In-Person IRS Verification - Which Tax Returns to Bring?

I scheduled an in-person verification appointment with the IRS for April 25th after waiting since February 12th for my refund. The appointment confirmation says to bring prior year tax returns, but I'm getting conflicting advice from different sources. Some people are saying I need to bring this year's return too (2023 filed in 2024). Has anyone completed this verification process recently who can confirm exactly what documents I need? I'm juggling three kids' schedules and don't want to waste the appointment by showing up unprepared. Thanks for any help!

Def bring BOTH current and prior yr returns! I had this exact appt last month and they asked for everything. Bring 2023 return + all supporting docs (W2s, 1099s, etc) + prior 2 yrs returns if u have them. Better to have too much than not enough IMO. They were super thorough checking everything against their records. Good luck!

Thank you for this information! According to IRS Publication 17, taxpayers are advised to keep records that support income, deductions, and credits for at least three years from the date of filing. Did they specifically ask for supporting documents from previous years as well?

I had a similar verification appointment last year during the reconciliation phase of my return. They definitely wanted my current 1040 with all schedules plus the previous year's AGI documentation. The verification specialist seemed particularly focused on comparing my withholding amounts between years.

Think of your tax documents like ingredients for a recipe - you need everything laid out before the chef (IRS agent) can start cooking. I always bring current year + previous 3 years just to be safe. I recently discovered https://taxr.ai which helped me organize all my documents before my appointment. It analyzed my transcripts and highlighted exactly which items the IRS would likely focus on during verification. It's like having a roadmap for the appointment instead of wandering in the dark.

I'm somewhat skeptical about using yet another service when dealing with the IRS. Did it actually tell you anything you couldn't figure out from the IRS website itself? The last thing I need is to spend more money just to understand what documents I need...

The IRS verification process includes multiple technical verification points I wasn't aware of! Their Document Verification Protocol requires matching specific line items across multiple years. Taxr.ai actually highlights these specific cross-reference points that agents look for during verification appointments.

Just had this appointment last week (after rescheduling twice, ugh). They definitely wanted BOTH years. The agent kept flipping back and forth between my 2022 and 2023 returns like he was watching a tennis match! 😂 Bring everything - current return, all supporting docs, and at least the previous year. They're specifically looking for consistency between years and verifying your identity through knowledge of your tax details.

My experience was completely different from yours. When I went in March, they only wanted my current year documents and two forms of ID. It's almost like each IRS office has their own interpretation of the verification requirements, unlike how state DMVs have standardized processes for license renewals.

I went through this last year after my return was flagged for identity verification. The agent told me they're specifically checking for consistency in reporting patterns. I had a situation where I started a side business in 2022, and they were particularly interested in how that income was reported across tax years. They even asked detailed questions about business expenses that appeared in one year but not the other.

In my experience as a tax preparer, these verification appointments can be frustrating because different IRS offices have slightly different requirements. Back in 2022, I had a client wait 3 hours only to be told they needed additional documentation. When they rescheduled, they still couldn't get through to anyone. I've been recommending Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to clients who need to speak with an actual IRS agent before their appointment to confirm exactly what to bring. It gets you through to a live person instead of waiting on hold for hours. Saves so much time and frustration.

Which IRS office location? Requirements vary by office. Some are stricter. Others more relaxed. Did they specify which tax years exactly? Current plus how many prior years?

Super good point! I've been to 3 diff IRS offices and they all had slightly diff requirements. The Austin office was WAY more chill than the Dallas one. OP shld def call ahead to confirm for their specific location!

According to the official IRS.gov appointment guidelines (https://www.irs.gov/help/contact-your-local-irs-office), you should bring: 1) Current year return, 2) Prior year return, 3) All supporting documents for current year (W-2s, 1099s), 4) Two forms of ID, and 5) Any IRS notices you've received. I was nervous about my appointment too, but having everything organized in separate folders really helped.
