Transcript Says 'Return Not Filed' but Shows 'Notice Sent' Date - What's Going On?

Well, this is a fun little tax mystery I didn't need in my retirement years! šŸ™„ Just checked my transcript and it's saying my return is 'not filed' but then shows 3-6-24 for a 'notice sent'. Feels like the IRS is playing games with me. Does anyone know what this actually means? Should I be worried? I'm pretty sure I filed back in February... getting a bit anxious about this mixed message. Maybe they're just testing if I'm still awake at my age? lol

This is actually a common transcript status discrepancy that can mean several things. When you see "Return Not Filed" alongside a notice date, it typically indicates one of the following scenarios: 1. Your return was received but hasn't been fully processed in the system yet 2. There was an issue with your return that triggered a manual review 3. The IRS is sending a CP59 Notice (non-filing notice) because they believe you haven't filed 4. There could be an identity verification hold (Letter 5071C) The 3-6-24 date means they've sent some type of correspondence. You should receive it within 7-10 business days from that date. I'd recommend checking your mailbox carefully and not taking any action until you receive and read that notice.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many possible explanations! The IRS website doesn't explain any of this. Thanks for breaking it down so clearly!

I had this exact situation on March 12th, 2024. Do you know if there's a way to find out which notice was sent without waiting for mail? My mail service is unreliable and I'm worried I'll miss something important.

Would calling the IRS help in this situation? Or would they just tell you to wait for the notice? I always wonder if it's worth spending hours on hold or if they'll just read from the same script we can find online.

Have u checked both acct transcript AND return transcript? Sometimes one shows info the other doesn't. Also, did u e-file or paper file? E-file usually shows up faster. Paper can take forever these days. Might explain the weird status combo ur seeing.

Good point about checking both transcripts! I had a similar situation last year where my account transcript showed a notice but my return transcript was blank. Turns out they needed to verify my identity. The letter arrived about 10 days after the date on my transcript. Not the end of the world, but definitely delayed my refund by about 6 weeks. šŸ˜…

I'm curious - if they sent a notice on 3/6, wouldn't it have arrived by now? It's been over 2 weeks. I went through something similar and my notice never arrived, but the issue was showing on my transcript. Should OP be proactive and call?

I've been through this before! The IRS mail system is so slow sometimes. I had a notice date of February 15th this year and didn't receive the actual letter until March 4th. Was panicking the whole time!

Have you tried calling the IRS to ask about this notice? I had a similar situation and spent days trying to get through on their regular number with no luck. Has anyone used Claimyr to reach them? I've heard it helps you skip the wait times when calling the IRS (https://claimyr.com). I'm wondering if it's worth trying since this seems like something that might need explaining from an actual agent?

Is Claimyr really necessary? I mean, if you call the IRS early in the morning or right before they close, you can usually get through without paying a service.

From what I've seen in the community, this combination usually means: ā€¢ The IRS computer system doesn't show your return as processed yet ā€¢ They've sent you a notice asking for information or action ā€¢ You need to wait for the notice before taking action ā€¢ This is NOT necessarily an audit or serious problem ā€¢ Most common resolution is identity verification Don't panic until you get the actual notice. The date just tells you when it was generated, not what it contains.

I'm not convinced this is as simple as others are making it sound. The timing is concerning - notices sent in early March often relate to potential fraud flags or serious filing errors. I'd be preparing for a more complicated resolution process than just a simple verification.

Oh come on, you're making it sound way worse than it probably is! Most of these notices are routine! I got a similar notice last year and it was just asking me to verify my identity online. Took 15 minutes to resolve and my refund came two weeks later. Let's not scare people unnecessarily!

Had this exact issue last month. Got the notice. It was identity verification. Completed it online. Return processed within 10 days. Refund arrived 3 days later. Just wait for the mail. Follow instructions. Don't stress too much.
