IRS Delay Due to Deceased Spouse - SSA Verification Taking Forever?

Filed late January and got approved same day but stuck in processing. IRS says they need to verify my late spouse's passing with Social Security Administration. Rep mentioned possible 16 week wait. Anyone dealt with this? Is the 16 week timeline accurate?

Unfortunately, this is a common verification process when filing with a deceased spouse. The 16-week timeline is a maximum estimate - I've seen these resolved anywhere from 6-12 weeks typically. The IRS has to wait for SSA to confirm death records, which isn't automated. Keep checking your transcript weekly for updates.

Thanks for the info! Really hoping it doesnt take the full 16 weeks 😩

Hey, tax specialist here. Instead of checking WMR constantly and stressing, I'd recommend using taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's causing delays and estimated timeframes. Its only $1 and WAY more accurate than guessing. https://taxr.ai

My brother went thru this last year. Took exactly 13 weeks but he got it all sorted. The wait time depends on how backed up SSA is tbh
