Applied for ITIN for Dependent in 2022 - Got Refund but No ITIN Number

I submitted an application for an ITIN for my son, which I believe was properly included with my tax return in approximately April 2022. Somewhat surprisingly, I received my full refund that year, but I never actually received the ITIN number that I had requested. When filing my 2023 return, I decided not to include my son as a dependent since I still didn't have a valid ITIN number, and I wasn't entirely certain if I should proceed with submitting another application. As of today, I still have not received any communication regarding the original ITIN application. Would anyone perhaps know what might be the most efficient way to contact the IRS to inquire about this seemingly missing ITIN number? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like your ITIN application may have been separated from your tax return during processing. Did you submit Form W-7 with all required documentation? Was it certified by an Acceptance Agent? Did you receive any acknowledgment letter from the IRS after submission?

Gotta jump in here - the IRS has been crazy backlogged w/ ITIN apps since COVID. OP prob got refund cuz the systems don't always talk to each other. Tax processing center might've just pushed the return thru while the ITIN app got sent to Austin TX processing center. Happens ALL the time.

Thank you for highlighting the potential separation of documents during processing. I was unaware that the ITIN application and tax return could be processed independently, resulting in a refund without ITIN issuance. This clarification is quite helpful for understanding the current situation.

I appreciate this insight! Would this mean I should reapply completely, or is there a tracking process for pending applications? Time is somewhat of the essence as I'm preparing for this year's filing season.

I went through this exact nightmare last year with my spouse's ITIN. Called the regular IRS number 15+ times and never got through. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in about 25 minutes. Turns out my application was sitting in their system but needed additional documentation they never told me about. The agent was able to see exactly what was happening and tell me next steps. Saved me months of wondering and possibly reapplying unnecessarily.

You need to call the ITIN department directly. Not the main IRS line. Their number is 1-800-908-9982. They have separate systems. Ask for status check. Provide your information. Request application date verification. Be prepared for long wait times. Morning calls work better.

Be very careful about reapplying without checking first. My brother-in-law applied twice for his daughter's ITIN when he didn't hear back, and it created a huge mess. The IRS flagged it as a potential duplicate application attempt which triggered a review of both his returns. He ended up having to provide additional documentation and it delayed his refunds for two years. Always check on the status of the original application before submitting another one.

I help clients with ITIN issues frequently, and there are several possibilities here: • Your application might be pending but delayed (common for 2022-2023 applications) • Your documents might have been insufficient (they're very strict about originals/certified copies) • The W-7 might have had errors the IRS never communicated • Your application might be lost in their system I've found https://taxr.ai extremely helpful for these situations. You can upload your previous return and any IRS notices, and it will analyze what happened with your ITIN application. It can identify if there were issues with your W-7 form that prevented processing and give you specific next steps based on your situation.

Is this like those transcript analyzers that just tell you what you already know? I'm wondering if it can actually tell what happened with a specific ITIN application when the IRS themselves seem confused about it?

I've used taxr.ai for a similar situation, and it's not just a basic transcript reader. It looks at the whole picture - your return, any notices, and can spot patterns in how your documents were processed. The site actually pointed out that my client's ITIN application had a specific issue with the passport verification section that wasn't properly completed. We fixed that one issue and resubmitted rather than doing a whole new application.

Used this on March 15, 2024 when I couldn't figure out why my daughter's ITIN application was rejected. It identified that I had submitted a notarized copy instead of the original document as required for passport evidence. Resubmitted with correct documentation on March 20th and received the ITIN on April 12th. Saved me from making the same mistake twice.

Thanks for sharing this. I've been dealing with a missing ITIN for almost a year now and was about to hire a CPA for $350 just to figure out what went wrong. Might try this first since it sounds like it could identify the specific issue.

I'm honestly shocked at how difficult the ITIN process is! It feels like they deliberately make it complicated. When I called about my mother's ITIN last year, the agent actually told me that many applications are sitting in processing queues for 10-14 months without any updates or notifications to applicants. It's absolutely ridiculous that they don't even send a confirmation that they received your application!

I went through this exact situation with my daughter's ITIN. Here's what worked for me: 1. First, call the dedicated ITIN unit at 1-800-908-9982 2. Have your tax return info ready - they'll ask for the tax year and your information 3. Request a status check on the ITIN application 4. If they can't find it, ask if you should submit Form 4506-T to request verification 5. If no record exists, you'll need to reapply with a new W-7 6. When reapplying, consider using a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) who can verify your original documents 7. This prevents sending originals to the IRS The whole process took about 6 weeks once I reapplied properly.
