IRS sent verification letter to wrong address - 2024 return affected
I filed my 2024 taxes with my correct address but the IRS sent my verification letter somewhere else. The post office marked it as undeliverable. Now im worried about delays. Anyone deal with this before?

You need to submit Form 8822 (Change of Address) ASAP to ensure your correct address is on file. The IRS systems sometimes pull old addresses from previous years or other government databases. Call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to confirm they received your letter back as undeliverable - they should resend it to your correct address.

•Usually 7-10 business days after they confirm the undeliverable status

Hey I had this exact issue and ended up using taxr.ai to figure out what was going on. Its only $1 and the AI analyzed my transcript and showed me exactly what codes were causing the address mixup and what to do. Saved me hours of research https://taxr.ai

Pro tip: Always keep your address updated with USPS first, then file the 8822 with IRS. Makes everything sync better across systems

Check your transcript online if you can access it. Sometimes the letter contents are viewable there even if the physical copy went to wrong address

This is frustrating but definitely fixable! I went through something similar last year. Here's what worked for me: 1) Call the IRS immediately at 800-829-1040 and explain the situation - they can usually expedite a reissue to your correct address, 2) File Form 8822 online or by mail to update your address officially, 3) Keep documentation of everything (dates you called, reference numbers, etc). The whole process took about 2-3 weeks for me once I got everything sorted. Don't panic - this happens more often than you'd think!

•Thanks for the detailed steps! How long did it take after calling for them to actually resend the letter? I'm hoping I don't hit the same 3 month delay that @Tyler mentioned 😅
