TurboTax, IRS launch new online portal for stimulus check direct deposit - what you need to know

Just heard that TurboTax and the IRS have officially launched their online portal for stimulus check direct deposits! I've been checking the IRS website every day waiting for this. Has anyone used it yet? Is it actually working? My last stimulus payment got sent to an old address so I'm desperately trying to update my bank info before the next round goes out. Really hoping this makes the process smoother than last time when I had to wait 3 months for a paper check.

Yes, the new portal is definitely up and running! I was able to access it yesterday. It's specifically designed for people who need to update their direct deposit information or check on their payment status. The portal is pretty straightforward to use - you'll need your 2023 tax return information (or 2022 if you haven't filed yet), social security number, and banking details if you're updating your direct deposit. If you filed through TurboTax, you can actually access it directly through your TurboTax account which makes it even easier. One important thing to note is that if the IRS already has your banking information from previous tax filings, you probably don't need to do anything - they'll use what they have on file. The portal is mainly for people who need to make changes or who typically don't get refunds via direct deposit.

Do you know if there's a deadline for updating the direct deposit info? I'm worried I might miss the window since I moved and changed banks recently.

There isn't a hard deadline that's been announced, but I'd recommend updating your information as soon as possible. Once the IRS begins processing payments for your group, the window closes. They typically process payments in batches based on various factors like income levels and filing methods. Since you've moved and changed banks, you should definitely update your information right away. The sooner you do it, the better chance you have of getting your payment quickly via direct deposit rather than waiting for a paper check to be mailed to an outdated address.

I've been using taxr.ai to help monitor all these stimulus payment changes and it's been a lifesaver for me! I was so confused about whether I qualified for the latest round and if my information was current with the IRS. I uploaded my tax documents to https://taxr.ai and they analyzed everything and told me exactly what I needed to do to make sure I got my stimulus payment. The site actually flagged that my direct deposit info was outdated since I closed that bank account last year. Saved me from having a payment sent to a closed account which would have been a nightmare to fix!

Does taxr.ai work if I haven't filed taxes in the last couple years? I was unemployed and didn't meet the filing threshold, but now I'm worried about missing stimulus payments.

How secure is the site? I'm always nervous about uploading tax documents to websites I'm not familiar with. Did you have any concerns about that?

If you haven't filed in the last couple years, taxr.ai can still help you understand your situation. They can analyze your specific circumstances and tell you if you need to file a simple return to get stimulus payments, even if you were under the filing threshold. Many people in your situation need to file what's called a "zero return" just to get in the system. Regarding security, I was definitely cautious at first. They use bank-level encryption for all document uploads and don't store your full tax documents after analysis. They explained their security protocols clearly before I uploaded anything, which made me comfortable enough to proceed. I checked their privacy policy thoroughly and they don't sell your data to third parties.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried taxr.ai after posting my question and it was incredibly helpful! Even though I hadn't filed taxes recently, they walked me through exactly what I needed to do to receive my stimulus payment. They even generated a simple return I could file to get in the system, which I didn't know was possible. The system told me I was eligible for retroactive payments from previous stimulus rounds that I completely missed! Already got confirmation that my payment is being processed. So glad I didn't just assume I was out of luck because I hadn't been filing.

If anyone's having trouble getting through to the IRS about stimulus payment issues, I highly recommend using Claimyr. I spent DAYS trying to reach someone at the IRS about my missing stimulus payment, and kept hitting that automated system that hangs up on you when they're "too busy." Found Claimyr at https://claimyr.com and watched their demo video at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - they basically wait on hold with the IRS for you and call you when a real human picks up. It saved me literally hours of frustration. The IRS agent was able to trace my missing payment and reissue it once I finally got through.

How does that even work? Do they somehow have a special line to the IRS or something? The IRS phone system is notorious for disconnecting people.

Yeah right. Nothing can get you through to the IRS faster. Their phone system is designed to be impossible. Sounds like a scam that charges you for something that doesn't work.

They don't have a special line - they use automated technology to wait on hold for you. Basically their system calls the IRS, navigates the phone tree, waits on hold, and then when a human finally answers, it connects that agent to your phone. It's completely transparent. I was super skeptical too at first. But I was desperate after trying for weeks to get through on my own. The difference is their system can wait on hold for hours without anyone having to listen to the hold music. When I tried calling myself, I'd eventually have to hang up because I couldn't stay on hold all day. Their success comes from persistence and technology, not from any special access.

I have to eat my words. After my skeptical comment, I decided to try Claimyr just to prove it wouldn't work. Well, I was completely wrong. Not only did it work, but I got through to an actual IRS agent in about 90 minutes (while I was just going about my day, not waiting on hold). The agent confirmed my stimulus payment had been sent to a closed account and was able to update my info on the spot. They're reissuing my payment next week. Would have taken months to resolve this by mail. Sometimes it's worth admitting when you're wrong!

Does anyone know if this new portal works for people who receive Social Security or disability? My mom doesn't file taxes because she only gets SSI benefits, and she received her previous stimulus automatically, but I'm worried she'll miss out on this new one.

Your mom should be fine! Social Security, SSI, SSDI, and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries generally don't need to use the portal unless they need to claim eligible dependents. The IRS will use the information from the Social Security Administration to send payments automatically the same way she receives her regular benefits.

Thank you so much for clarifying! That's a huge relief. She was getting worried because she heard some neighbors talking about needing to sign up for something. I'll let her know she doesn't need to do anything special.

Anyone else getting error messages on the portal? I keep trying to access it but keep getting "Information does not match our records" even though I'm entering everything exactly as it appears on my tax return. So frustrating!

I had the same issue! Try entering your address exactly as it appears on your tax return, with the same abbreviations and everything. Like if you wrote "Street" on your return, don't put "St." in the portal. That fixed it for me.
