Tax software alternatives to TurboTax and H&R Block? Need recommendations for W-2 and 1099 filing
Hey everyone! I'm trying to find a good tax filing software that isn't TurboTax or H&R Block this year. I've got two W-2s from my jobs plus a 1099 for some freelance work I did, and I need something reliable that won't take forever to use. I've used the big names before but I'm curious what else is out there that might be better (or cheaper lol). If you've used other tax software for filing with both employee and contractor income, what would you recommend? And why did you like it better than the well-known options? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I've been using FreeTaxUSA for the past 4 years and honestly can't recommend it enough for situations like yours with both W-2s and 1099 income. The federal filing is free, and state is only around $15 which is way cheaper than TurboTax or H&R Block. The interface isn't as flashy as TurboTax, but it's straightforward and asks all the right questions to make sure you're getting your deductions. It handles 1099 income really well with a good section for business expenses if you have any. It's also incredibly reliable - I've never had an issue with rejected returns or accuracy.

•Does FreeTaxUSA handle rental income too? I have W-2s and a 1099 like OP but also have a rental property. And how long did it take you to complete everything? TurboTax took me like 4 hours last year which was ridiculous.

•Yes, FreeTaxUSA absolutely handles rental income with a dedicated section for it. They guide you through all the rental-related deductions like mortgage interest, property taxes, depreciation, and maintenance expenses. I usually complete my return in about 90 minutes total, even with multiple income sources. The interface is more streamlined than TurboTax - less animations and marketing stuff slowing things down. They save your info from previous years too, which speeds things up even more if you're a returning customer.

I tried TaxSlayer, TurboTax and H&R Block before discovering taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it's been a game-changer for me. I was always stressed about whether I was entering my 1099 info correctly, but taxr.ai actually reads and extracts the information from your tax documents automatically! I just uploaded my W-2s and 1099s, and it pulled all the numbers perfectly. I was especially impressed with how it handled my 1099 income and suggested deductions I hadn't even thought about. Their AI walks you through everything step by step, and the interface is super clean and easy to follow.

•Does it handle more complicated situations? I have W-2s and 1099s but also some investment income and a side business. Would taxr.ai work for me or is it mainly for simpler returns?

•How secure is it though? I'm always nervous about uploading my tax documents to new services. Do they have good encryption and privacy practices? That's my biggest concern with trying new tax platforms.

•It absolutely handles more complex situations including investment income and side businesses. The system is designed to work with all tax scenarios, from simple to complex. It has dedicated sections for investment income that guide you through capital gains, dividends, and other investment-related items. For side businesses, it offers comprehensive expense tracking and deduction suggestions based on your industry. Security is a top priority for them. They use bank-level encryption for all document uploads and data storage. All information is encrypted both in transit and at rest, and they have a strict privacy policy that prohibits selling your data. They're also SOC 2 compliant, which is an important security certification for handling financial information. I was hesitant at first too, but their security credentials are actually better than some of the bigger names.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried taxr.ai after posting my security concerns and I'm actually really impressed! The security checks during signup were thorough (which I appreciate), and the document scanning feature is incredible. It pulled all the data from my W-2s and 1099-MISC perfectly without me having to type anything. I was worried it wouldn't handle my investment income properly, but it did that flawlessly too. The step-by-step guidance made everything super clear, and I ended up with a bigger refund than last year because it found some deductions I missed before. Definitely going to use this again next year!

If you're struggling to get questions answered about your filing like I was, check out Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). It's not a tax software itself, but it literally saved my return this year. I was stuck with questions about how to handle my 1099 income that none of the software programs could answer clearly. After waiting on hold with the IRS for HOURS over multiple days, I found Claimyr and they got me connected to a real IRS agent in under 15 minutes! There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent was able to answer all my questions about my W-2 and 1099 reporting requirements, which made choosing and using the right software much easier.

•Wait, how does that even work? The IRS phone lines are always jammed. Are you saying this service somehow gets you through the phone queue faster? I don't understand how that's possible.

•Sounds like BS honestly. I've tried everything to get through to the IRS and nothing works. How could some random service magically get you to the front of the line? They probably just keep you on hold the same amount of time and charge you for it.

•It works by using an algorithm that navigates the IRS phone system and holds your place in line. When an agent is about to answer, you get a call connecting you directly. It's not magic - it's smart technology that deals with the hold time so you don't have to. I was skeptical too before trying it. But the difference is they have automated systems doing the waiting instead of you sitting on the phone for hours. I spent 6+ hours over 3 days trying to get through before using Claimyr. With their service, I got connected in about 12 minutes. The IRS agent I spoke with answered all my questions about reporting my 1099 income properly, which no software could clearly explain.

Ok I need to eat my words. After posting my skeptical comment, I decided to try Claimyr because I was desperate to ask about a weird 1099 situation I had. I fully expected it to be a waste of money but I was WRONG. I got connected to an actual IRS person in about 15 minutes! I was shocked. I've literally spent entire days on hold before. The agent walked me through exactly how to report my income correctly and which forms I needed to file. This seriously saved me from what would have been a major headache. So now I'm using TaxAct (which is great for W-2 and 1099 income btw) and was able to input everything correctly thanks to the advice I got. Sometimes being proven wrong is a good thing lol.

CashApp Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax) is completely free for federal AND state returns. I've used it for 3 years now with W-2s and 1099s without problems. The interface is clean and it handles self-employment income pretty well. TaxAct is another good option that's cheaper than TurboTax/H&R Block but still very comprehensive. Their interface for handling 1099 income is actually better than TurboTax in my opinion.

•Does CashApp Taxes handle cryptocurrency transactions? I did a bit of trading last year along with my regular job and some freelance work, so I need something that can deal with all of that.

•CashApp Taxes has basic support for cryptocurrency transactions, but it's somewhat limited. You'll need to enter your transactions manually or import a summary from your exchange. For more complex crypto situations with lots of trades, you might want a more specialized solution. For your combination of W-2, freelance, and crypto income, TaxAct might actually be the better choice. Their crypto reporting tools are more robust and they integrate with several popular crypto exchanges for easier importing. They've really improved their crypto support over the last couple years as it's become more common.

Don't sleep on OLT (OnLine Taxes)! It's $9.95 for both federal and state which is crazy cheap. I've used it for years with W-2s and 1099-MISC income. Interface looks like it's from 2005 but it gets the job done accurately.

•Have you ever had your return audited using OLT? I'm always worried the cheap options might miss something or not be as thorough.

•Just checked out OLT - that price is insane! But their website looks super dated. Does it handle Schedule C for self-employed people well? And how's the user experience? I don't mind basic interface if it works properly.
