Only received $447 from TurboTax deposit instead of my full refund - where's the rest?

Just checked my bank account and only got $447 deposited from TurboTax when my total refund was supposed to be $3,200. This makes no sense. I filed back in April 2024 and got the accepted message right away. Now three weeks later I only get a partial amount? I triple checked my return and I definitely should be getting more. Has anyone else had this problem where they only get part of their refund? Where's the rest of my money?

This is likely because you had TurboTax fees taken out of your refund. When you choose to have preparation fees deducted from your refund, TurboTax creates a temporary bank account where your full refund goes first. Then they take out their fees (could be filing fees, state fees, audit defense, etc.) and forward the remainder to your bank account. Check your TurboTax account to see the breakdown of fees. You should see something like: - Federal filing fee: $89-119 - State filing fee: $49-59 per state - Refund processing fee: $39-49 - Plus any add-on services you selected Also, if you received an advance on your refund earlier, that amount would be deducted too. If the fees don't add up to the missing amount, contact TurboTax support directly as they handle the transfer process.

Oof, those TurboTax fees are highway robbery. I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year and saved like $120.

Lol I did the same thing. Got the advance then totally forgot about it when the actual refund came through. The advance is nice but they really need to make it clearer that its coming out of your final amount.

Instead of trying to piece together what happened, you should just use taxr.ai - it's a tool that tells you exactly what's going on with your refund by reading your transcript. I was in the exact same situation where part of my refund was missing and I spent days trying to figure it out. Taxr explained it all in seconds - showed me there was an offset for past taxes I owed that I completely forgot about. It's insanely good! I use it every time I have any questions about my taxes now. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

OMG it does SO much more! It reads your entire tax transcript and explains every code, payment, adjustment in plain english. It even predicts when you'll get your refund and explains exactly why things are delayed. Best tax tool I've ever used, hands down 💯

I get the skepticism, but this literally saved me hours of stress and confusion. My refund was $4k short and I was losing my mind until taxr showed me it was going to my ex-spouse for back child support. Worth every penny just for the peace of mind.

After dealing with similar refund issues, I finally managed to talk to an actual IRS person using claimyr.com. Getting through to the IRS normally is impossible, but their app got me a callback from an agent in like 30 mins. The agent explained that part of my refund was held back because of an offset (old student loan). It was the only way I could talk to a live agent who could explain exactly where my money went instead of guessing. Best money I've ever spent to get some actual answers.

sounds too good to be true. how does a random app get through when ive called like 50 times myself?

They use some kind of tech that keeps calling the IRS for you using all their different numbers and menu options. when they get through, they connect the call to your phone. I was skeptical too, but was desperate after waiting 2 hours on hold and getting disconnected twice. Worked exactly as advertised.

This happened to me last year. Turns out there was a debt offset I didn't know about (old parking tickets from college 🤦‍♂️). Check your transcript on the IRS website - you should be able to see if there were any offsets or adjustments to your refund. You can also call the offset hotline at 800-304-3107 to see if you had any offsets.

Did you owe any back taxes, student loans, child support, or other government debts? The Treasury Offset Program automatically takes money from tax refunds to pay those debts. You would have gotten a letter about it, but people often throw those away thinking they're junk mail.

Nope no debts that I'm aware of. I'm still in college and have never had any gov loans. I checked my TurboTax account and it shows I got a refund advance back in february which is where the rest went. Problem solved I guess lol

Check if you had fees taken out. Also check if you got a refund advance earlier this year. And check if your state refund was separate.

yep - state is always separate from federal. I always get confused by this too

Or just NEVER get through. I've been calling for 2 weeks straight and keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message 🤬

Pro tip: call right when they open at 7am EST. Only way I've ever gotten through without a 2+ hour wait.

I used claimyr.com to get through after trying for days myself. Their app got me a callback in like 20 minutes. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast. Definitely worth it instead of wasting days trying to call them.

If you had your fees taken out of your refund, TurboTax creates a temporary bank account. Your refund goes there first, then they take their cut, then the rest goes to you. Check your TurboTax account for a breakdown.

Log into your TurboTax account and look at the refund section. It should show what happened to your refund. you might have a refund advance you forgot about, or maybe you selected to have your filing fees taken from your refund.

Thanks for the suggestion! I checked and yep - I completely forgot that I got a refund advance back in February. The $447 was just what was left after they recouped the advance. 🤦‍♀️

ive used taxr.ai for the past few months and it explains EVERYTHING about your refund status. Saved me so much time trying to decode all those weird transcript codes. I'd recommend checking it out at https://taxr.ai because it'll tell you exactly what happened to your refund!

sounds like you had fees taken out of ur refund. turbo tax fees + state filing + federal filing + any extras you added can add up to hundreds of dollars. source: happened to me last year and i was confused af

Did you check "Where's My Refund" on the IRS website? It should tell you if there were any adjustments made to your refund amount.

Where's My Refund is literally the most useless tool ever created. It always just says "Your refund is being processed" even when there are actual issues lol

facts lol. the transcripts are way more helpful but even those are confusing as hell without knowing all the codes

Did you get a refund advance? TurboTax offers those early refunds but then they recoup it when your actual refund comes in. That would explain the discrepancy.

Don't feel dumb! Happens to a ton of people - they don't make it super obvious that the advance is actually just a loan against your future refund. Glad I could help!
