Identity Verification Making Transcripts Show N/A - Could Wait Until April?

Just got hit with the identity verification thing and now my transcripts are showing N/A and WMR has that dreaded 'take action required' message. It feels like my tax return is stuck in quicksand! I heard we might not see our direct deposits until April, which is like telling a thirsty person they can have water next month. I know some people say verification doesn't usually take 9 weeks, but that's what the IRS rep told me. I've got three kids and bills stacking up like Jenga blocks - I need this refund! I've verified everything they asked for, so they better not drag this out unnecessarily. Anyone else in the same boat? Hopefully it's not really going to take that long.

The N/A transcript and 'take action required' status are normal after identity verification. IRS systems need time to reprocess your return after verification. Current data shows most verified returns are completing in 21-35 days, not 9 weeks. The April timeline is worst-case scenario for complex verification cases. Check your transcript daily - look for cycle codes appearing which indicate processing has resumed.

So it's like waiting for a pot to boil after you've turned the heat back on? I verified last week and was hoping for faster movement. Is there any way to tell if they've actually started reprocessing my return or if it's still sitting in the verification queue?

Thank you for the technical breakdown. I appreciate how you've explained the timeline expectations versus worst-case scenarios. It's refreshing to see actual data rather than anecdotal claims about processing times.

I'm somewhat surprised by the complexity of this process. My verification last year seemed to take forever - probably about 28 days, give or take a few days. The transcript was N/A for most of that time, then suddenly everything appeared at once. I guess the systems need time to talk to each other?

I'm concerned about the implications of these verification delays on families waiting for refunds. 21-35 days might not seem long to the IRS, but that's a significant financial strain for many taxpayers counting on those funds. Appreciate the realistic timeline information though.

Did you complete the ID verification online through ID.me or did they send you a letter requiring you to call in? I'm feeling so anxious about my own verification process and wondering if different methods have different processing timelines! 😰

I went through this exact situation last month. First, I verified through ID.me online. Then I had to wait exactly 7 days before my transcript updated. Next, I saw a 570 code appear, followed by a 971 three days later. Finally, after 16 days total, I got my DDD with an 846 code. The whole process was nerve-wracking but followed a predictable pattern.

Thanks for asking this! I've been wondering the same thing. Last year I had to verify by mail and it took FOREVER - like 2 months. This year I'm hoping to do it online if I get flagged again.

While I'm not a tax professional, I believe that according to IRS Publication 5027, the verification method shouldn't technically affect processing time, though in practice, online verification through ID.me tends to be processed more quickly than phone or mail verification, which may require manual review by an IRS employee.

Good question. Method matters. Online is faster. Phone takes longer. Mail is slowest. IRS prioritizes digital.

Just wanted to update everyone. I was told April 15th as a potential date, but that's only if there are additional issues they find. The rep explained that once verification is complete, they still have to run the return through normal processing which can take 2-3 weeks. My transcript was N/A for exactly 11 days after verification, then suddenly updated on March 2nd with all my info. Now showing processing date of March 18th.

Thank you for sharing this timeline data point! It's helpful to track real verification-to-processing examples during this tax season.

Did you receive any other notices or letters between completing verification and seeing your transcript update? I'm wondering if there's any communication we should expect during this waiting period! 🤔

Your experience matches what I've been seeing with verification cases this season. The 11-day refresh period is fairly typical for the IRS systems to update after verification is completed. The March 18th processing date suggests you should see a deposit shortly after that date.

Only 11 days? You got lucky! Most people I've talked to are waiting 17-21 days minimum. Did you have any credits or deductions that might have simplified your return processing?

After my verification last month, I waited EXACTLY 14 days with no movement. Called the IRS 37 times and couldn't get through. Used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in 22 minutes. The agent confirmed my verification was complete but my return was in a secondary review queue that would take another 30 days! Without that call, I'd still be checking WMR daily with no idea what was happening. If you're stuck in verification limbo for more than 10 days, you need to talk to an actual human at the IRS - Claimyr is worth every penny to skip the 2+ hour hold times.

I'm a bit confused... when you verified your identity, did you receive any confirmation that the verification was successful? I'm in a similar situation but I'm not sure if my verification actually went through properly.

Has anyone who verified received an actual email confirmation? The IRS website says we should get one, but I completed verification 8 days ago and still haven't received anything official.

When I verified last year, I got a confirmation screen but never received an email. Isn't it strange how the IRS expects perfect documentation from us but can't seem to follow their own communication procedures? My return eventually processed though, so I wouldn't worry too much about the missing confirmation.

I just went through this whole verification mess and got my refund yesterday! Timeline: verified on February 7th, transcript showed N/A until February 26th, then suddenly updated with a 570 code. According to https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-tax-record the 570 is normal after verification. Three days later got 971 code (notice issued). Then on March 3rd, transcript updated with 846 code and refund hit my account March 8th. Don't lose hope - it's moving, just slowly!

Did your WMR tool update at the same time as your transcript, or did one update before the other? I'm checking both obsessively and wondering which is more reliable.

Was your refund the full amount you expected, or did they make any adjustments after the verification process? I'm worried they might find something to reduce my refund during this extended review.

Has anyone noticed that verification cases seem to follow a pattern? My tax preparer handles about 50 clients who needed verification this year. Almost all of them had their transcripts update within 14-21 days after verification. The ones who verified online through ID.me were faster (average 14 days) than those who had to call in (average 19 days). And here's the interesting part - returns with Child Tax Credit seemed to take 3-5 days longer than those without. Anyone else seeing similar patterns in their experience?

This data about CTC returns taking longer is extremely valuable information. I appreciate you sharing these patterns from multiple cases - it gives us a much better picture than individual anecdotes.

Your tax preparer's insights are so helpful! I was wondering why some people seemed to get through verification faster than others. The credit factor might explain the variation.

Could you clarify if these timelines are business days or calendar days? And did any of your tax preparer's clients have to verify by mail rather than phone or online? I'm trying to understand all the variables.

I'm wondering if return complexity is also a factor in these processing times? For example, do self-employed returns with Schedule C take longer after verification than simple W-2 only returns?

After going through verification three years in a row (yes, really!), I can tell you that the April timeline is the worst-case scenario. The IRS tells everyone the maximum time to manage expectations. My personal experience: 2022 took 8 weeks (during COVID backlog), 2023 took 4 weeks, and this year took only 17 days from verification to deposit. The system is getting more efficient. Just make sure you've actually completed verification correctly - check your email for confirmation and log into your IRS account to confirm your identity status shows as verified.
