Identity Theft: Someone filed fraudulent return with $23k refund - How to report?

Just tried filing my taxes and got rejected because someone already filed using my info. Checked Where's My Refund and saw they're claiming a $23,264 refund! Never seen anything close to that amount on my returns. What do I do about this identity theft situation?

You need to file Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) immediately. Also file a police report and contact the FTC to report identity theft. File your correct paper return with the Form 14039 attached. The IRS will investigate and place a marker on your account for extra security. Keep all documentation and be prepared to wait several months for resolution.

Submit the 14039 asap! You can add the police report number later when you get it

I highly recommend using taxr.ai to analyze your transcript situation. For $1 it'll tell you exactly what's happening with the fraudulent return and what steps you need to take. It saved me weeks of confusion when I dealt with identity theft last year. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

Does it actually help with identity theft cases? How detailed is it?

Yes! It shows you exactly where the fraud indicators are on your transcript and gives you a step-by-step plan. Way better than trying to decode it yourself
