ITIN for daughter not processed by IRS - What to do?
I applied for an ITIN for my daughter but it wasn't processed. I want to know why. Has anyone else had this problem? What should I do next?

Ugh, dealing with ITIN applications can be such a headache! š¤ I had a similar issue last year. Did you receive any kind of notification or letter from the IRS about why it wasn't processed?

ā¢No, I haven't received anything yet. That's why I'm so confused and frustrated. How long did it take for you to hear back?

ā¢It took about 2 months for me to get a letter. They said I was missing some documents. Double check that you included everything they asked for in the application.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

ā¢I was skeptical at first too, but it really worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imho.

Here's what you need to know about ITIN applications: ⢠Make sure you're using the latest Form W-7 ⢠Include original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency ⢠If it's for a dependent, attach a valid federal tax return ⢠Double-check that all information is accurate and complete ⢠Consider using an Acceptance Agent to help with the process If your application was rejected, they should send you a letter explaining why. It can take up to 7 weeks for them to process it. If you haven't heard anything after 7 weeks, definitely follow up. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

ā¢Wow, thank you so much for this detailed information! I'll definitely go through this checklist. I think I might have messed up on the certified copies part. š¤¦āāļø

ā¢No problem! Yeah, the certified copies thing trips up a lot of people. Better to catch it now than wait for another rejection. Good luck!

Have you considered using a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA)? They can really streamline the process and help avoid common pitfalls.

ā¢I hadn't even heard of CAAs before. How do I find one? Are they expensive?

ā¢You can find a list on the IRS website. Costs vary, but usually around $50-$100. For me, it was worth it to avoid the headache.

ā¢Same boat here. It's like they're playing catch-up from the pandemic still. Hang in there!

Pro tip: if you're having trouble reaching the IRS, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help push things along.

Just went through this same nightmare last month! Here's what I learned: the IRS processing times are absolutely brutal right now - like 11-12 weeks instead of the usual 7. But here's the kicker - they don't always send rejection letters promptly either. I'd recommend calling the ITIN hotline (1-800-908-9982) and asking for a status update. Yeah, you'll be on hold forever, but at least you'll know if it's still processing or if there's an issue. Also, make sure you kept copies of EVERYTHING you sent - birth certificate, passport, whatever docs you used. If it does get rejected, the most common reasons are: wrong form version, missing supporting docs, or unclear photocopies. Don't give up though - once you know what went wrong, the resubmission usually goes smoother! šŖ
