TurboTax $25 Early Refund Option - Suddenly Unavailable?

Has anyone else paid the $25 fee for TurboTax's 5-day early refund option and then received a notification that it's no longer available? I'm just wondering... when did your TurboTax dashboard update with this information? Did you also get an email about it? My husband and I were really counting on getting our refund a bit earlier to cover some expenses, so I'm a little worried about the timing now. Not sure if I should be contacting TT customer service or if this is normal...

This is happening to quite a few people right now. Here's what's going on: 1. First, check your TurboTax account messages - they usually send notifications there before emails 2. Next, look in your spam/junk folder for the email - many are reporting the notification got filtered 3. The cancellation is happening because TurboTax's banking partner is experiencing delays with the IRS direct deposit system 4. You should automatically get refunded the $25 fee within 3-5 business days 5. Your refund will now follow the normal IRS timeline (typically 21 days from acceptance) Unfortunately, there's not much you can do except wait for the regular IRS processing to complete.

Thank you for breaking this down! This is way more helpful than what TurboTax customer service told me. I spent 40 minutes on hold yesterday and they just said "system issues" without explaining anything. This is actually worse than last year when they delayed my state refund by almost 3 weeks compared to filing directly with my state.

One clarification on the refund timeline - the 21-day standard processing period begins from the date of IRS acceptance, not from the date you submitted to TurboTax. Many filers are experiencing a 1-3 day gap between submission and actual IRS acceptance this year due to increased verification processes.

I'm really impressed with how detailed this explanation is! I just checked my account on March 17th and saw the cancellation notice dated March 15th, but never got an email. Checked my spam folder after reading this and there it was! Thanks for the step-by-step.

Have you checked if your refund is already being processed by the IRS despite the TurboTax early option being canceled? Sometimes the refund is already in motion but TurboTax's system doesn't reflect it properly. Did you receive an acceptance confirmation from the IRS already? What does the Where's My Refund tool show when you check it?

Not OP but having same issue. WMR shows "received" but nothing else. Does that mean IRS has it but TT just can't do the advance anymore?

I experienced this exact scenario. My tax return status in the IRS2Go app remained at "Return Received" while TurboTax silently canceled the early refund option. Upon examining my TurboTax account metadata (via browser developer tools), I could see the refund_advance_status parameter had changed from "pending" to "ineligible" approximately 72 hours after filing. The $25 fee was refunded to my original payment method 4 business days later.

This is SO frustrating!!! I paid the $25 fee and was counting on that money for my car payment. TurboTax didn't even bother sending me an email - I only found out when I logged in to check my status yesterday. I spent TWO HOURS trying to get through to the IRS to ask if there was anything they could do to expedite since I paid for a service I'm not getting. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in like 15 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was processing normally but there was NOTHING they could do about TurboTax's failed promise. I'm beyond angry about this!

According to the TurboTax support forums (https://ttlc.intuit.com/), this issue started appearing widely around March 12th. They're citing "processing delays" as the reason for suspending the early refund program. The IRS refund calendar at https://www.irs.gov/refunds shows that most electronic filers who submitted before March 15th should expect their refunds by early April, assuming no additional review flags on their returns. If you check your TurboTax account settings page, there should be a notification banner with the exact date they determined you were ineligible for the early option.

Just got off the phone with TurboTax customer service (waited 47 mins). Here's what they told me: • The early refund program was suspended on March 14th for ALL customers • All $25 fees will be automatically refunded within 5-7 business days • They're blaming an IRS processing backlog • Your refund is NOT delayed - just the advance option is canceled • No action needed on your part • They claim emails were sent to everyone but admit there were "delivery issues" Basically we're all in the same boat now waiting for normal IRS processing. Check your bank account for the $25 refund!

When did you file? I filed on March 10th. Got the cancellation notice on March 15th. No email at all. Had to log in to see it. The $25 refund posted to my card yesterday.

This whole situation is like ordering express shipping on a package, then the shipping company deciding they can't do express anymore but still keeping your package in transit. At least they're refunding the fee, but it's the timing that hurts most people. When you're counting on that money for bills or necessities, even a 5-day delay can cause real problems.

Wait, so they actually do refund the $25 automatically? I've been trying to figure out if I need to call and request it or fill out some form! Does it go back to whatever payment method you used for the TT service? I paid with my debit card so hopefully it just shows up there?

Just wanted to share some good news - despite TurboTax canceling my early refund option on March 13th, my actual refund just hit my account this morning! Isn't that ironic? The regular IRS processing actually ended up being faster than their estimated timeline. So maybe check your bank account? The cancellation might be disappointing, but the regular processing seems to be moving along pretty quickly for many people. Fingers crossed you all see your refunds soon!

I'm curious if this is related to the increased fraud prevention measures the IRS implemented this year. My tax preparer mentioned that many third-party advance options might be affected by the enhanced verification protocols. Has anyone checked their tax transcript through the IRS website? That sometimes shows processing stages that aren't visible in the WMR tool. It might give you more insight into when your actual refund will arrive despite the TurboTax early option being unavailable.
