IRS Status: What's the difference between 'Being Processed' vs 'Still Being Processed'?
When I check 'Where's My Refund' it used to say 'Your Return is Being Processed' but now it says 'Your Return is Still Being Processed.' Does this mean something different? Is this good or bad? Its been 8 weeks since I filed.

Yes, there's actually a big difference. 'Being Processed' means your return is moving through the normal processing stages. 'Still Being Processed' usually indicates there's some kind of review or hold up. Could be identity verification, income verification, or they need to check something specific on your return.

•oh great 🤦♀️ any idea how long these reviews usually take?

•It varies wildly tbh. Could be a few more weeks or several months depending on what they're reviewing.

I've been using taxr.ai to track my transcript and it's been super helpful understanding exactly what's happening. It costs $4.99 but its worth every penny - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on and when to expect your refund. Way better than playing detective with WMR https://taxr.ai

•100% works. It showed me I had a 420 code that needed attention and exactly what to do about it. Got my refund 2 weeks after following its advice!

After 8 weeks you're definitely in the extended processing timeframe. The language change from "Being Processed" to "Still Being Processed" usually means they've hit some kind of review trigger - could be anything from income verification to just being in a backlogged queue. I'd recommend checking your transcript on the IRS website to see if there are any notices or codes that might give you more insight into what's causing the delay. Hang in there!

Same thing happened to me last year - the wording change from "Being Processed" to "Still Being Processed" at 8 weeks usually means they're doing some kind of manual review. Mine took another 4 weeks after that status change but I eventually got my refund plus interest. The waiting is brutal but try not to stress too much about the language change itself - it's more about timeline than anything being wrong with your return.

•That's really helpful to know! The fact that you got interest makes me feel a bit better about the delay. Did you do anything specific during those 4 weeks or just wait it out? I'm trying to decide if I should call or just be patient 😅

I went through the exact same thing last year! The switch from "Being Processed" to "Still Being Processed" at around 8 weeks usually means they're doing a manual review of something on your return. In my case, it was because I had some 1099 income that didn't perfectly match what they had on file. The good news is that once they moved me to "Still Being Processed" status, I got my refund about 3 weeks later with interest for the delay. Try not to panic - the language change is more about letting you know it's taking longer than normal rather than indicating a problem. You can also check your transcript online to see if there are any specific codes that might give you more details about what's being reviewed.

•This is super reassuring! I'm dealing with some 1099 work too so that might be exactly what's happening with mine. Did you have to do anything during those 3 weeks or did it just resolve on its own? Also really good to know about the interest - I had no idea they paid that for delays!

The timing and language change you're describing is pretty typical for returns that need manual review. At 8 weeks with the status switching to "Still Being Processed," you're likely in what the IRS calls their "extended processing" queue. This could be triggered by various factors - income verification, credits that need additional review, or even just being randomly selected for closer examination. While it's frustrating, the good news is that most people in your situation do eventually get their refunds, often with interest for the delay. I'd suggest checking your IRS transcript online if you haven't already - it might show specific codes that could give you more insight into what's being reviewed. If you make it to 12 weeks, that's when you can contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service for additional help.

•Thanks for breaking this down so clearly! I didn't know about the 12-week threshold for the Taxpayer Advocate Service - that's really good to know. I'm going to check my transcript tonight to see if there are any specific codes showing up. Hopefully I won't need to wait another 4 weeks but at least now I have a better understanding of what's happening and when I should escalate if needed. Really appreciate the detailed explanation! 🙏

Been through this exact situation! The switch from "Being Processed" to "Still Being Processed" at 8 weeks typically means your return has moved into manual review. This could be for identity verification, income matching, or just being in a backlogged queue. The good news is that most people get their refunds within 2-4 weeks after this status change, plus interest for the delay. I'd recommend pulling your IRS transcript online to see if there are any specific codes that might explain what's being reviewed. Try not to stress too much - it's more about timing than anything being wrong with your return!

•This is really reassuring to hear from someone who's been through it! I'm definitely going to check my transcript tonight - I keep hearing about these codes but haven't looked into it yet. The fact that most people get their refund within 2-4 weeks after the status change gives me hope. And honestly, getting interest for the delay would be nice compensation for all this stress! Thanks for sharing your experience 😊

I'm in the exact same situation - filed in early December and just hit the 8 week mark with the status change from "Being Processed" to "Still Being Processed" last week. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really helpful! It sounds like this is pretty normal and most people are getting their refunds within a few weeks of the status change. I'm going to check my transcript tonight to see if there are any specific codes showing up. Thanks for asking this question - I was starting to panic but now I feel much better knowing this is a common experience and not necessarily a red flag! 🤞

•Same here! Filed around the same time and just got the status change last week too. It's so reassuring to see that we're not alone in this and that it seems to be part of the normal (albeit slow) process. I was definitely starting to worry that something was wrong with my return, but reading everyone's experiences makes me feel much better. Going to check my transcript tonight as well - seems like that's the key to understanding what's actually happening behind the scenes. Fingers crossed we both get good news soon! 🤞

I went through this exact same thing last year! The status change from "Being Processed" to "Still Being Processed" at 8 weeks usually indicates your return has moved into a manual review queue. This could be for income verification, identity verification, or just routine quality control checks. In my case, it took about 3 more weeks after the status change, but I did get my refund plus interest for the delay. The key thing is that "Still Being Processed" doesn't mean there's necessarily anything wrong - it's just their way of acknowledging it's taking longer than the standard timeframe. I'd definitely recommend checking your IRS transcript online to see if there are any specific codes that might give you insight into what's being reviewed. Hang in there - most people in your situation do get their refunds eventually!
