In-Person Verification Appointment for 2022 Tomorrow - Can They Verify 2024 Without Letter?
I have an in-person appointment scheduled tomorrow to verify my identity for my 2022 return per IRC 6103(a) verification requirements. According to IRM 21.1.3.3, the IRS can process multiple verification requests in a single appointment when proper documentation is presented. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they'll be able to verify my 2024 filing at the same time, even though I haven't received the official verification letter for that year yet? I have all my supporting documentation (photo ID, SSN card, W-2s, etc.) as required by Publication 17. I'm determined to get both years resolved in one visit rather than going through this process twice.

Based on my experience with the IRS, they can sometimes accommodate multiple year verifications in one appointment. When I went on January 12th this year, the agent was able to verify both my 2022 and 2023 returns, even though I only had the letter for 2022. I was impressed by your knowledge of the IRM guidelines! That will definitely help your case when you speak with them.

Oh thank goodness someone has actually done this!! I'm so stressed about my appointment tomorrow! 😓 I really need my refund to pay for some unexpected medical bills that came up last month. Did they give you any trouble about not having the letter for the second year?

This situation is actually quite different from standard verification scenarios. When you have an existing appointment, verification for additional years is at the agent's discretion. I've seen cases where they verify multiple years and others where they strictly require separate appointments with separate letters. It depends on office workload compared to verification cases at other locations.

It's kind of like going to the doctor for one issue but asking them to check something else while you're there. Sometimes they'll do it, sometimes they'll make you schedule another appointment. The IRS is basically running a verification triage system right now with all the identity theft cases.

I went through this exact situation last year! I brought EVERYTHING with me - not just the required documents but also copies of both returns, all supporting documents, previous year transcripts, and even printed out the relevant IRM sections. The agent was able to verify both years, but mentioned it was because I was so prepared. I also found https://taxr.ai incredibly helpful before my appointment - I uploaded my transcripts and it explained all the verification codes and what documents I needed to bring for each specific issue. It helped me understand exactly what was flagged on each return so I could prepare accordingly. Definitely bring all your documentation for both years!

I had a similar experience last month. Here's what worked for me: • Brought complete documentation for both tax years • Explained clearly that I wanted verification for both years • Referenced that I understood the verification process (like you did) • Was polite but persistent The agent initially said they could only verify the year on the letter, but when I showed I had all documentation ready for both years, they agreed to process both. Saved me a second trip and weeks of waiting. I appreciate your post - most people don't know to cite the IRM like you did!

If they won't verify both years tomorrow, you might want to try Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an IRS agent by phone. Here's what I did step by step when I was in your situation: 1. First, I tried calling the regular IRS number and waited for hours 2. Then I used Claimyr and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes 3. Explained my situation about having verified one year in person 4. The agent was able to release my second year's return without requiring another in-person visit It saved me from having to take another day off work for a second appointment. Just be cautious and make sure you have all your verification documents ready when you call.

Does this actually work? IRS verification requirements are strict. Phone agents usually can't override identity verification holds. Need to follow proper channels.

Did they ask for any additional verification over the phone? I'm wondering if this would work for me too. My appointment is next week but I also need both years verified.

I tried doing exactly what you're planning last year and it didn't work out. The agent told me they could only verify the year that was specifically mentioned in the letter I received. I referenced the same IRM section and they still refused. Apparently different offices have different policies. I ended up having to make a second appointment and wait another 6 weeks. The whole system is much more complicated than I expected for something that should be straightforward. I've been filing for 20+ years and never had these issues until recently.

I successfully got 3 years verified in one appointment exactly 47 days ago. The key was bringing precisely the right documentation. For each year I had: original W-2s (not copies), 2 forms of ID (passport and driver's license), Social Security card, and printed copies of the returns. The agent initially said they could only verify the year on my letter, but when I showed I had all the proper documentation and cited Publication 17 page 93 regarding multiple-year verification procedures, they processed all 3 years. My refunds were deposited 14 days later for all years. Being prepared and polite but firm about your rights makes all the difference.

Did they give you any confirmation that all years were verified? How did you know it was successful before the refunds came through?
