Offset question: Filing separately from spouse - will they take from both of us?
Filing separately this year but my spouse and I have an offset. Not sure if they'll take it from both our refunds or just one. Anyone have experience with this? Really need to know what to expect before filing.

Tax pro here - if the offset is joint (like shared student loans or tax debt), they can take it from either refund. If its individual (like one persons student loans), they'll only take it from that person. You can call the Treasury Offset Program hotline to check what type of offset you have.

•1-800-304-3107. Call that number and follow the prompts. It'll tell you exactly what offsets are linked to your SSN

Hey guys just wanted to drop in and say I had the same question last year and used taxr.ai to figure this out. It analyzed my transcript and showed me exactly what offsets were affecting me and how much they'd take. Saved me so much time vs calling the IRS. Its only $4.99 and totally worth it https://taxr.ai

•100% legit! It breaks everything down and even shows you exactly when to expect your refund after the offset. Way better than sitting on hold with the IRS for 3 hours lol

Quick tip - if its for student loans make sure ur loans arnt in default before filing. Could save u from the offset completely

•Form 8379 - tells IRS not to take ur part of refund for spouse's debt. But only works if debt isn't joint
