I've attempted transmitting my TurboTax return 3 times but keep getting an error - any solutions? TurboTax support just says to refile

I'm getting so frustrated with this TurboTax situation! I've tried to submit my return THREE separate times now and keep hitting the same error message when transmitting. It's some technical issue that stops my return from going through to the IRS. Each time I contact TurboTax support, they basically shrug and tell me to just delete everything and start over with a new filing. This sounds like a scam. There's no way to skip the IRS phone lines. Everyone has to wait. And why would you need this when you can just keep trying TurboTax support?

Basically, yes - they have a system that waits on hold so you don't have to. You enter your phone number, and it calls you when an actual IRS agent picks up. Then you're connected directly to the agent. I wasted 3 hours on hold before trying this, and it saved me from having to sit through that again. It's definitely not skipping the line - you still have the same wait time as everyone else. The difference is you don't have to personally sit there listening to the hold music. As for TurboTax support, they often can't help with IRS-side issues or account flags. They can only see what's happening within their own system, not what's in the IRS database.

Ok I need to eat my words from my previous comment. After continuing to get nowhere with TurboTax's useless "just refile" advice, I broke down and tried that Claimyr thing. It actually worked exactly as described. I got a call back about 1.5 hours later and spoke to an IRS rep who explained that my account had a verification hold because of some identity theft protection measure. Apparently my address change triggered it since I moved this year. The TurboTax error message gave ZERO indication this was the issue. Had to answer some verification questions with the IRS agent and they removed the hold. My return went through on the next try. So yeah, sometimes you actually do need to talk to the IRS directly when software support doesn't have the answer.

Try checking if maybe you have special characters in your name fields or address. I had a similar transmission error and it turned out the apostrophe in my last name (O'Brien) was causing the issue. I removed it, resubmitted, and it went through fine!

Could line breaks or extra spaces in the address field cause this too? I noticed TurboTax sometimes adds weird formatting when you copy/paste addresses.

Absolutely! Any unexpected characters including extra spaces, line breaks, or even certain special characters like &, #, or / in address fields can cause transmission errors. The IRS system is pretty old and picky about formatting. If you copy/pasted any information, it's worth going back through and manually retyping it to make sure there aren't hidden characters causing problems.

Has anyone tried using a different tax software instead? I gave up on TurboTax after having similar issues and switched to FreeTaxUSA. My return went through on the first try with no problems.

I second this! FreeTaxUSA is way less buggy and so much cheaper. TurboTax kept upselling me on features I didn't need, and still couldn't get my return to transmit properly.
