Louisiana State Tax Verification Process - Anyone Experienced This?
I received a notice from Louisiana Department of Revenue requesting verification of my state taxes. As an independent contractor, I'm trying to understand this process systematically: 1. Filed my federal and state returns on March 1st 2. Received federal refund without issues on March 15th 3. Got letter from Louisiana requesting verification on April 2nd 4. Submitted requested documents on April 5th 5. No updates since then Is this a standard procedure for Louisiana specifically? Has anyone else gone through this verification process with them? I've filed in Louisiana for 3 years and this is the first time I've encountered this. Trying to remain patient but it's frustrating when they're holding my refund with no timeline provided.

I think this might be part of Louisiana's identity verification process... I've seen this happen to a few people this year. From what I understand, they're being more cautious with returns, especially for self-employed individuals. It could possibly be related to their new verification system that was implemented around the beginning of 2024, but I'm not entirely sure. The timeline can vary, but in most cases I've observed, it takes about 4-6 weeks from document submission for them to complete the review.

•Do you know if there are specific triggers for these verifications? I'm wondering if certain deductions or credits are more likely to prompt this review in Louisiana specifically.

•Has anyone had success contacting their verification department directly? I'm trying to find the most efficient channel to check status rather than their general helpline.

This is probably part of their identity theft prevention measures. Louisiana might be, and I'm not 100% certain on this, but they might be one of the states implementing stricter verification protocols this year. I believe you should be able to check your refund status on the Louisiana Department of Revenue website under "Where's My Refund" section. It might, in some cases, provide information about verification holds. If your documents were properly submitted, it could potentially take up to 60 days for processing, though many are completed sooner.

•I've been through something similar with Louisiana last year. They asked me to verify my identity by submitting copies of my driver's license and a utility bill. After I sent everything in, it took about 5 weeks before my refund was released. Have you tried checking their online portal for status updates?

•Did you receive any confirmation after submitting your documents on April 5th? When I went through this on February 10th, they sent an acknowledgment email within 48 hours.

•Thank you for this information! I've been so stressed about this verification letter. At least now I know what to expect timeline-wise.

Be careful with these state verification requests. Last year when I got one from Louisiana, I almost missed the deadline because the letter went to my old address. I learned from that experience that if you don't respond within their timeframe (I think it was 30 days), they can deny your refund completely and you'd have to file an appeal. Make sure you keep copies of everything you sent them and proof of when you submitted it. I ended up waiting almost 3 months for my refund after verification.

•I really appreciate this warning. I've made copies of absolutely everything - my 1099s, expense receipts, and even took screenshots of the confirmation page when I uploaded documents. Better safe than sorry with 3 months of waiting!

Has anyone tried calling the Louisiana Department of Revenue directly? I spent two full days trying to get through their phone system last month for a similar issue. Ended up using Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an actual person. Saved me hours of redial attempts and waiting on hold. Worth the fee to finally get answers about my verification status. Don't they realize we need our refunds? Who has time to keep calling all day?

I went through this exact verification process with Louisiana in February! They were checking my W-2 information. What worked for me was uploading all requested documents through their online portal AND sending copies via certified mail (just to be safe). I also included a cover letter listing everything I was submitting with my case number clearly marked. My refund was processed exactly 28 days after they received everything. The key is making sure you submit every single document they ask for - if anything is missing, they won't tell you, they'll just keep your case on hold.

•I'm a bit concerned because the letter I received wasn't very specific about what documents they needed. Did your letter list exactly what to submit? Mine just said "verification documents" which seems vague.

•Have you checked the Louisiana Department of Revenue website for additional information? Sometimes they have specific forms that need to be completed for verification that aren't mentioned in the initial letter.

According to Louisiana Administrative Code Title 61, specifically LAC 61:I.1701, the Department of Revenue has authority to request verification of any information provided on your return. This is part of their standard review process, especially in cases where they've identified potential discrepancies or when random selection occurs. The statute allows them up to 60 days to process these verifications, though they're not strictly bound by this timeframe. Have you considered checking if there's a taxpayer advocate service in Louisiana similar to the federal one?

Louisiana has been doing this a lot more this year. It's not just you. They're targeting independent contractors specifically because of increased fraud in that category. The verification is legitimate but their communication about the process is terrible. Don't expect any updates - it will just suddenly complete one day. Make sure you're checking your status online at least weekly because they won't notify you when it's done.

One thing nobody mentioned yet - if you're verifying business expenses as an independent contractor, make sure you've included your Schedule C from your federal return in what you sent them. I forgot to include mine last year and it delayed my verification by an extra month! 😅 Also, if you used any special credits like the Earned Income Credit or education credits, those tend to trigger verification more often. Good luck! *crosses fingers you get your money before hurricane season preparations start*

I went through this exact same process with Louisiana last year as a freelance graphic designer! The verification is definitely becoming more common - they're cracking down on independent contractor returns because of fraud concerns. A few tips from my experience: 1) Keep checking their online portal religiously - mine updated randomly on a Tuesday with no notification, 2) If you claimed any home office deductions or business use of vehicle, make sure you included supporting documentation for those specific items, 3) The 4-6 week timeline mentioned above is pretty accurate, but it can stretch longer if they need additional clarification. Don't panic if you hit the 6-week mark - mine took 7 weeks total. The waiting is the worst part, but Louisiana does eventually process these. Hang in there!

•This is really helpful to know! I'm also a freelancer and got my verification letter last week. Quick question - when you say "supporting documentation" for home office deductions, what specifically did they want? I claimed about 15% of my home for my office space but I'm not sure what proof they're looking for beyond the calculation itself.

I'm going through something very similar right now! Got my verification letter from Louisiana on March 28th and submitted everything on April 1st. Like you, I'm an independent contractor (freelance writer) and this is my first time dealing with this process. From reading through everyone's experiences here, it sounds like Louisiana has definitely ramped up these verifications for self-employed folks this year. I've been checking their online portal every few days but no updates yet. The uncertainty is definitely stressful - especially when you're counting on that refund! Thanks for starting this thread, it's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this waiting game. Hopefully we both hear back soon!

•Welcome to the Louisiana verification waiting club! 😅 I'm dealing with something similar - got my letter about 3 weeks ago and still waiting for any kind of update. It's really frustrating how they don't give you any timeline or status updates beyond "we received your documents." At least from reading everyone's experiences here, it seems like 4-8 weeks is pretty normal for this process. Hang in there - sounds like we're all in the same boat this year with Louisiana being extra thorough on independent contractor returns!

I'm currently going through this same verification process with Louisiana! Got my letter on March 20th as a freelance consultant and submitted all documents on March 25th. Still waiting for any updates. What's really frustrating is how vague their initial letter was - just said "additional verification needed" without specifying exactly what triggered it. I ended up submitting everything I could think of: Schedule C, 1099s, bank statements, receipts for major business expenses, and even my business license just to be thorough. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and nerve-wracking - reassuring to know this is happening to lots of independent contractors this year, but nerve-wracking about the potentially long wait times! Has anyone found any pattern to when they actually update the online portal? I've been checking daily but it still just says "under review.
