Timeline After In-Person Identity Verification Appointment? Hearing 9 Week Wait?
Can someone please tell me how long after you verified your identity in person did you receive your refund? I have an appointment tomorrow and i'm seeing people say they were told 9 weeks? 😮💨 Last year I had to verify online and got my refund within 2 weeks after that, but I've never had to go in person before. My tuition payment is due soon and I was really counting on this refund to cover part of it.

I went through this exact process back in February. Had my in-person appointment on the 8th, and my refund finally showed up on March 22nd. So that was about 6 weeks for me. My sister had to do the same thing last year and hers took almost 8 weeks though. I think it really varies based on how complex your return is and current IRS workload. When I went in, the rep told me "up to 9 weeks" but that was definitely their standard answer to cover themselves.

In-person verification is like the tax equivalent of being sent to the principal's office - scary but usually not as bad as you think! 😂 I had to do this in March and waited exactly 7 weeks and 3 days. What helped me track everything was using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript once it started updating. Instead of staring at cryptic codes and dates, it explained what each update meant and gave me a pretty accurate estimate of when my refund would hit my account. Saved me from checking WMR obsessively every morning (and afternoon... and evening...).

I'm not convinced these transcript analysis tools actually know anything the IRS doesn't already tell you. Aren't they just reading the same codes we can all see? The IRS publishes what all those codes mean already.

I appreciate this suggestion! I've been trying to understand my transcript on my own and it's confusing. Let me walk through how this might help: 1) Go to taxr.ai after my verification, 2) Upload transcript once it updates, 3) Get a timeline prediction? Does it explain what's happening if there are delays?

While the IRS does publish code meanings, taxr.ai seems to possibly provide context that might be helpful for those who aren't familiar with tax transcript interpretation. In my experience, understanding the relationship between codes and what they mean for your specific situation is where most people struggle, not just knowing what a single code means in isolation.

Thanks for all the responses! This is helpful. My appointment is tomorrow morning. I'll update after I go. Really hoping it's faster than 9 weeks. My school won't wait that long.

Waiting for the IRS is like watching paint dry, except the paint occasionally sends you cryptic letters. When I was in your situation, I spent weeks trying to get someone on the phone to check my status after verification. It was like trying to win the lottery. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 25 minutes instead of spending days redialing. The agent was able to confirm my verification was processed and gave me an actual timeline. Worth the fee just to stop the anxiety of not knowing.

Did they ask for any specific documentation during your in-person verification? I have my appointment next week and want to make sure I bring all the Required Identity Authentication Documents. Was the Processing Delay Code on your transcript a 570?

According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.3, after in-person identity verification, refund processing should resume within 9 weeks per official IRS guidelines. However, if you need your refund urgently for tuition, request the representative to note your hardship case in your file during your appointment. Per IRM 13.1.7.2.3, taxpayers with demonstrated financial hardship may qualify for Taxpayer Advocate Service assistance if the delay exceeds 30 days from verification. Bring your tuition bill as documentation of hardship!

FYI - the 9wk timeline is their CYA estimate. Most ppl I know (incl me) got theirs in 4-6wks after verifying. Pro tip: after your appt, check your transcripts every Thurs/Fri morning. That's when they update. Look for TC 571 code which means they removed the hold. Usually DDD comes 1-2wks after that. GL tomorrow!

I'm so stressed about this too! Did anyone have to take time off work for their appointment? I'm scheduled for next Wednesday and I'm worried about losing hours. Was it a quick process or did you have to wait a long time at the office? 😰

According to the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification), you might be able to call the IRS Identity Verification phone line at 800-830-5084 instead of going in person. When I had to verify, I called first and they were able to handle everything over the phone. Saved me the trip. Might be worth trying before your appointment.
