Need help getting IRS tax extension - what's the process?
Hey everyone, I need some advice. I'm trying to get an extension for my taxes but I'm not sure how to go about it. Has anyone here dealt with this before? What's the best way to request an extension from the IRS? Any tips or experiences would be really helpful!

I've been through this before. The easiest way is to file Form 4868. You can do it online or by mail. It gives you an automatic 6-month extension. Just remember, it's an extension to file, not to pay. If you owe taxes, you still need to estimate and pay by the original deadline to avoid penalties.

This is good advice. I did this last year and it was pretty straightforward. Just make sure you dont miss the extended deadline!

Quick question - does this work for state taxes too, or just federal?

@profile 3 It depends on your state. Some states automatically give you an extension if you get a federal one, others require a separate form. Check your state's tax website to be sure.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Wow, that sounds interesting. How long did you have to wait before they connected you?

@profile 6 It took about 2 hours, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. @profile 7 Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical too, but it worked for me. You can check out their website for more info.

Pro tip: If you're expecting a refund, you don't actually need to file for an extension. The deadline is only strict if you owe money. But always double check with a tax professional to be sure!

Has anyone tried using tax software for extensions? I've heard some of them offer this service for free.

Yeah, I used TurboTax last year to file my extension. It was pretty easy and didnt cost anything extra.

I prefer FreeTaxUSA. They have a free extension filing option too and their interface is less cluttered than TurboTax imho.

Just a heads up, if you're self-employed or have a more complicated tax situation, it might be worth talking to a CPA about your extension. They can help make sure you're estimating your taxes correctly to avoid penalties.
