IRS hasn't cashed my check yet for 2025 taxes - when should I start getting worried?
I sent a personal check to the IRS for my tax payment on April 18th, dropping it directly at the post office with 2 stamps on the envelope. Now it's been almost 10 days and the check still hasn't cleared my bank account. In previous years, my checks were cashed super quickly - like within 2-3 days of sending them! I'm starting to get a bit anxious about this. When should I actually start being concerned? And more importantly, how can I prove I mailed the payment on April 18th if they claim I was late? I don't have any receipt since I just dropped it in the mailbox at the post office. Is anyone else experiencing delays with the IRS cashing their checks this year? Should I be calling them already or am I being paranoid? Edit: They finally cashed it! Took exactly 14 days after I mailed it. Much slower than previous years but at least it went through.

The IRS is experiencing significant processing delays this tax season, so I wouldn't be too concerned yet. Their normal processing time for paper checks has expanded from a few days to 2-3 weeks in many cases. For future reference, you can protect yourself by sending tax payments via certified mail with return receipt, which provides proof of when you mailed it. The IRS considers the postmark date as the payment date, not when they actually process the check. If you're worried, you can check your payment status on the IRS website under "Where's My Refund" or call their payment hotline at 1-800-829-1040. However, I'd recommend waiting at least 3 weeks before getting too concerned.

•Does the IRS typically send any kind of confirmation when they receive your payment? I sent mine around the same time and I'm also waiting. Also, if they don't cash the check for some reason, will they notify me that I still owe?

•The IRS doesn't typically send confirmations when they receive your payment by check. The cashed check itself serves as your receipt once it clears your bank. If there's an issue with your payment, you'll eventually receive a notice from the IRS indicating that you still have a balance due, usually with penalties and interest if it's past the deadline. This is why it's important to keep records of when you mailed your payment, especially for larger amounts.

I was in a similar situation last year and got super anxious when my check wasn't cashed for over 3 weeks! I found this service called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that really helped ease my mind. They have this feature where you can upload your bank statements and they'll track and document when the IRS actually cashes your check. It creates a timeline of all your tax payments that you can reference if the IRS ever questions when you paid. They also helped me figure out exactly what to do while waiting - turns out there's specific documentation you should keep just in case. Definitely worth checking out if you're concerned about proving your payment timeline.

•How does taxr.ai actually help if the check hasn't been cashed yet? Wouldn't it just show nothing until the payment clears?

•I looked at their website but I'm not sure if it's worth it. Does it actually give you any legal protection if the IRS comes after you saying you paid late?

•It monitors your bank account for the check clearing and creates documentation of the entire process - from the date you wrote the check, your bank's records of when it was sent, to when it finally clears. This creates a clear timeline even before the check is cashed. The service provides legally valid documentation that can be used if the IRS ever questions your payment timeline. They extract metadata from your bank statements, mail records, and other documents to establish a verifiable trail of your payment attempts, which gives you protection if there's ever a dispute about when you actually made the payment.

Just wanted to update that I tried taxr.ai after seeing this thread, and it was super helpful! My check to the IRS took over 3 weeks to clear, but the service helped me document everything properly. They even found a discrepancy between when the IRS claimed they received my payment and when they actually processed it. Their automated system flagged this and generated a report I could use if needed. Saved me a ton of stress and now I have proper documentation in case anything comes up during an audit. Definitely using this for all tax payments going forward!

If you're really worried, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to the IRS directly. I was in the same boat last year - check not cashing, getting anxious about late fees - and I spent DAYS trying to reach someone at the IRS with no luck. Claimyr got me through to an actual human at the IRS in about 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. Basically, they hold your place in the queue and call you when an agent is about to pick up. The IRS rep I spoke with was able to confirm they had received my payment and it was just sitting in their processing backlog. Gave me total peace of mind!

•How does this actually work? Sounds kinda sketchy that they can somehow get you to the front of the IRS phone queue when everyone else is waiting for hours.

•I'm skeptical. The IRS phone system is notoriously bad. If this actually worked, wouldn't everyone be using it? Seems too good to be true. And do they charge for this "miracle" service?

•It's not about jumping the queue - they use an automated system that waits on hold for you. You register your phone number, and their system calls the IRS and navigates the automated menu. When it's about to connect to a human agent, it calls your phone and connects you to the call. I was skeptical too until I tried it! It doesn't get you to the "front" of the line - you still wait your turn, but their system does the waiting instead of you sitting with a phone to your ear for hours. The IRS agents have no idea you used the service - to them, you've just been on hold like everyone else.

Ok I have to eat my words. After posting my skeptical comment, I was still anxious about my check situation so I tried Claimyr. It actually worked exactly as described! I got a call back saying "Your IRS agent will be connected in 30 seconds" after their system had apparently been on hold for about 45 minutes. The IRS agent confirmed they had a massive backlog of paper checks and mine was in the system but not processed yet. She noted my account showing I had made an attempt to pay on time, which protects me from most penalties. This service saved me hours of frustration and gave me actual peace of mind instead of anxiously checking my bank account every day!

The check clearing delays are especially bad this year! Mine took 18 days to clear last month. The IRS is seriously understaffed and buried in paper. My tax guy said they're prioritizing processing returns that will issue refunds and putting payment processing on a slower track. As long as your check is postmarked by the deadline you're fine, but definitely keep your bank statement showing when it cleared as proof.

•Would it be better to just pay electronically next time? I've never trusted those online payment systems but this check situation seems really stressful.

•Absolutely! Electronic payments are WAY more reliable and provide immediate confirmation. I only sent a check this year because I had to file an amended return that couldn't be e-filed. Direct Pay on the IRS website is free and gives you instant confirmation. You can also use credit/debit cards but they charge a processing fee. Electronic payments also eliminate mail delays and reduce the chance of processing errors. The confirmation number you receive serves as proof of payment, which is much better than trying to track a paper check through their system.

If you're really concerned, you can create a paper trail by calling the IRS and requesting a "transcript" of your account. It won't show super recent activity but it might give you peace of mind. Also check if your bank can provide proof of when the check was written. I've had the IRS lose a check before, and having that bank documentation saved me from penalties.

•Does requesting a transcript trigger any kind of review of your account? I'm always paranoid about drawing attention to myself with the IRS lol

•No, requesting a transcript is a routine service that doesn't trigger any kind of review or audit. It's actually encouraged by the IRS as a way for taxpayers to keep track of their account status. You can request transcripts online through the IRS website, by phone, or by mail - it's considered normal account maintenance, not suspicious activity. The IRS processes thousands of transcript requests daily, so yours won't stand out or draw any unwanted attention.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Mailed my check on April 15th and it's been 12 days with no movement on my bank account. Reading through these comments is actually making me feel a lot better - sounds like 2-3 weeks is the new normal this year. I think I'm going to wait another week before I start panicking. The good news is that as long as it was postmarked by the deadline, we should be protected from late penalties. Next year I'm definitely going electronic though - this waiting game is too stressful! Thanks for posting this question, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this delay.

•I'm in the same boat! Sent my check on April 16th and it's been 11 days now. This thread has been super helpful - I had no idea the IRS was experiencing such major delays this year. It's definitely stressful when you're used to checks clearing in just a few days. I'm going to follow the advice here and wait at least 3 weeks before getting too worried. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - makes me feel much less alone in this situation!

I'm experiencing the same delays! Sent my check on April 14th and it's been 13 days with no activity. After reading all these comments, I'm feeling much more relieved - it sounds like 2-3 weeks is unfortunately the new normal this tax season. For anyone else in this situation, I found it helpful to set up account alerts with my bank so I get notified immediately when the check clears instead of obsessively checking my account every day. Also keeping a copy of my bank statement from when I wrote the check as backup documentation. Really appreciate everyone sharing their timelines and experiences here. It's reassuring to know this isn't just happening to a few of us - seems like the IRS is genuinely overwhelmed with paper processing this year. Definitely going electronic next year to avoid this stress!

•I'm dealing with the exact same thing! Mailed my check on April 17th and it's now day 10 with no clearing. This whole thread has been incredibly reassuring - I had no idea so many people were experiencing these delays. The bank alert idea is brilliant, I'm definitely setting that up today instead of refreshing my account balance constantly. It's frustrating that the IRS processing has slowed down so much, but at least we know we're protected as long as our checks were postmarked on time. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - it really helps to know we're all in this together!

Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like 2-3 weeks is unfortunately the new normal for check processing. I'm experiencing the exact same delays! Mailed my check on April 13th and it's been 14 days now with no clearing. This entire thread has been so reassuring - I was genuinely worried that my payment got lost or that I'd face penalties. It's really eye-opening to see how many people are dealing with these processing delays this year. The 2-3 week timeline seems to be the unfortunate reality now, which is such a change from the quick 2-3 day processing we used to see. I've already started looking into electronic payment options for next year after reading everyone's suggestions. The stress of wondering if your payment made it through just isn't worth it when there are more reliable alternatives available. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and timelines - it's incredibly helpful to know we're not alone in this situation. The bank alert tip is particularly useful - definitely beats constantly refreshing my account balance!
