IRS Says No Errors But I'm in 'Error Department' - 10 Week Wait Started Feb 2nd
So I filed my taxes on February 2nd and got accepted the same day. Fast forward to today, and I finally got through to someone at the IRS who told me there are "no errors" on my return but somehow I'm still in the "error department" 🙃 They also said my 10-week review period started on Feb 2nd. Like, thanks for the clarity folks! I'm basically Schrödinger's tax return - simultaneously error-free and in error processing. Anyone else dealing with this weird limbo? I do gig work (Uber/DoorDash) so I'm used to waiting on money, but this is getting ridiculous. Any advice would be super appreciated!

This is actually pretty common right now. What's happening is likely one of several things: • You're in error *resolution* department, not necessarily because of an error you made • The system flagged something for manual review (common with gig workers) • They're verifying income against what was reported by platforms • The 10-week timeframe is their standard for these reviews The good news is that if they told you there are no errors, it likely means they're just going through verification steps. Many returns get routed there as a precaution, especially with self-employment income. Stay patient, you're on the right track!

•This is like being told your flight is both on time and delayed. The IRS error department is like a black hole - things go in and you have no idea when they'll come out. Last year I was in the same situation and it took exactly 9 weeks and 3 days before my return suddenly processed. It's like waiting for water to boil - it never happens when you're watching.

•I appreciate this breakdown. According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6, the Error Resolution System (ERS) handles returns with potential discrepancies, but also processes returns that simply need manual verification. This distinction is rarely communicated to taxpayers, leading to unnecessary concern.

•I'm confused though - if there are no errors, why does it take 10 weeks? Do they actually look at each return individually or is it just sitting in a digital queue somewhere? I'm feeling so anxious about mine now!

•TurboTax forums are filled with people in this exact situation. I've been checking r/IRS daily and it seems like gig workers are getting extra scrutiny this year. I'm on week 8 of my wait after being told the same thing.

I experienced an identical situation with my Schedule C income verification last year. I utilized Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) after 6 weeks of unsuccessful attempts to reach an IRS representative through conventional channels. The Taxpayer Advocate Service representative I connected with confirmed my return was in the Error Resolution System (ERS) despite having no actual errors - merely awaiting manual verification of my 1099-K amounts. Claimyr expedited the connection process significantly, allowing me to confirm my status without the perpetual busy signals. The representative provided my actual expected completion date, which was accurate within 3 days.

•Does this service actually work? I've tried calling the IRS directly at least 15 times in the past month and can never get through. Always hung up on after waiting forever.

I was in exactly the same position on February 8th, 2024. Filed and accepted that day, then stuck in processing for exactly 63 days. Called on day 42 and was told I was in the error department despite having "no errors." My refund of $3,742 was finally deposited on April 11th, 2024 - exactly 9 weeks after filing. The IRS agent I spoke with confirmed they're reviewing 100% of returns with gig work income above $5,000 this year. I'm grateful for everyone sharing their timelines here - it helped me stay patient knowing others were experiencing the same delays.

•Same experience here. Got stuck in review for about 2 months. No explanation given. Then suddenly one day everything processed. No changes to my return at all.

•I think I might be in this situation too... I filed on February 15th and still nothing. Do you know if there's anything we can do to speed it up? I'm getting really worried.

•Wait, they're reviewing ALL gig worker returns? Is this a new policy for 2024? I've been filing with Uber income for years and never had this happen before.

Last year I was stuck in this same situation. I remember checking my transcript every day and seeing all these codes I didn't understand. I finally used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it explained that code 570 followed by 971 meant my return was under review but not necessarily because I made an error. It predicted my refund date within 2 days of when I actually received it. Might be worth checking your transcript if you haven't already - the tool really helped me understand what was happening behind the scenes.

Be very careful about believing what one IRS agent tells you. I had a similar situation in 2022 where one agent said there were no errors, then another said I was missing a form, and a third said I needed to verify my identity. Each time the 10-week clock seemed to restart. My sister-in-law had her return stuck for 16 weeks despite being told "10 weeks" initially. The error department processes are much slower than regular returns, which typically process in 21 days. Your situation sounds like the standard gig worker review, but I'd recommend calling again in 2 weeks if nothing changes.

Same boat here. Filed February 5th. Got accepted immediately. Called last week. They said error department. No actual errors though. Just "verification" needed. Still waiting. Week 8 now. No transcript updates. WMR still shows processing. Hoping for movement soon. Hang in there.

I filed on January 29th, 2024 and was stuck in the error department until April 4th, 2024 - exactly 9 weeks and 2 days. Called on March 15th and was told to wait the full 10 weeks. Called again on April 1st and was told it was being worked on. Received my deposit on April 8th. If you don't see movement by April 13th (which will be your 10 weeks), call immediately on April 15th to request they expedite. The fiscal quarter just ended and they're clearing backlogs now!

•When you say they're clearing backlogs now, is that because it's the end of the quarter? Does the IRS work on some kind of quarterly system for processing returns?

•I had a similar timeline last year. Filed early February, stuck until mid-April, then suddenly processed in 3 days. No explanation.

•Thanks for sharing your timeline! It helps to see real examples with actual dates. Gives me hope mine will resolve soon too.

Based on what I've seen in this community over the past few years, this "no errors but in error department" situation happens to thousands of gig workers each filing season. It's essentially a random selection for additional verification. I've tracked patterns in the community and noticed most people receive their refunds between weeks 8-10, with a small percentage going longer. The best approach is to: 1) Check your transcript weekly, not daily, 2) Call only after your 10 weeks are up, and 3) Remember that nearly everyone eventually gets their refund with no changes. The IRS is just overwhelmed and understaffed.
