with the existing form version and didn't need to wait for the software update.

•How much does that service cost? Seems like something the IRS should provide for free honestly.

•This sounds like a scam. Why would anyone pay a third party just to talk to the IRS? Can't you just keep calling until you get through?

•The service itself just handles the phone queue waiting so you don't have to sit listening to hold music for hours. The actual tax help comes directly from the IRS agents themselves, who have the most up-to-date information on form processing. Have you tried calling the IRS recently? It's literally hours of waiting, and if you call during peak times, they often don't even put you in a queue - you just get a "call back later" message and get disconnected. I tried calling six different times before using Claimyr. It's especially helpful if you're working during IRS hours and can't sit on hold for unpredictable amounts of time. When an agent is ready, you get a call and can step away for the conversation if needed.

I take back what I said about Claimyr sounding like a scam. After multiple failed attempts to reach the IRS about my form 4684 question, I broke down and tried the service. I was extremely skeptical it would work, but I was desperate after spending three different mornings trying to get through. Within 35 minutes, I got a call connecting me directly to an IRS representative who confirmed that even though TurboTax hasn't updated their system yet, the IRS is absolutely processing returns with form 4684 right now. The agent told me I could either use different software that has the updated form or actually print and mail a paper return if I wanted to stay with TurboTax but file immediately. Saved me weeks of unnecessary waiting and the stress of wondering if there was some bigger issue with my return. Sometimes it's worth getting the answer straight from the source.

I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA last year and am SO much happier. They already have form 4684 ready to go for 2025 filing season (I'm using it right now). The interface takes a little getting used to if you're coming from TurboTax, but it's WAY cheaper and handles all the same forms. The only real difference is you don't get the same hand-holding as TurboTax, but if you've been doing your taxes for years, you probably don't need that anyway. Plus their customer service is surprisingly responsive if you have questions.

•Does FreeTaxUSA handle rental properties well? That's my biggest concern with switching from TurboTax - I have three rental units and the Schedule E stuff gets complicated.

•FreeTaxUSA handles rental properties really well. I have two rental properties myself, and their Schedule E section is comprehensive and straightforward. You can track all the same expenses, depreciation calculations, and passive activity rules that TurboTax covers. The main difference is the interface is more form-based rather than interview-style for some sections, which I actually prefer since it gives me more direct control. They also have specific sections for tracking basis, improvements vs. repairs, and other rental-specific issues. The help content isn't as extensive as TurboTax, but it covers all the important rules and definitions.

Consider checking TaxAct too. They've already updated their form 4684 for the 2025 filing season. I've been using them for years after getting fed up with TurboTax price increases. They're much more affordable and their interface is clean and straightforward.

•Second this! I use TaxAct and just checked - form 4684 is definitely available. Their system isn't as flashy as TurboTax but gets the job done for about 1/3 the price.
