TurboTax completely lost my tax returns from 2019, 2020 and 2021 - need help recovering

I'm honestly at my wit's end right now. I just spent close to 3 hours going back and forth with TurboTax customer support trying to recover my tax returns from 2019, 2020, and 2021. According to them, these returns are completely GONE from their system. Like, vanished into thin air. No explanation, no solution, just "sorry about that." I've been using TurboTax for years and always trusted them to keep my records. Now I'm panicking because I need these returns for a mortgage application and they're telling me there's absolutely nothing they can do. I tried going directly to the IRS website to download my returns, but the ID.me verification process was a complete nightmare. I uploaded my license, took selfies, provided all the requested info, but it kept saying it couldn't verify my identity. The only option they gave me was to have physical copies mailed, which will take forever. I also tried calling the IRS directly to explain that TurboTax lost my returns, but couldn't get through to a human being after waiting for what felt like an eternity. Is there any way to file some kind of official complaint against TurboTax with the IRS? Does anyone have experience recovering lost returns? I'm desperate here and have a closing date coming up soon!

Tax professional here - this is unfortunately more common than you'd think with online tax software. First, don't panic. You have multiple options to recover your tax information: 1. While TurboTax may have "lost" your returns in their system, the IRS definitely has them. Requesting by mail is actually reliable - they usually arrive within 10-14 days, not "forever." You can request transcripts of your tax returns for free using Form 4506-T or get actual return copies using Form 4506 (though this has a fee). 2. Check your email from those filing years - TurboTax usually sends confirmation emails with PDF attachments or download links when you file. 3. Look through your computer files - many people save local copies without realizing it. 4. If you paid a filing fee to TurboTax using a credit card, find those statements as proof of service for those years. 5. For your mortgage application, most lenders will actually accept tax transcripts from the IRS rather than full returns, and these can sometimes be obtained more quickly.

Thanks for the quick response! I checked my emails already and couldn't find any PDF attachments for those years. I've searched my computer too - nothing. The weird thing is I can see my returns from 2018 and 2022, but those three years in between are just gone. For the transcripts, is that something mortgage lenders typically accept? And do you know if those are faster to get than the full returns? The ID.me verification completely failed me online, so I'm stuck with the mail option either way.

Yes, mortgage lenders absolutely accept tax transcripts - they often prefer them because they can't be altered and come directly from the IRS. They actually show most of the important information lenders need to verify income. For getting transcripts quickly, you have a few options even if ID.me didn't work. You can call the IRS transcript request line directly at 800-908-9946 - it's automated and doesn't require speaking to a person. You can also try visiting a local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in person - they can print your transcripts on the spot, but you'll need to schedule an appointment first.

I had an extremely similar issue with TurboTax last year and discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) after hours of frustration. They specialize in recovering and analyzing tax documents even when the original provider loses them. I uploaded my basic info, and they were able to retrieve not just the forms but a complete analysis of three years of returns that TurboTax had somehow "lost" from my account. The best part was they could extract the exact information my mortgage lender needed without waiting for physical mail from the IRS. They generate official-looking documentation that satisfied my lender's requirements completely.

How exactly does this work? Can they actually access IRS records directly or are they just helping organize what you already have? I'm suspicious of any third-party claiming they can get your tax info faster than the actual IRS.

Do they handle state returns too? I'm in a similar situation but I specifically need my state returns from 2020 and 2021 for a rental application, and TurboTax is giving me the runaround saying they only keep records for 3 years.

They don't access IRS records directly - what they do is use a combination of credential recovery and record retrieval systems. They work with multiple tax preparation companies and have developed ways to recover information even when the customer-facing systems say it's "lost." In my case, TurboTax claimed they couldn't find my returns, but taxr.ai was still able to recover them through their backend systems. Yes, they absolutely handle state returns too! They recovered both my federal and state returns from all three years I needed. Their system is specifically designed to work with all the major tax software platforms and they understand how each one archives data differently.

Just wanted to follow up - I tried taxr.ai after seeing this thread and it actually worked! I was skeptical at first because my TurboTax rep had been so adamant that my returns were just gone forever. The taxr.ai system asked for my TurboTax login credentials and some verification info, and within about 6 hours they had recovered ALL my missing returns, including the state ones I needed. The documents they provided were perfect for my rental application - they even included a verification page that explained how the documents were recovered, which my landlord accepted without question. Saved me weeks of waiting for mailed IRS transcripts!

If you're still trying to talk to someone at the IRS directly, I had the same problem last year and discovered a service called Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They basically hold your place in the IRS phone line and call you back when an actual human picks up. Check out how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was super skeptical at first, but after waiting on hold for 3+ hours by myself multiple times, I gave it a shot. They got me connected with an IRS agent in about 45 minutes, and I was able to explain the situation about my lost returns from TurboTax. The agent walked me through setting up an appointment at my local office where they printed my transcripts immediately.

Wait, that's actually a thing? How does it work - do you just give them your phone number and they somehow hold your place in line? What about all the verification questions the IRS asks?

This sounds like a scam. Why would I pay a third party when I can just keep calling the IRS myself? Also, giving your info to some random company to talk to the IRS seems like a terrible idea from a security perspective.

You enter your phone number on their website, and they use an automated system to navigate the initial IRS phone tree and wait on hold. When an actual IRS agent answers, their system calls you and connects you directly to that agent. You're the one who answers all the verification questions - they just save you from the hold time. I totally get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But after wasting entire days trying to get through myself, the time saved was absolutely worth it. They don't actually access any of your tax information or personal details beyond your phone number. They're just getting you to the front of the phone line, then you handle everything directly with the IRS agent.

I need to apologize and follow up on my skeptical comment. After another frustrating 2-hour wait on the IRS line that disconnected me, I broke down and tried Claimyr. It actually worked exactly as described. I got a call back in about an hour, was connected directly to an IRS representative, and got my transcript issue resolved in minutes. The agent confirmed they could send me electronic transcripts of my 2019-2021 returns through a secure one-time link since I was having ID.me issues. The whole process took less than 10 minutes once I was connected. Wish I'd known about this service years ago instead of wasting days on hold!

I just wanted to add that TurboTax's policies on data retention are actually pretty terrible. They only guarantee they'll keep your returns for 7 years, but in practice, their system "loses" returns much more frequently. Something similar happened to me, and when I pressed their customer service supervisor, they admitted they had a system migration in 2022 that caused many accounts to lose data from 2019-2021. They won't publicly admit this though and keep giving people the runaround.

Is that actually legal though? Aren't they required to keep tax records for a certain period of time since they're an authorized e-file provider? Seems like there should be some regulation about this.

There's a difference between what's legally required and what they promise customers. Tax preparers are required to keep certain information for their compliance purposes, but that doesn't mean they're required to make it available to customers indefinitely. Their terms of service (which nobody reads) actually states they only "strive" to maintain access to returns for 7 years but make no guarantees. It's buried in the fine print. The IRS requires them to keep certain records, but that's for audit purposes, not customer convenience.

Has anyone tried the TurboTax Audit Defense team? I remember when I filed, I paid extra for some kind of protection plan that supposedly included keeping records longer. Wonder if that would help in this situation?

TurboTax Audit Defense is completely separate from their data retention policies. It's basically just insurance that provides representation if you get audited. I paid for it too thinking it included document storage, but when I called about missing returns, they told me it was completely different departments and services.
