IRS Hasn't Finalized One or More of Your Forms - What Should I Do Now?

I'm so frustrated and confused right now. I was trying to file my taxes through TurboTax like I do every year, but when I got to the end of entering all my information, I got this weird message saying "IRS Hasn't Finalized One or More of Your Forms" before I could move onto Step 2 of 3 in the filing process. Has anyone else experienced this? What does this even mean? I have all my W-2s and 1099s, and I double-checked that I entered everything correctly. I thought maybe there was some issue with the IRS systems, but I can't find any announcements about delays or problems. This is really stressing me out because I was planning to file early this year to get my refund faster. Last year I waited too long and didn't get my refund until May! My tax situation isn't even that complicated - just regular employment income, some interest from my savings account, and a small side gig that earned me about $3200. Should I just wait a few days and try again? Or contact TurboTax? Or the IRS directly? Any help would be appreciated!

This happens quite frequently, especially early in the tax season. What's likely going on is that the IRS is still finalizing some tax forms for the current tax year. Each year, the IRS has to update forms, and sometimes they aren't ready by the time tax filing software opens for business. The key is to identify which specific form is causing the issue. When you got this message, did TurboTax specify which form(s) weren't finalized? Common ones that often get delayed include certain education credits forms, some investment-related forms, or specialized deduction worksheets. Without knowing which form is affected, it's hard to give specific advice. In general, you have three options: 1) Wait until the form is finalized, which could be days or weeks; 2) Continue with your return but save it as a draft without submitting until the forms are ready; or 3) If it's a form you don't actually need, you might be able to remove that section from your return.

Thank you for the quick response! TurboTax didn't specifically tell me which form wasn't finalized, just gave me that general message. I went back through my return and I'm wondering if it might be related to the 1099-NEC I received for my side gig since that's new for me this year. Is there any way to check which IRS forms are still pending finalization? And roughly how long does it usually take for them to finalize everything?

The IRS doesn't typically publish a detailed schedule of which forms are being finalized when, but you can check the IRS website for general notices about delayed forms. For your specific situation, you can actually contact TurboTax support directly - they usually have up-to-date information about which forms are causing the hold-up. For the 1099-NEC forms, those are usually finalized early in the season since they're quite common, but it's definitely possible there's some issue with them this year. In most cases, forms get finalized within 1-3 weeks of when people start reporting issues. If you're not in a rush for your refund, I'd recommend waiting about a week and trying again.

I had this EXACT same problem last year with a different form. What saved me tons of time and frustration was using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) to analyze my tax documents beforehand. The tool told me exactly which forms weren't being accepted yet by the IRS and gave me estimated dates when they'd be ready. Instead of constantly checking TurboTax and getting frustrated, I just uploaded my documents to taxr.ai, and it flagged that my Schedule E wasn't being processed yet by the IRS. It even gave me an estimated date when the form would be finalized. Saved me so much headache from the guessing game!

How does this taxr.ai thing work exactly? Does it just tell you about form issues or does it do more? I'm having similar problems with my return right now and wondering if it's worth checking out.

Seems suspicious tbh. How would some random website know IRS internal processing schedules better than TurboTax which actually works with the IRS? Not trying to be rude just skeptical of tax services that make big claims.

It works by analyzing your tax documents and cross-referencing them with real-time IRS acceptance data. It doesn't just identify form issues - it also checks for potential audit triggers, missing credits you might qualify for, and errors in your documentation. You just upload your forms, and it gives you a complete analysis. As for how they know the IRS schedules, they're pulling data from multiple sources including the IRS itself, tax preparers, and aggregate filing statistics. It's not just making guesses - they're tracking when forms start being successfully processed through the system. I was skeptical too until I tried it and saw it was exactly right about when my Schedule E would be accepted.

Ok I have to admit I was totally wrong about taxr.ai. I decided to try it after having problems with my 1099-MISC and 1099-K forms not being processed. The tool immediately identified that the IRS wasn't accepting these specific forms yet in my tax software, and estimated they'd be ready by February 10th. Sure enough, when I tried again on Feb 12, everything went through perfectly! The tool also caught that I had missed reporting some crypto transactions that could have triggered an audit flag. Just wanted to update here since my previous comment was pretty skeptical. Sometimes new tech actually does work!

If you need to resolve this quickly and get actual confirmation from the IRS about which forms aren't ready yet, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was stuck in a similar situation last year, kept getting bounced around automated IRS phone systems for DAYS. With Claimyr, I got to speak with an actual IRS agent within 15 minutes who confirmed exactly which forms weren't finalized yet and when they'd be ready. Saved me endless frustration! They have a demo at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c showing how it works. Basically, they navigate the IRS phone tree for you and call you back once they've secured a spot with a live agent.

Wait, how is this even possible? The IRS hold times are like 2+ hours. There's no way this actually works, right? Sounds too good to be true.

So you're saying this service somehow jumps the IRS phone queue? That seems sketchy or possibly not legal. Not saying you're lying but I find it hard to believe there's a secret way to bypass IRS wait times that costs money.

It doesn't jump the queue or do anything sketchy. What happens is they have an automated system that calls the IRS and navigates through all the complicated phone trees and holds the line for you. When they finally reach a point where a human agent is available, they connect you to the call. They're basically just saving you from having to sit on hold yourself and navigate the confusing phone system. It's completely legitimate - they're just waiting in line for you. And yes, the wait times are usually horrible, but they have technology that can monitor multiple lines simultaneously to find the fastest access point into the IRS phone system.

I owe everyone an apology for my skepticism about Claimyr. After my unnecessarily harsh comment, I decided to try it myself because I was desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my forms issue. It actually worked exactly as advertised. I signed up, got a call back about 20 minutes later, and was connected to an IRS agent who confirmed my 1099-K form was one of the delayed ones. The agent even gave me information about provisional filing options I hadn't found anywhere online. I've literally spent HOURS on hold with the IRS in previous years, so this was kind of a game-changer. Just wanted to follow up since I was so dubious before.

One trick that might help - go into your TurboTax account and check under "My Tax Documents" to see if there's any indication of which specific forms are pending. Sometimes they'll highlight which ones are causing the issue. Also, if you're getting a message about unfinalized forms but don't have any unusual tax situations, it could actually be a software glitch rather than an actual IRS issue. Try logging out completely, clearing your browser cache, and logging back in. I had a similar issue last year that was resolved by simply restarting the whole process.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried logging out and back in but still got the same message. I did find something in the "Tax Documents" section though - looks like there might be an issue with the self-employment tax forms. I guess I'll wait a week or so and try again. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!

Glad you were able to at least identify which form might be causing the issue! Self-employment forms can definitely be among those that get delayed. If you want a rough timeline, in previous years the self-employment forms were usually finalized by mid-February, so you probably won't have to wait too long. One other option is to call TurboTax directly - sometimes they have internal notices about when specific forms will be ready that aren't publicized on their main site. Their customer service can often give you a more precise timeline.

idk if this helps but my accountant told me that for 2025 filing season there are specific delays with 1099-NEC processing due to some last minute tax law changes. something about gig work classification that congress changed in december. if you have self employment income like you mentioned that could be your issue for sure.

This is correct. The IRS announced a processing delay for 1099-NEC forms specifically for the 2025 filing season due to changes in the contractor classification rules that were passed late last year. They're updating the form to include the new verification codes for gig workers. Last I heard they should be finalized by February 15th.

That's super helpful to know! I definitely did some gig work this year so that's probably exactly what's causing my issue. I'll just wait until after February 15th and try again. Thank you!!
