TurboTax Shows 'Pending' But WMR Has No Info - Is My Return Accepted by IRS?
According to IRS Publication 1345 section 5.3, e-filed returns should receive an acknowledgment within 24-48 hours of submission. My TurboTax status currently shows 'pending', but when I check Where's My Refund tool, there's absolutely no information available. I'm concerned because I filed an amended return last year (Form 1040-X) and had significant delays. Does 'pending' on TurboTax definitively indicate the IRS has accepted my return? Or is it just in TurboTax's system waiting to be transmitted? I've checked multiple times today and still see this discrepancy between platforms.

TurboTax 'pending' status typically means different things depending on where you are in the process: • 'Pending' BEFORE IRS acceptance = TurboTax has prepared your return but hasn't yet transmitted it to the IRS or is waiting for IRS acknowledgment • 'Pending' AFTER IRS acceptance = Your return has been accepted but is still being processed by the IRS • WMR showing no information is actually normal at this stage - the WMR tool often takes 24-72 hours to update AFTER the IRS has formally accepted your return • If you just filed within the last 1-2 days, this is completely normal and not cause for concern

•Thank you for breaking this down so clearly! Isn't it frustrating how these different systems don't sync up better? I always wonder why TurboTax can't just use clearer status messages that tell us exactly where things stand.

•This is helpful, but I'm curious how this compares to other tax software platforms. When I used FreeTaxUSA last year, it showed 'transmitted' and then 'accepted' very clearly. Is TurboTax just being vague with their status updates compared to other platforms?

•I think there might be some confusion here. In my experience, TurboTax usually shows "pending" before submission, then "submitted" after you e-file, and finally "accepted" once the IRS acknowledges receipt. Perhaps the OP could clarify which specific pending message they're seeing in TurboTax?

So does TT send u an email when IRS actually accepts it? Or do u have to keep checking the TT website? I'm in the same boat rn and WMR doesn't have any info for me yet either. Filed 2 days ago and getting kinda nervous tbh.

I'm in a similar situation and was getting a bit worried about timing. I need to resolve some questions about my return before the deadline, and waiting for status updates is making me nervous. When I couldn't get through to the IRS after trying for almost 3 days, I reluctantly tried Claimyr.com to get through to an agent. I wasn't sure it would work, but I was connected to an IRS representative in about 15 minutes. They confirmed my return was in the system even though WMR showed nothing yet. If you're really concerned about your status, it might be worth considering this service: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

I was literally in this exact situation last week! Filed on Tuesday, TurboTax said pending until Thursday afternoon, then changed to accepted. WMR didn't show ANYTHING until Saturday morning. I was freaking out because I need my refund ASAP for car repairs (transmission went out, $2,300 repair bill). Just hang tight - the systems don't update simultaneously.

I'm not entirely convinced about the reliability of these third-party status indicators. The IRS Electronic Filing System (EFS) operates on a standardized acknowledgment protocol that transmits Acknowledgment Files (ACK) to authorized e-file providers. TurboTax's "pending" designation could indicate multiple internal processing statuses that don't directly correlate with IRS systems. It's technically more accurate to rely on the official IRS channels once proper propagation time has elapsed.

Think of it like ordering pizza online - the restaurant app might say "preparing your order" while the delivery app still shows nothing. Same pizza, different systems! 🍕 The IRS and TurboTax don't share the same database. TurboTax is essentially saying "we've sent your tax return to the IRS" while the IRS is still updating their systems. This is completely normal and happens to millions of filers every year. The IRS processing systems are notorious for taking time to reflect current status.

•But exactly how long should this lag between systems take? I filed on March 12th, 2024, and TurboTax showed accepted on March 13th, but WMR didn't update until March 16th. Is there a standard timeframe the IRS commits to for updating their systems after accepting a return?

•I appreciate this explanation so much. It's like when you transfer money between banks - one bank shows it's gone while the other hasn't received it yet. The money isn't lost, it's just in that digital limbo between systems.

•Wait. Does this mean we should trust TurboTax more? Or the WMR tool? Which one is more accurate for tracking?

You might want to check your TurboTax account for an actual acceptance email or notification. In my experience, TurboTax will update from "pending" to "accepted" within exactly 24-48 hours if everything goes smoothly. Then WMR typically updates 24 hours after that. If it's been more than 72 hours since filing and you still see "pending" in TurboTax (not just WMR showing nothing), I'd suggest calling TurboTax directly at their support line to verify if there were any transmission issues.

•This is good advice. Let me add some steps I follow each year that help keep track of everything: 1. After filing, save a PDF copy of your return locally 2. Note the exact date and time you submitted through TurboTax 3. Check your email daily for TurboTax notifications 4. Wait 48 hours before checking WMR for the first time 5. If TurboTax shows accepted but WMR shows nothing after 72 hours, check that you entered your information correctly in WMR This system has kept me calm through many tax seasons, even when there were delays.

I can definitely understand your concern! I went through this exact same worry pattern last year. Here's what I learned from my experience and talking to IRS representatives: The "pending" status in TurboTax generally means your return has been transmitted to the IRS but they haven't yet sent back the official acknowledgment. This is completely normal and expected during the first 24-48 hours after e-filing. Regarding your amended return concerns from last year - those delays were likely due to the complexity of Form 1040-X processing, which requires manual review. Regular returns (Form 1040) go through automated systems first, so the timeline is much more predictable. A few things to keep in mind: • WMR often lags behind TurboTax status updates by 24-72 hours • Filing time matters - returns submitted on weekends may take longer for initial processing • Peak filing season (late February through April) can cause slight delays in status updates If you're still seeing "pending" in TurboTax after 72 hours, then I'd recommend contacting their support. But given that you mentioned checking "multiple times today," you're likely still well within the normal processing window. Your return is almost certainly in the IRS queue and progressing normally.
