ID Verification Appointment Monday - How Much Longer After That?

Just curious how long I'll be waiting for my refund after my identity verification appointment on Monday. I never got the official letter in the mail (of course not, that would be too easy šŸ˜…), but managed to schedule an appointment anyway. Anyone know how quickly they process returns after you verify in person? This homeowner needs to budget for some surprise plumbing repairs, and knowing when that sweet refund cash hits would be super helpful! Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can share!

Processing times vary after verification. Usually 9 weeks or less. Could be faster. Depends on backlog. My verification took 6 weeks last year. Watch for transcript updates. They're more reliable than WMR. Each case is different though.

Oh my goodness, 9 WEEKS?! That's so much longer than I expected! I'm already feeling anxious about waiting that long after my verification appointment. Did you have to do anything special during those 6 weeks to keep your case moving forward?

Does the processing time depend on: ā€¢ What time of year you verify? ā€¢ Whether you have credits like CTC or EITC? ā€¢ If there were other issues with your return besides identity? I'm wondering if there's a way to determine where you might fall in that 9-week window.

Thanks for this info! 6 weeks is way better than what my cousin experienced - he waited almost 4 months after his ID verification last year. I guess I should prepare for the worst but hope for the best with this timeline.

Bring EVERYTHING to ur appt! DL, SS card, bills w/ ur address, last yr's return if u have it. IRS website says 9 wks max after verification but tbh it's usually faster. Pro tip: check ur transcript every Weds/Thurs AM - that's when they update. Don't rely on WMR, it's always behind.

I think bringing extra documentation is definitely the way to go. When I had my verification appointment last year, I brought way more than required and it helped things go smoothly. The agent actually commented that most people don't come as prepared, and I believe that helped my case move a bit faster.

What happens if you don't have last year's return? Like if you're new to filing or lost your copy? Is the process like trying to open a bank vault with only half the combination, or will they work with you?

I appreciate this practical advice. Knowing exactly what to bring can make all the difference in these situations. I'll be sure to gather everything you mentioned before my appointment.

I just went through Identity Verification Protocol last month. The Internal Revenue Manual states processing should resume within 9 weeks post-verification, but my Cycle Code updated just 17 days after my appointment. Make sure you bring two forms of government-issued identification and proof of residence. The Transaction Code 971 with Action Code 5071 should appear on your transcript after verification is complete, indicating your return is back in normal processing.

I understand how frustrating this waiting game can be. Here's what you should do: 1. Bring multiple forms of ID to your appointment 2. Ask the IRS representative for a specific timeframe for your case 3. Request a direct contact number for follow-up 4. If you don't see movement in 3-4 weeks, consider calling the IRS When I couldn't get through their phone lines after weeks of trying, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to connect with an agent. They got me through in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days. The agent was able to tell me exactly where my return was in the process and when to expect my refund. Definitely worth it when you're dealing with delays after verification.

Have you checked your transcripts online? That's where you'll see the most accurate status. After verification, does your account show any freeze codes? Those would indicate additional issues beyond identity verification. Most returns resume processing within 2-3 weeks after successful verification, but the official timeline is up to 9 weeks. Your particular situation depends on several factors: time of year, complexity of return, and whether there are other review flags. I'd suggest checking your transcript weekly rather than daily to avoid unnecessary stress.

According to IRM 25.25.6, identity verification cases are prioritized based on verification method and filing date. Per Publication 5027, the IRS typically resumes processing within 9 weeks after successful identity verification. However, this timeframe is not guaranteed. Current processing statistics indicate approximately 21 days for electronic returns with no issues after identity verification is complete. Paper returns take substantially longer. The verification simply removes the identity hold; it doesn't expedite other processing steps.

I had my verification appointment on February 12, 2024, and my refund was deposited on March 8, 2024 - exactly 25 days later. My transcript updated on March 1 showing the release of the verification hold. I brought my driver's license, passport, social security card, W-2, last year's tax return, and a utility bill. The agent said I was overprepared but that it made the process smoother. Check your transcript on April 15 and April 22 - those should be key update dates based on your Monday appointment timing.

Did you have any tax credits on your return? And was yours a simple W-2 return or did you have other forms of income?
