IRS Amended Return Delay: Months of Waiting, No Updates - How Long Does It Take?
Has anyone else been waiting forever for their amended return update? I filed months ago and still haven't heard anything. I've tried calling the IRS multiple times but can never get through to a real person. It's so frustrating! Does anyone know how long this process usually takes or if there's a better way to get an update?

I feel ya, OP. I've been waiting on my amended return for so long, I'm pretty sure my unborn grandchildren will be collecting social security by the time it's processed. 👴👵

Have you tried contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service? They can sometimes help if you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay.

I hadn't thought of that. How do I get in touch with them?

You can find your local office on the IRS website. Just google "Taxpayer Advocate Service" and your state.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service has been really helpful for some people. They can sometimes expedite things.

Seriously tho, the IRS needs more funding. They're working with outdated systems and not enough staff. No wonder everything's so slow.

Agreed. The IRS needs better resources to handle this workload.

Lol welcome to the wonderful world of IRS bureaucracy. Where everything's made up and the timelines don't matter! 🤡

Its not just you, bro. The whole system is FUBAR. I filed an amended return 2 years ago and I'm still waiting. TWO YEARS. This is beyond ridiculous.

Two years is just absurd. This is really stressing a lot of people out.

I've been in the same boat, my friend. Filed an amended return last year and it took 11 months to process. The IRS is seriously understaffed and overworked. Hang in there!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Whoa, really? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The government should do better.

I get the skepticism, but it honestly saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny IMO.

How does it work exactly? Do they give you a specific time for the call?

I've used Claimyr, and it actually worked for me. But I agree, it's frustrating that we even need something like this.

While using services like Claimyr might seem like an additional expense, they can be invaluable if you're struggling to get through to the IRS. However, it's also important to weigh the cost against the potential benefit. If you expect a significant refund, it might be worth the $20 to save time and frustration. But remember, it's a third-party service and not officially affiliated with the IRS. Keeping your expectations realistic is key. Additionally, always verify such service's credibility through reviews or by asking others who have used it.

Pro tip: call the IRS first thing in the morning when they open. You're more likely to get through before the lines get jammed.

Thanks for the tip! What time do they open?

They open at 7am local time. Set your alarm and be ready to dial!

Have you tried checking the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website? It's not perfect, but it might give you some info.

Yeah, I've checked that tool like a million times. It just says "Your amended return is in process." Super helpful, right? 🙄

Plot twist: the IRS is actually a front for a secret government time travel experiment. That's why everything takes so long - they're sending our returns to the future! 👽🕰️

Have you tried faxing your inquiry? Sometimes that gets a faster response than calling or mailing.

Faxing? What year is it, 1995? 😂 But seriously, does that actually work?

I heard a rumor that if you include a bag of Skittles with your amended return, it gets processed faster. Worth a shot, right? 🌈

Have you considered hiring a tax professional? They sometimes have special channels to communicate with the IRS and might be able to speed things up.

Here's what I know about amended returns based on my experience and research: 1. Processing time: The IRS says it can take up to 16 weeks (about 4 months) to process an amended return. However, due to backlogs from COVID and staffing issues, many people are experiencing much longer wait times. 2. Checking status: Use the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on IRS.gov. You'll need your SSN, date of birth, and zip code. But be warned, it's often not updated frequently. 3. Contacting the IRS: If it's been more than 16 weeks, you can try calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040. Be prepared for long wait times. 4. Taxpayer Advocate Service: If you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay, the Taxpayer Advocate Service might be able to help. 5. Common reasons for delays: - Errors on the form - Missing information - Identity verification needed - General backlog 6. What not to do: Don't file another amended return. This will only confuse things and cause further delays. Remember, patience is key. The IRS is dealing with millions of returns. Hang in there!
