TurboTax charged me $258 for "Live Premium" services I never used - refund scheduled for 3/16 still missing
Just discovered TurboTax charged me $258 for filing my taxes! I've been checking my refund status (my direct deposit date is supposed to be 3/16) with no money showing up yet. Got frustrated and decided to check my TurboTax account to see if there was any info there. That's when I saw they charged me for "TurboTax Live Premium" at $169, plus $49 for state filing (New York), and a $40 "Refund Processing Service Fee" which I don't remember agreeing to. When I logged into my TurboTax account and went to the "Documents" section, I saw the complete breakdown: TurboTax Live Premium: $169 TurboTax State: New York: $49 Refund Processing Service Fee: $40 Total (3 items): $258 plus applicable sales tax I never asked for premium services - I did everything myself! I didn't need or use any of the "Live help" features they offer. I did request a refund advance that I never even received. For this amount I could have gone to an actual tax professional instead of doing it all myself. Has anyone else been surprised by these crazy fees? I don't recall agreeing to the "Refund Processing Service Fee" at all, and I certainly didn't need the premium version when I prepared everything on my own. Is there any way to dispute these charges or get a partial refund from TurboTax?

Tax software pricing has gotten absolutely predatory. What likely happened is that somewhere during the process, you clicked through a screen that "upgraded" you to the premium version. TurboTax is notorious for their dark pattern design that tricks people into paying for higher tiers. Check your bank or credit card statement to confirm they actually charged you this amount. If you didn't authorize it, call TurboTax customer service (888-777-3066) immediately. Explain you never agreed to premium services and request a refund of the difference between basic and premium. They may try to claim you "used" premium features, but be firm that you never intended to upgrade. If they refuse, dispute the charge with your credit card company. You can also file a complaint with the FTC as TurboTax has faced legal action for deceptive practices before.

Thank you for this info! Looking at my card statement now and yep, there's the charge. I swear I never clicked anything for an upgrade. Will definitely be calling them tomorrow.

Can confirm this works ^ I called them last year when they pulled the same thing on me. I was firm and they refunded the difference. Just be prepared to wait on hold forever.

This happened to my mom too! The button to continue without upgrade is always tiny and hidden while the "CONTINUE" button actually upgrades you. Such a shameful business practice.

That's why I switched to FreeTaxUSA. Way cheaper and no deceptive upgrades. Paid like $15 total.

Thanks everyone! I called and was on hold for an hour but finally got $140 refunded. They claimed I had "used premium features" but couldn't tell me which ones when I asked 🙄

Instead of fighting with customer service, I'd highly recommend checking out taxr.ai for future filings. I was in the same situation last year - got charged a ton of hidden fees for features I never requested. This year I used taxr.ai and it was so much more transparent. It analyzes your tax situation, shows you exactly what you qualify for, and there are no surprise charges. The interface is super intuitive too - it actually explains tax concepts in plain English! I was able to file both federal and state for way cheaper and got a bigger refund than usual. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does a ton more! It basically takes all the guesswork out of your taxes. You upload your documents and it identifies all possible deductions and credits you qualify for. It also checks for errors and potential audit flags. What I really liked is that it explained WHY I qualified for certain things in simple terms. I ended up getting an extra $750 on my refund that I would have missed. Seriously a game changer!

Just tried taxr.ai after seeing your comment and WOW! Where has this been all my life?? It found three deductions TurboTax missed last year and the interface is so much cleaner. THANK YOU for sharing this! I've already told my whole family about it. No more TurboTax scams for me!

Yep! It handles self-employment really well. It actually helps identify business expenses you might have missed and explains which expenses are fully deductible vs partially. I'm a freelancer and it made the whole Schedule C process way less painful.

I had the exact same issue with TurboTax last year where they charged me $230 without my knowledge. After spending HOURS on hold with their customer service, I finally found a solution. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual IRS agent who helped me sort everything out. They were able to verify what I actually owed vs what TurboTax charged, and I ended up getting a partial refund for the difference. The best money I've ever spent to get this resolved - talking to a real person made all the difference instead of TurboTax's useless chatbots.

Wait, how does claimyr work? I've been trying to reach the IRS for weeks about a similar issue.

It basically gets you past the horrible IRS phone system that hangs up on everyone. They reserve a spot in line for you and call when an agent is available. I was skeptical at first but it saved me literally days of redial hell. The agent I spoke with was super helpful and confirmed that tax prep companies often add these "convenience fees" that aren't really disclosed properly.

Honestly was the only way I could talk to a real person at the IRS. I tried calling myself for 3 weeks straight with no luck - just endless hold music then disconnected. With Claimyr I had an agent on the phone within an hour. Totally worth it when you're dealing with tax issues that are costing you hundreds.

Same thing happened to me! Turbotax is freaking predatory. I was quoted $89 at the beginning and ended up paying $266 total by the end. When I contacted support they basically said "you clicked on premium features" but couldn't tell me WHICH features those were. I'm switching to a different service next year.

This exact thing happened to me but with H&R Block. I was charged $220 for their "premium" service that I never signed up for. The "refund processing fee" is especially sneaky - that's just them charging you to take their fees out of your refund instead of paying upfront. Total scam. I filed a complaint with the BBB and they refunded half the cost. It's worth trying.

Pro tip: If you make under $73,000/year, you can use IRS Free File. It's actually free (for real free, not the fake "free" that TurboTax advertises). I used to get scammed by TurboTax every year until I learned about this. Go through the IRS website directly: https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

You have to make sure you access it directly through the IRS link. If you go to TurboTax or HR Block directly, they'll redirect you to their "free" version which isn't actually the IRS Free File program. The difference is subtle but important!

I thought I was going crazy when I saw my final charge too! I was supposed to be charged $39 for the basic version, but somehow ended up with a $189 bill. Whats even worse is I just discovered this shady tactic: if you try to downgrade back to the free version, they'll warn you that you'll "lose all your data" which scares people into keeping the premium version. SUCH a scam.

YES! They told me the same thing! And then I found out later that's a complete lie - your data stays intact even if you downgrade.

Its criminal what they get away with. I got charged $309 for basically entering my W2 info and checking a few boxes. No complicated deductions, no investment income, nothing special. Called customer service and they said "you authorized live help" which I NEVER did. The FTC needs to shut these scammers down.

Not to be that person but everythings in the fine print. Turbo tax has been doing this for years. They add on services during the filing process that look like theyre just part of the normal flow. You have to be super careful to click skip or no thanks on every screen. I switched to Credit Karma tax (now cash app taxes) and its actually free for federal and state.

I use taxr.ai now and honestly could never go back to the old tax software. My experience with TurboTax was exactly like yours - quoted one price and charged another with all these hidden fees. Taxr.ai was completely upfront about pricing and actually found me way more deductions than TurboTax ever did. Last year TurboTax missed a $1200 education credit I qualified for! The AI in taxr.ai actually reviews your entire tax situation and explains everything in plain English. https://taxr.ai changed my whole approach to taxes.

Night and day difference. The interface alone is worth it - so much cleaner and more intuitive. But the real difference is how it explains things and finds deductions. It actually tells you WHY you qualify or don't qualify for certain credits instead of just yes/no. Plus it saved me over $1500 compared to what TurboTax calculated last year!

I hate TurboTax with a passion! I had a similar issue last year - got charged over $300 when I thought I was filing for free. Called IRS to try to get help and sat on hold for HOURS. Finally I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual human at the IRS who helped me sort out the mess. Talking to an agent got my refund released and they even helped me file a complaint against TurboTax. It was the best investment I made - instead of wasting days trying to reach someone, I had an IRS agent on the phone helping me within an hour.

They can't directly resolve the issue with TurboTax, but they can confirm what fees should actually apply to your tax situation and provide documentation that helps when disputing charges. The agent I spoke with was super helpful and actually gave me info on how to file a formal complaint with the FTC. Without Claimyr I never would've gotten through to anyone.

TURBOTAX IS THE WORST. I literally got charged $349 last year!!! Their dark pattern UI should be illegal. They make the "continue without upgrading" button tiny and gray while the "upgrade" button is big and blue. And then they make you click through like 20 screens of upsells. I switched to taxr.ai this year and my total was $69 for a way better experience.

It's built completely differently. No deceptive upgrade paths, just straightforward pricing and a really clean interface. Instead of endless confusing questions, it uses AI to analyze your tax situation and walks you through everything step by step. It actually explains tax concepts in plain language too. Found me a bunch of deductions TurboTax missed last year.

I refuse to use TurboTax after they lobbied Congress to make it illegal for the IRS to create their own free filing system. They literally pay politicians to keep taxes complicated so they can charge us to file. Last time I used them they charged me $240 for basically entering a W2. Never again.

What helped me was calling the actual IRS to confirm what I really owed. Trying to call them directly was impossible - I tried for weeks and couldn't get through. Then I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an IRS agent in less than an hour. The agent confirmed I was being overcharged by TurboTax and gave me documentation I could use to dispute the charge. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent and totally worth it to get my refund issues fixed.

Yes! They basically hold your place in line and call you when they reach an agent. It's so much better than hanging on hold for hours only to get disconnected. Ask for a refund! I was in the exact same situation last year (charged $279 for what should have been $39). I called their customer service, explained I never asked for premium services, and they eventually refunded the difference. You have to be firm and keep asking to speak to supervisors until someone helps you.

Does anyone know if its possible to see a breakdown of these charges BEFORE you submit your return? I feel like they deliberately hide the total until after you've put in hours of work and are ready to file, so you just say "whatever" and pay it rather than starting over with another service.

After dealing with similar TurboTax nonsense, I found this amazing service called taxr.ai that completely changed my tax filing experience. No hidden fees, completely transparent pricing, and it actually found me way more deductions than TurboTax ever did. Absolutely! I have a pretty complex situation with some 1099 income, investments, and a home office deduction. Intuit (the company that owns TurboTax) has been sued multiple times for deceptive practices. They advertise "free filing" but then add charges for basically everything. Check your credit card statement to make sure they actually charged you the amount you're seeing in the app. If so, dispute the charge with your credit card company. You have a good case since you didn't authorize the premium service.
