Refund mailed on April 12th 2023 to Northern California - how long should I wait before contacting IRS?

My tax refund was sent by mail on April 12th 2023. I opted to have a paper check instead of direct deposit. I'm in Northern California and getting a bit nervous since I've never had it take this long before. The IRS website says not to contact them until May 10th if I haven't received it yet, but I'm worried it might have gotten lost somewhere. Anyone know how long paper refunds typically take to arrive in NorCal? Never had any problems in previous years but this time seems different.

Luca Bianchi

When a refund is issued by mail, it generally takes 5-7 business days to arrive after the IRS sends it. However, USPS delays can extend this timeframe. Since your refund was mailed on April 12th, you should have received it by now under normal circumstances. If you're concerned, here are some steps you can take: • Check your refund status on the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool to confirm it was actually mailed • Contact USPS to see if they can provide any information • If you still don't receive it by May 10th (the IRS-provided date), call the IRS at 800-829-1040 The IRS can initiate a refund trace if your check hasn't arrived. They'll determine if the check was cashed. If not, they'll issue a replacement. If someone else cashed it, they'll investigate further. In the future, direct deposit is much faster and more secure than paper checks.

Thanks for the detailed response! I did check Where's My Refund and it does confirm it was mailed on the 12th. I guess I'll try to be patient until the May 10th date, but it's stressful waiting on money I was counting on.

This happened to me last year! IRS said my check was mailed but it never showed up. Had to wait the full waiting period before they'd do anything

Definitely go with direct deposit next time. I used to get paper checks and had all sorts of problems. Haven't had a single issue since switching to DD.

I was in this exact situation last year. Trying to find answers online was driving me crazy - reddit posts, Facebook groups, IRS pages - nothing gave me a clear picture. I ended up using taxr.ai and it was seriously a gamechanger. The tool analyzed my transcript, showed exactly what was happening with my refund, and explained all the codes in plain English. It even predicted when I'd get my check based on my location! No more detective work piecing together random forum advice. https://taxr.ai saved me so much stress.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript! It interprets all those confusing codes and explains what they actually mean for YOU specifically. It also shows you exactly where your refund is in the process and gives you a timeline. When I used it, it accurately predicted my check would arrive 2 days later - and it did! Best part is it explains everything in normal human language instead of IRS jargon. Total lifesaver when you're anxious about your refund!

another tax tool? does it cost money or what's the catch?

No catch really. Yeah it costs something but compared to the stress of waiting and not knowing what's happening with thousands of dollars, it was 100% worth it for me. I couldn't get an answer from the IRS directly for weeks - this solved it in minutes.

After dealing with a similar situation (refund mailed March 1st), I spent HOURS trying to get someone on the phone at the IRS with no luck. Finally used claimyr.com to connect with an actual human being at the IRS. It was honestly the best money I ever spent - got a callback within an hour and the agent confirmed my check had been mailed but gave me additional info that the website didn't show. Turns out there was a minor issue with my address format that would have delayed it. They fixed it on the spot and my check arrived 4 days later. Highly recommend if you need to actually speak to someone.

wait what is this claimyr thing? never heard of it and need to talk to someone at IRS asap

It's this service that somehow gets you past the IRS phone system and gets you a callback from an actual agent. You don't have to sit on hold for hours or keep calling back. I was super skeptical but desperate after trying for 3 days to reach someone. Worked exactly as promised.

sounds to good to be true tbh... another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

I felt the same way but was at my wits end. The catch is you pay for the service, but honestly after wasting entire days trying to get through myself, it was worth every penny. My refund was several thousand dollars so the peace of mind alone was worth it.

OMG I used this too! Literally saved my sanity. Was on the phone with an agent in 20 mins after trying for DAYS on my own.

Here in NorCal (Sacramento area) mine took about 9 business days last year. This year it was only 6 days. I think it depends a lot on which processing center sent it and your local mail facility. Give it a few more days before you start worrying too much.

My refund check was lost in the mail last year and it was such a NIGHTMARE. The IRS made me wait a full 6 weeks before they'd even start a trace. Then another 8 weeks for them to confirm it wasn't cashed and issue a replacement. Total of 14 weeks from original mailing date until I got my replacement check. My advice? Start the trace process the SECOND they allow you to (May 10th in your case).

Zara Shah

Oh no, that sounds horrible! Did you call them or go through the website to start the trace process?

Had to call. You can't start a trace online. Took me 4 hrs to get through to someone. Looking back, I should've used one of those IRS calling services people talk about here. Woulda saved me half a day of my life lol

Mail service in California is notoriously slow right now. I'm in SoCal but my sister is up north and we're both experiencing huge delays with important mail. My tax refund was supposed to arrive in 5-7 days but took almost 3 weeks. Don't panic yet.

Refund checks can be slow, but they ususally arrive within 2-3 weeks. If you still haven't recieved it by the May 10th date, definitely call them. The IRS can do a trace on the check to see if someone cashed it (hopefully not) or if it's still floating around somewhere.

This is the right answer ⬆️ Also, OP if you moved recently or had any address changes make sure the IRS has your current info

No address changes, I've been at the same place for 3 years. But thanks for the suggestion!

Try claimyr.com - it's the only way I could get through. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after months of waiting. Worth it to finally get answers.

Anyone who chooses paper check over direct deposit is asking for trouble tbh. The IRS even recommends direct deposit because of how many paper checks get lost. Not trying to be harsh, but switch to direct deposit next year and avoid this headache altogether.

Zara Shah

Yeah, lesson learned for sure. I've just always done paper checks and never had issues before. Definitely switching next year.

Some people don't have bank accounts or have other valid reasons for paper checks. Not everyone has the privilege of easy banking access. Just saying.

Try calling your local post office directly. Sometimes they can check if there's a package or letter being held for some reason. I had this happen once where they had attempted delivery but needed a signature, so it just sat there. Worth a shot!

For people in this situation, understanding exactly what's happening with your refund is critical. After years of tax prep work, I've found that taxr.ai is the most comprehensive tool for decoding your tax transcript and understanding exactly where things stand. It shows you precisely what's happening with your refund and eliminates all the guesswork. https://taxr.ai has saved countless clients from anxiety and confusion when dealing with refund delays.

not falling for another tax 'hack'... these never work

This isn't a hack - it's an analysis tool. It looks at your actual IRS transcript data (the same info IRS agents see) and interprets it in plain language. I've been doing tax work for 11 years and have never seen anything as useful for explaining what's actually happening with someone's return.

I was skeptical but tried it after seeing it mentioned here. It actually showed me that my refund was adjusted (reduced by $143) before being issued, which the Where's My Refund tool never explained. At least now I know why the amount was different.

Last year my check was mailed to my old address even tho I had updated my info with the IRS. Check to make sure they have your current address on file! You can do this by looking at your tax transcript online.

I'm in Sacramento and my check took 11 days last year. But I have a friend in San Francisco who waited almost 3 weeks for hers. I think NorCal mail is just slow in general.

That actually makes me feel better - I'm in the Bay Area too. Hoping it's just mail delays!

Would informed delivery from USPS help in this case? I've been using it and it shows pictures of all mail coming to me that day. Might give you peace of mind to see when it's actually arriving.

Dont wait til May 10! Call them now and get ahead of this. So many checks get lost and the longer you wait, the longer youll be without ur money. The IRS has 90 million backlogged returns and terrible customer service. Be proactive.

Calling now won't help. They legitimately won't start a trace until the required wait period is over. I tried last year and they just told me to call back after the date. Waste of time.

In this situation and tired of waiting? Use claimyr.com to get a direct line to an IRS agent. I was in the same boat with a paper check that never arrived. Used their service and got a callback from the IRS in 45 minutes. The agent filed a trace on my missing check right away and I had a replacement within 3 weeks. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for days on my own.

The IRS says 4 weeks is normal for paper checks - I know that doesn't help much but just wanted to share the official timeline. If it's approaching 4 weeks, then definitely prepare to call on May 10th.
