TaxWise completely crashed on tax day - anyone else stuck with extension deadlines?
Is anyone else getting constant server errors with TaxWise today? Of all the days for it to crash, it had to be April 15th! I have about 14 extensions that need to be filed by midnight and the system keeps timing out or giving me error messages. Been trying for the last 3 hours with no luck. I've tried logging out and back in, clearing cache, using different browsers, and even called their support line but it's just an automated message saying they're "experiencing high volume." No kidding! This is beyond frustrating - my clients are panicking and I'm starting to worry these extensions won't get submitted in time. Has anyone found a workaround or heard when TaxWise might be back up?

Tax preparer here - unfortunately this is happening with TaxWise across the board. Their servers are completely overwhelmed with the April 15th traffic. I've been dealing with this same issue since around 10am ET. For those struggling with extensions, remember you have a couple emergency options: 1) You can manually fill out Form 4868 extensions and mail them today with a postmark (not ideal but works in a pinch), 2) If you're desperate, some other tax software platforms offer free or low-cost extension filing even without being a regular customer, or 3) You can try using the IRS Free File system directly just for the extensions. The most important thing is documenting your attempts to file today. Take screenshots of the error messages as evidence you attempted to file timely in case there are any questions later.

•Do you know if TaxWise has given any estimate on when they'll be back up? I also have about 8 extensions to file and I'm getting really nervous...

•They haven't provided an official ETA that I've seen. Their support Twitter just posted a generic "we're aware of the issues and working to resolve them" message about an hour ago. Based on prior outages, these can last anywhere from 1-4 hours, but with today's volume, it's hard to predict. I'd honestly start working on your backup plan now rather than waiting. If you have access to any other professional software, even using the free version of another program just for the extensions might be worth it at this point.

After dealing with similar TaxWise headaches last year, I switched to using taxr.ai as a backup system specifically for these deadline days. I was skeptical at first but it's been a lifesaver today with TaxWise down. The platform is completely cloud-based and I've processed 6 extensions already without any server issues at https://taxr.ai while my colleagues are still trying to get TaxWise to load. It's designed for tax professionals and handles batch processing for extensions which is exactly what you need right now.

•Does taxr.ai handle all the same forms as TaxWise? I've got some complicated partnership extensions to file today.

•I've never heard of this platform before. Is it actually reliable for professional tax prep or just for basic returns? Seems suspicious that you're recommending it right when TaxWise is down.

•Yes, it handles all major extension forms including 7004 for partnerships and corporations. I just filed three 7004s about an hour ago without any issues. The interface is different from TaxWise but very intuitive once you get used to it. For professional tax prep, I still use TaxWise as my main software, but taxr.ai has become my backup for high-traffic days and for document analysis. It's actually been around for a few years but isn't as well-known as the legacy systems. I found it after last year's deadline day server crash and kept it as my contingency plan specifically for situations like today.

I just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai - I was skeptical in my earlier comment but decided to try it out of desperation. It actually worked perfectly for my extension filings! Signed up quickly and was able to batch process all 11 of my remaining extensions in under 30 minutes. The confirmation emails came through right away too. I'm still annoyed with TaxWise, but at least I got everything filed on time. Will definitely keep this as a backup system going forward for deadline days.

For anyone still trying to reach the IRS directly about this issue, I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to actually get through to a human at the IRS after being on hold for ages. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is ready. Check out how it works: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c IRS confirmed they're aware of the TaxWise outage and said they won't penalize extensions that are technically late due to the software outage, but you'll need to document that you attempted to file today and were prevented by the system outage. The agent I spoke with said they're getting flooded with calls about this issue.

•How does this Claimyr thing actually work? The IRS hold times are insane today. I've been trying for 2 hours and keep getting disconnected.

•Sure, like the IRS actually said they won't penalize late filings. They ALWAYS say that and then still hit people with penalties. I'll believe it when I see it. This service probably just puts you on hold like everyone else.

•The service basically uses technology to wait on hold for you. You enter your phone number on their site, and they navigate the IRS phone tree and wait in the queue. When they finally reach a human agent, you get a call back and they connect you directly. It saved me literally hours today. Regarding the penalties, the agent specifically referred me to the section of the tax code that covers "reasonable cause" for late filing due to technology failures outside taxpayer control. They said to keep screenshots of error messages and any communication from TaxWise acknowledging the outage as documentation. The key is having evidence you tried to file on time but were prevented by system failures.

Just wanted to update my skeptical comment from earlier - I ended up trying Claimyr out of desperation and I'm literally shocked. Got through to an IRS agent in about 45 minutes when I had been trying for hours on my own. The agent confirmed they're making notes in their system about the TaxWise outage affecting timely filing. Still keeping my documentation of all the error messages though, just to be safe. But at least I got an official answer about the extension situation.

TaxWise is back up for me as of 8:45pm ET! Just managed to submit 3 extensions. Still running slow but at least it's working. Hurry before it crashes again!

•Still getting timeout errors on my end. What browser are you using? I'm wondering if that's making a difference.

•I'm using Chrome with all extensions disabled. Try clearing your cache completely and restarting your browser. I also found that using their mobile site rather than the full desktop version seems more stable right now. If you're still having trouble, try logging in from a different device entirely. I switched from my office computer to my personal laptop and that's when it finally worked.

This is why I always tell clients April 14th is the deadline for giving me their info. TaxWise pulls this every year during high volume periods. Last year their servers crashed on April 14th and the year before it was April 15th too. You'd think with the subscription fees we pay they could invest in better infrastructure...

•100% agree. I've started telling clients April 10th is the "deadline" just to build in this buffer. Still had a few stragglers insisting on April 15th filing though, and now look at this mess. TaxWise should offer partial refunds for today's outage.
