IRS refund rejected by prepaid card, now waiting for paper check - avoid prepaid cards!

Filed my taxes at the end of March and was scheduled for direct deposit on 4/15 to my prepaid card. When nothing showed up by 4/20, I started checking my transcript and calling the card company. Finally found out yesterday that the prepaid card company DECLINED the incoming deposit from IRS! Now I'm stuck waiting for them to mail me a paper check which could take 4-6 weeks according to the rep I finally reached. Lesson learned - never using a prepaid card again! Thought it would be faster than waiting for a paper check but now I'm waiting even longer. Anyone else have this happen? Get yourself a real bank account folks!

This happens more than you'd think with prepaid cards. The issue is that some prepaid cards have deposit limits or verification requirements that can cause them to reject government payments. When the IRS sends a direct deposit that gets rejected, their system automatically converts it to a paper check, but that process takes time. You'll likely see a 971 code on your transcript soon indicating a notice being sent about the rejected direct deposit. For anyone reading this, direct deposit to traditional bank accounts is still the fastest way to get your refund. If you can't get a traditional account, look for prepaid cards specifically advertising they accept tax refunds without limits. Credit unions are also good alternatives with minimal fees and low minimum balances. You can check Where's My Refund on the IRS website for updates on the status of your check. Unfortunately once it switches to paper mail, there's not much you can do but wait.

Yeah I just saw the 971 code yesterday when I checked again. Frustrating that nobody warned me this could happen!

creadit unions are the way to go for sure. I switched from a big bank to a local CU and haven't looked back. No BS fees every month.

This is why the IRS system is so messed up. They should have better ways to handle this or at least tell people upfront that prepaid cards might reject their money!

If you wanna understand what's going on with your refund without spending hours decoding your transcript, I recommend checking out taxr.ai. It helped me figure out my own refund delay situation by actually explaining what all those weird IRS codes mean in plain english. It's insanely good! I use it every time I need to check my tax stuff now. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

Dude it's a game changer. It doesn't just read your transcript - it explains EVERYTHING. Like what each code means for YOU specifically, when you'll likely get paid, and what's actually happening behind the scenes. Saved me so much time and stress trying to google every little code and date. Everyone dealing with the IRS should be using this!

another tax help site? idk seems like they're all the same 🙄

0 coins

Not even close to the same. I've tried those other sites that just give generic info. This actually analyzes YOUR specific situation. Trust me, when you're pulling your hair out trying to figure out why your money is stuck, having something that can actually tell you what's happening is worth it.

I had a similar issue last year and was going crazy trying to reach someone at the IRS. I finally used Claimyr.com to get through to a live person at the IRS and they were able to explain what happened with my refund. The agent confirmed my paper check was already in the mail and told me exactly when to expect it. Best money I've spent dealing with tax headaches - talking to an actual human at the IRS was what I needed instead of staring at those cryptic transcripts. The callback came within an hour after I used the service.

wait does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to IRS for weeks now

0 coins

Yes 100% works. It basically navigates the IRS phone tree for you and holds your place in line. Then they call you when they have an agent. Saved me literal hours of being on hold.

another service promising miracles with the IRS? color me skeptical 🤨

0 coins

I can vouch for it too. Used it last month when my return was stuck in limbo. Got a callback in about 45 mins and the agent fixed my issue on the spot.

0 coins

I get the skepticism, believe me. I tried for TWO WEEKS to get through the normal way. With Claimyr I was talking to an agent the same day. For something as important as your tax refund, it was worth every penny to finally get answers.

Same thing happened to me! But with Chime. They returned my refund to the IRS saying it was "suspicious" even though I've used them for 2 years. Got my check about 3 weeks after the rejection. The most annoying part was Chime didn't even notify me - I had to call them after seeing nothing in my account.

Did you verify that the routing/account number was correct on your tax return? A lot of people make typos there and then the deposit gets rejected. Just want to rule that out before blaming the prepaid card.

0 coins

Yes, triple checked the numbers. The card company said they rejected it because it exceeded their daily deposit limit which they never told me about when I signed up 🤬

0 coins

Oof that's even worse then, that should be clearly disclosed! You might want to file a complaint with the CFPB about that.

Pro tip: Next time, split your refund with Form 8888. You can have it deposited into multiple accounts which helps avoid hitting deposit limits on prepaid cards. Also makes sure you don't lose everything if one account has issues.

That's actually really smart! I'll definitely do that next year, assuming I even get this year's refund sometime this century lol

0 coins

This is the way. I split mine between checking, savings, and I-bonds every year.

The IRS is such a joke. Last year they sent my check to the wrong address even though I had direct deposit set up. Then they made me verify my identity. Then they said I had to file an amended return. The whole system is designed to make us suffer.

Preach! I've been waiting 11 months for my 2022 refund. ELEVEN. MONTHS.

0 coins

sadly this is by design. they don't have enough funding to properly staff the agency, so everything takes forever. it's easier for politicians to cut IRS budget than fix the actual problems.

While your waiting for the check to arrive, check your transcript once a week. You'll see a code 846 with a date when the check is actually issued. That date is usually pretty accurate for when it will arrive in your mailbox.

Call your local congressman's office! Their constituent services can sometimes help speed things up with the IRS. I was waiting 8+ weeks for a paper check and after calling my rep it suddenly appeared 10 days later.

This ⬆️ Congressional inquiries light a fire under them like nothing else

0 coins

not to be that person but... isn't this why people tell you not to use prepaid cards for important stuff? they always have weird limitations and fees. hope you get your $$ soon tho

0 coins

Yeah you're right. I just didn't have a regular bank account at the time I filed. Definitely opening one this week though!

If you haven't allready, go to usps.com and sign up for informed delivery. It's free and you'll see pictures of all mail coming to your address. That way you'll know exactly when your check is arriving 👍

This is a great tip that not enough people know about! I use informed delivery and it's sooo helpful

Just signed up, thanks for this!

What prepaid card was it? Need to know which ones to avoid

0 coins

It was a GreenDot card. They have a $5,000 deposit limit which they never mentioned when I signed up. My refund was $5,782 so it got rejected.

0 coins

Netspend did the same thing to my brother last year. These prepaid cards have so many hidden gotchas.

0 coins

I was tired of all the prepaid card drama too. Went to taxr.ai to understand why my refund kept getting delayed, and the analysis actually pointed out that my prepaid card was likely the issue before the card company even told me. Been using their service to watch my transcript ever since and it's been super helpful tracking everything. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

How does this compare to just checking the where's my refund tool?

0 coins

Where's My Refund is like getting a yes/no answer. taxr.ai actually explains everything happening in your account - all the codes, dates, what they mean, what's causing delays, etc. It's like having an accountant read your transcript for you.

The exact same thing happened to me in 2022. I used Claimyr.com and got through to a human at the IRS after trying for weeks on my own. The agent told me that once a direct deposit is rejected, there's absolutely nothing they can do to re-send it electronically - it HAS to go by paper check. But at least they confirmed where they were sending it and gave me a timeframe. Talking to an actual person at the IRS got my mind at ease. Anyone stuck in tax limbo should definitely consider using the service to skip the hold times.

0 coins

did u have to provide a bunch of personal info to use that service? sounds sketchy

0 coins

They don't take any personal info. They just navigate the phone system and then connect you with the IRS. You talk directly to the IRS, not to a third party.

0 coins

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the prepaid card! The IRS system is so frustrating. Have you tried calling the IRS directly? I had a similar situation last year and was able to get some help by using Claimyr.com to actually get through to a live person at the IRS. It's worth trying since they might be able to give you more specific information about when to expect your check. Talking to an agent on the phone was the only thing that got my refund situation resolved.

0 coins

This is exactly why I always tell people to avoid prepaid cards for tax refunds! I work as a tax preparer and see this happen every year. The problem is that prepaid card companies often have undisclosed deposit limits, fraud detection systems that flag large government deposits, or they simply don't want to deal with the liability of holding large amounts. Your GreenDot situation with the $5,000 limit is unfortunately very common - they should absolutely disclose that upfront. The good news is that once the IRS processes the rejection and issues a paper check, it's usually pretty reliable. Keep checking your transcript for the 846 code that others mentioned, and definitely sign up for USPS Informed Delivery so you'll know when it's coming. For next year, even a basic checking account at a credit union will save you all this hassle. Most credit unions have very low or no minimum balance requirements and won't play games with your refund deposits like these prepaid cards do.
