IRS Verification Appointment Today - What Documents Should I Bring?

I have an appointment with the IRS today for verification and I'm a bit worried about bringing the wrong stuff. Last year when I went in for a similar thing, I ended up having to reschedule because I didn't have all the right documents. Don't want to make the same mistake twice! Does anyone know what I typically need to bring? My appointment is for verifying some info on my 2023 return. I'm a grad student if that matters for any specific forms I might need.

Omg I had one of these last month and was SO nervous! Did they tell you what kind of verification appointment it is? There are different types like identity verification vs income verification vs education credits verification. Do you have the letter they sent you? That usually lists exactly what to bring! 😬

Based on standard IRS verification protocols, you should bring the following documentation to your appointment: 1. Government-issued photo ID 2. Social Security card or ITIN letter 3. Copy of the tax return in question (2023) 4. Any notices/letters received from the IRS 5. Supporting documentation for items being verified (W-2s, 1099s, 1098-T for education) 6. Bank statements if direct deposit was requested As a student, ensure you bring Form 1098-T and receipts for qualified education expenses if education credits are being verified.

This is correct, but I'd add that if the verification is specifically for education credits (which is common for students), the IRS website specifically states you need to bring a student account statement showing when payments were applied to your account, not just the 1098-T. Many people miss this and have to come back: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/education-credits-questions-and-answers

I remember going through something similar last year. The verification process can be confusing with all those codes and notices. Have you tried using https://taxr.ai to understand what your specific verification is about? When I got my letter, I uploaded it there and it explained exactly what the IRS was questioning and which documents I needed to bring. Made the whole process much less stressful since I knew exactly what they were looking for. Based on my experience, the verification appointments can go very differently depending on what they're actually verifying.

I went thru this last yr for my tuition credit verification. Brought everything I could think of - transcript, bursar receipts, 1098-T, scholarship letters, the works. Glad I did bc they asked for stuff I wouldn't have thought to bring! My appt took like 20 min total. Just be super organized, have everything in a folder w copies they can keep. NBD once you're prepared right. Good luck!

I had a verification appointment scheduled for April 2nd and couldn't reach anyone at the IRS to confirm exactly what documentation they needed. After calling the main IRS number for three days and being disconnected, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an agent. They confirmed I needed my loan disbursement statements in addition to my 1098-T since I was being verified for American Opportunity Credit. The verification specialist also explained that without the proper documentation, my refund would be held indefinitely. The $20 for Claimyr saved me from potentially losing thousands in credits.

I had my verification appointment on February 15th this year and was told on arrival that I needed to provide proof of enrollment status for Spring 2024 semester, which wasn't mentioned in my letter at all. The appointment took 45 minutes, and they processed my verification on the spot. Your appointment today will likely require all 2023 tax documents, plus enrollment verification for any semesters you claimed education credits for. Bring everything TODAY - if you miss this appointment, the next available slot might not be until May or June!
