My refund just hit bank account after IRS trace showed up - Timing seems connected to calling the trace number?

Finally got my refund today! I use H&R Block/Liberty Tax. Gulf Coast region. I noticed a trace code appeared on my transcript yesterday around 9pm. I saw a phone number (800) 779-7728 mentioned in another forum for checking on traces, so I decided to call it. The weird thing is that literally within an hour after I hung up, the money deposited into my account. Not sure if calling that number actually triggered something or if it was just a coincidence, but sharing in case it helps anyone else waiting on their refund.

The 800-779-7728 number is the IRS Refund Trace Department. When you call this number, you're essentially making direct contact with the department handling your trace. While correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation, the timing suggests your call may have prompted them to review your case quickly. For anyone else experiencing refund delays, here's what's happening: • A trace code appearing on your transcript means the IRS has initiated a trace on your refund • This typically happens after certain timeframes (6 weeks for direct deposit, 8 weeks for paper checks) • Calling the trace department can sometimes expedite the process • The department can see if your refund was issued but not received • They may need to cancel the original refund and reissue it If you're stuck waiting, it's worth calling this number - but be prepared with your filing information, social security number, and filing status.

Thanks for the breakdown! I've been waiting 9 weeks now. Did you need to have your trace code ready when you called?

You don't necessarily need the trace code, but having your transcript info helps. They can look up your account with just your personal info (SSN, DOB, etc

Last time I tried calling the IRS I was on hold for 2 hours and then got disconnected 😩 Any tricks to actually get through?

Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It calls for you and gets u in the queue so you don't waste time on hold. Got me through to an agent in 20 mins when I was trying for DAYS on my own!

For real? Is it expensive? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point...

Honestly it's the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered. My refund was stuck for 3 months and after talking to an agent they fixed it in 10 minutes. Totally worth it.

I was in a similar situation with my refund stuck in limbo for weeks. Instead of spending hours trying to figure out what was happening on my transcript, I used taxr.ai and it explained exactly what was going on with my return and what the codes meant. Saved me so much headache trying to decode everything myself! It even gave me a timeline prediction that turned out to be spot on. I use it every time I need to check my transcript now because the IRS website is so confusing. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It analyzes your whole transcript and explains every code in plain english. It also gives you a timeline prediction for your refund and tells you if there are any issues you need to address. Way more helpful than trying to google every code and figure it out yourself!

Just tried it and WOW! Literally answered every question I had about my transcript in seconds. Been staring at these codes for weeks with no clue what they meant. This should be pinned in every tax group honestly.

did u have to give them all ur personal info? seems sketchy

No actually - you just upload the transcript you download from the IRS. You already have that document, it just analyzes it. Way better than the hours I spent on reddit trying to figure out what every code meant!

After dealing with a similar situation, I finally got someone to help me release my refund by using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was stuck on hold forever trying to reach the IRS directly but this got me a callback with an actual human who fixed my issue in minutes. The lady I spoke with was able to verify what was happening with my refund and pushed it through. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast - would have been waiting another month otherwise.

Does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to the IRS for weeks.

100% worked for me. I was skeptical at first too but I was desperate after trying 13 times to get through on my own. The agent told me my refund had been flagged for review, but it was a system error and she removed the hold right away.

It's not a miracle - it just gets you through the phone system. You still talk to the same IRS agents. But it saved me from the hold time nightmare. My refund came 3 days after I talked to someone.

I don't think calling that number did anything tbh. Its prolly just coincidence. The IRS systems are all automated and theres no magic button they push when you call. I got my refund out of nowhere after waiting 4 months without calling anybody.

This has happened to me before! It's like the act of calling somehow triggers something in their system. Not saying it's guaranteed but I've had this exact experience twice now where I call about a missing refund and suddenly it appears within hours. The IRS works in mysterious ways lol

Same here! I think they have some flag in the system that gets triggered when you call. My theory is they prioritize ppl who are actively following up.

Or maybee they just process refunds in batches and it's completely random timing 🤷‍♀️

what does the trace code look like on transcript? I want to check if I have one too

On mine it was code 971 followed by a 846 with the refund amount. Also had a date next to it.

Code 971 is an Notice Issued code, and 846 is a Refund Issued code. If you see those together with recent dates, your refund is probably on the way!

Just checked and I don't have either of those codes yet 😭 just stuck on 570 for weeks

570 means they're holding your refund for review. You should try to call them directly or use something like taxr.ai to analyze what's happening. It helped me understand when my return had a similar hold.

Can yall beleive we have to jump through all these hoops just to get OUR money back from the goverment?? its ridiculous that we even need to be sharing phone numbers and tips just to get what is rightfully ours. The whole system is a joke.

preach 🙌 and then they charge us interest if we're late but they can take 6+ months to give us our refunds with zero consequences

And they wonder why everyone hates dealing with taxes. The IRS is literally stuck in 1995 with their technology

I filed in February and still nothing. No trace code. No updates. Transcript hasn't changed in 3 months. Starting to think my refund went to a black hole.

Have you tried calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service? They can help if your refund is significantly delayed beyond normal processing times.

I tried calling the advocate line but they said they're not taking new cases unless its a hardship. Might try that trace number OP mentioned

If you need to talk to an actual IRS person try Claimyr (claimyr.com). It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying. Found out my return had been flagged for identity verification but they never sent me the letter!

What information do you need to have ready when calling that number? I wanna try but don't wanna get stuck not having something they ask for.

Andre Laurent

They asked for my SSN, filing status, and the refund amount. Also might want your bank info handy if you did direct deposit.
