Just spoke with IRS - They're reviewing returns for refund amount verification
Just got off the phone with a helpful person this time! Apparently most people's returns are getting reviewed because they're double checking the refund calculations, especially related to the Child Tax Credit! The agent said they're having issues with the Where's My Refund website, so everyone who sees 'processing' should keep checking their bank accounts. Also heads up - the site only lets you check 3 times before it locks you out for the day. Hope this info helps someone else in the waiting game!

Thanks for sharing this info. I've been checking WMR obsessively for 3 weeks now and it's still stuck on processing. Good to know they're doing additional verification on many returns this year. Did they happen to mention how long these additional reviews typically take?

This matches what I'm seeing in the tax prep community. The IRS is doing additional verification on returns claiming certain credits. It's not necessarily an audit - just additional screening. Their systems are definitely overwhelmed right now, which explains the website issues.

I was in the same boat last week! The WMR tool kept showing processing but my refund suddenly appeared in my account. The website updates are definitely lagging behind the actual processing.

If you're trying to understand what's happening with your return, I'd recommend checking out https://taxr.ai - it helped me decode my transcript when I was stuck in processing. It explains all those confusing cycle codes and tells you what's actually happening with your return behind the scenes. Saved me a ton of stress trying to figure out what all those numbers meant.

Is that site legit? I'm always wary of third-party tax sites.

Totally get the concern. I was skeptical too, but it just reads your transcript and explains the codes - doesn't ask for any personal info beyond what's already on your transcript. Way more helpful than the generic IRS explanations.

How long did you have to wait on hold to speak with someone? I've been trying to get through for days and can't get past the automated system.

Not OP, but I was in the same situation trying to reach someone about my delayed refund. After wasting hours on hold, I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 25 minutes. They confirmed my return was just waiting in the verification queue and nothing was wrong. Worth it to finally get a straight answer instead of the automated messages.

I got lucky this time and only waited about 45 minutes. But last week I tried three different days and couldn't get through at all. The phone system is completely overloaded right now.

Did they say anything about people who filed in January? I filed on January 29th and I'm still stuck on processing. Starting to get worried something's wrong with my return.

Filing date doesn't seem to matter much this year. My sister filed in February and got her refund in 8 days. I filed January 24th (first day possible) and I'm still waiting. It seems totally random which returns get pulled for additional review.
