IRS 120-day review with no prior notices - what to expect?
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I got a letter from the IRS saying they're doing a 120-day review on my case. The weird thing is, I haven't received any other notices or letters from them. I'm kinda freaking out because I don't know what this means or what I should do. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Any advice on what questions I should ask when I finally get through to an agent?

Hey there, I specialize in IRS processing delays and can help explain what's going on with the 120-day review. This usually happens when the IRS needs additional time to verify information on your return, especially with credits like EIC or CTC. The good news is that you don't need to submit any additional documentation unless specifically requested. Based on what I've seen lately, many of these reviews are actually finishing up before the 120 days. If you want a really detailed analysis of your situation, I'd recommend checking out taxr.ai - it's this new AI tool that analyzes your tax docs and gives you specific insights about your refund timeline and any potential holdups. It's been super helpful for my clients dealing with these review situations. The main thing is to stay patient and keep checking your transcript for updates. The review doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem - it's just extra verification.

•it's pretty spot on tbh. it looks at all your docs and explains exactly what codes mean and when you might see movement. saved me hours of googling 💯

•Just used taxr.ai and here's what I got back: My return is actually almost done processing! The system spotted a transaction code that means my review is wrapping up.

Ugh, the IRS and their mysterious ways 🙄 I went through something similar last year. My advice? When you get an agent on the line, ask them specifically why you're under review. Sometimes it's just random, but other times there might be a discrepancy they've spotted. Don't panic though, it's usually not as bad as it seems!

•Thanks for the advice! Did they end up finding anything in your case? How long did the whole process take?

•Nah, turned out to be nothing. Just a random check. Took about 3 months total, but man, those were some stressful months 😅

•3 months?! Jeez, the IRS really knows how to keep us on our toes 🤡

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

•I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth it if you're desperate to talk to someone.

•Idk man, seems kinda sketchy. Has anyone else tried this?

•I've used it twice now. It's legit. Beats sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected constantly.

120-day review? Never heard of it. Are you sure it's not a scam? Double-check that the letter is actually from the IRS. There are a lot of fraudsters out there trying to scare people.

Okay, let me break this down for you: 1. First, don't panic. A 120-day review doesn't necessarily mean you're in trouble. 2. These reviews can happen for various reasons: random selection, discrepancies in reported income, or even just backlog in the system. 3. Here's what you should do: - Verify the letter is legit (check IRS.gov for official contact info) - Gather all your tax documents for the year in question - When you talk to an agent, ask: a) Why was your return selected for review? b) What specific information do they need? c) Will this delay any refund you're expecting? d) Is there a deadline for you to respond? 4. Remember, you have rights as a taxpayer. Don't let them intimidate you. 5. If things get complicated, consider hiring a tax professional. Hang in there, OP. You've got this! 💪

Have you checked your transcript on the IRS website? Sometimes there's more info there than what they send in letters.

•I didn't even know that was a thing! How do I access my transcript?

•Go to IRS.gov and search for 'Get Transcript'. You'll need to create an account if you haven't already. It's pretty straightforward after that.

Ugh, I feel for you OP. The IRS is so behind on everything these days. I've been waiting on a refund for like 8 months now. It's ridiculous.

Plot twist: the 120 days is how long you'll be on hold when you try to call them 😂

Hey @Levi Parker, I totally get the anxiety! I went through a similar 120-day review last year. The lack of prior notices is actually pretty common - sometimes they just pull returns for routine verification without any red flags. A few things that helped me get through it: - Call early in the morning (like 7-8 AM) for shorter hold times - Have your Social Security card, photo ID, and a copy of the return ready - Ask specifically for your "account transcript" - it shows all the behind-the-scenes activity - Don't be afraid to ask the agent to explain any codes you see The waiting is honestly the worst part, but in most cases these reviews wrap up without any issues. Mine took about 10 weeks and turned out to be just a random audit check. Hang in there! 🤞

•This is super helpful, thank you! @Leeann Blackstein The early morning call tip is gold - I never would have thought of that. Did you notice any specific codes on your transcript that indicated the review was wrapping up? I m'hoping to spot some signs of progress when I check mine.

•@Leeann Blackstein Thanks for sharing your experience! The early morning call tip is really smart. I m'curious - when you got your account transcript, were there any specific transaction codes that showed the review was progressing? I m'planning to pull mine tomorrow and would love to know what to look for. Also, did they ever send you any additional paperwork during those 10 weeks, or was it radio silence until it was resolved?

•@Leeann Blackstein This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much for the detailed advice and for sharing your experience. The early morning call tip is brilliant - I ve'been trying to call during lunch breaks and getting nowhere. I m'definitely going to pull my account transcript first thing tomorrow and look for those codes you mentioned. It s'such a relief to hear that most of these reviews end up being routine checks. The waiting really is the worst part when you don t'know what s'happening behind the scenes. Fingers crossed mine wraps up as smoothly as yours did! 🙏

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got my 120-day review letter about 3 weeks ago and like you, zero prior notices. I was panicking at first but after reading through everyone's responses here, I feel a lot better. I actually tried that taxr.ai tool that @Gianni Serpent mentioned and wow - it broke down my transcript in a way that actually made sense! Turns out my review is pretty standard verification stuff, nothing scary. The AI explanation was way clearer than trying to decode all those cryptic IRS codes myself. Also took @Leeann Blackstein's advice about calling early morning and actually got through to someone in 45 minutes (which felt like a miracle). The agent confirmed it's just routine verification and should wrap up within the next month or so. Hang in there OP - from what I'm seeing in this thread, most of these reviews are just the IRS being extra cautious, not because they found actual problems. The waiting sucks but you're definitely not alone in this! 💪

•@Myles Regis This is so reassuring to hear! I m'about 6 weeks into my 120-day review and was starting to spiral a bit. The fact that you got actual answers from calling early morning gives me hope - I ve'been putting off making the call because I was dreading the hold time. Quick question - when you used taxr.ai, did it explain what specific transaction codes to watch for that indicate progress? I pulled my transcript but honestly it looks like hieroglyphics to me 😅 Also, did the agent give you any timeline estimates or just the general within "a month timeframe?" Thanks for sharing your experience - it s'nice to know there are others going through the same thing right now!

I'm dealing with something similar right now! Got my 120-day review notice about 2 months ago and it's been radio silence since then. Reading through all these responses has been super helpful - especially the tip about calling early morning and checking the transcript for codes. @Gianni Serpent I'm definitely going to try that taxr.ai tool you mentioned. Trying to decode IRS transcripts on my own has been like reading a foreign language 😵💫 One thing I learned from calling (after being on hold for literally 3 hours) is that these reviews are way more common than I thought. The agent told me they're backed up from pandemic processing delays and are being extra thorough with verification now. She said as long as I filed everything correctly, it should resolve without me needing to do anything. @Levi Parker - try not to stress too much about it. From what everyone's saying here, it sounds like most of these end up being routine checks that just take forever to process. The IRS really needs to work on their communication though - getting a random 120-day review letter with zero context is terrifying! Hang in there everyone! 🤞
