How to get my previous tax return copy when my preparer won't respond?

I need to get a copy of my 2022 tax return for a mortgage application but the tax preparer I used isn't responding to any of my emails or calls. I've tried reaching out at least 10 times over the past month with no luck. They were recommended by a friend and seemed professional at the time, but now they've completely ghosted me. The mortgage lender needs this documentation by next Thursday and I'm starting to panic. Is there a way to get my return directly from the IRS? How long would that take? Has anyone dealt with this before?

Yes, you have a few options to get a copy of your tax return from the IRS: 1. Request a transcript online through the IRS website - go to IRS.gov and use the "Get Transcript" tool. You can get different types of transcripts (tax return transcript shows most line items, account transcript shows basic data). Usually available immediately if you can verify your identity online. 2. Use Form 4506-T to request a transcript by mail (takes 5-10 business days). 3. Use Form 4506 to request an actual copy of your filed return (costs $43 and takes up to 75 days - probably too slow for your mortgage deadline). For your mortgage application, a transcript should be sufficient - most lenders accept these. The transcript is free, and if you can create an online account, you can get it immediately. If your mortgage lender needs the actual full return with all schedules, you might need to explain the situation and see if they'll accept the transcript instead.

Thank you so much! I had no idea I could get a transcript online. I'm going to try that right now. Do you know if the transcript will show all my income sources? That's what the lender is most concerned about.

Yes, the Tax Return Transcript will show most line items including AGI and all income sources that were reported on your original return. It doesnt show supporting schedules but has the main info lenders need. If you have trouble with the online verification, call the IRS automated transcript line at 800-908-9946.

Just to add - I went thru this last year with my mortgage. They accepted the transcript no problem, but they needed the "Return Transcript" not the "Account Transcript" so make sure u get the right one!

This is super helpful! I'll make sure to get the Return Transcript specifically.

I was in almost the exact same situation last summer. Trying to get a mortgage and my tax guy went MIA. Honestly, the IRS website was such a pain and I couldn't verify my identity online. I found this tool called taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It helped me understand exactly what was on my transcript and formatted everything the way my lender needed it. Saved me so much stress and my loan officer actually commented on how organized everything was. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more! It basically translates all the IRS codes and jargon into plain English. It showed me all my payment history, refund status, and even flagged potential issues. Then it organized everything into a format that my mortgage company actually preferred over the raw transcript. Seriously, I was about to pull my hair out dealing with the IRS website before finding this.

Just tried taxr.ai after seeing your comment and WOW! Not only did it help me get my transcript organized for my mortgage application, but it actually found a discrepancy in my filing that I wouldn't have caught otherwise. This tool is absolutely essential for anyone dealing with tax documents. Everyone needs to know about this!

Does it cost money? The IRS transcripts are free so I'm wondering what the benefit is

Yes there is a cost, but compared to the headache it saved me (and potentially thousands in mortgage delays) it was 100% worth it. The IRS transcripts are free but they're basically hieroglyphics if you don't know what you're looking at.

After my previous tax preparer went out of business without telling anyone, I was in the same boat. I tried calling the IRS for weeks but could never get through (always "due to high call volume" BS). Finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual human at the IRS in like 20 minutes. They helped me get my transcript and explained everything. Best money I ever spent considering I was about to lose my mind sitting on hold for hours and getting nowhere.

Does this actually work? I've been trying to reach someone at the IRS for literally 3 months now...

100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate. The app basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is available. I was able to ask all my questions about getting my transcript and what I needed for the mortgage company. Wish I had known about it months earlier tbh

idk sounds shady af. why would you need an app to call the IRS?

Have you tried calling the IRS lately? 🤣 It's literally impossible to get through. You wait on hold for 2+ hours and then often get disconnected. This just holds your place in line so you don't have to sit there with your phone on speaker losing your mind. Nothing shady about it.

Did your preparer e-file for you? If so, try contacting the software company they used. I used to work at a tax prep place and sometimes clients could get copies directly from the software company if they knew which one was used.

this exact thing happened to me!!! my tax guy was actually arrested for fraud 💀 i couldn't get my returns and freaked out. ended up having to file form 4506. it took about 3 weeks to get my stuff back, but was pretty simple process.

OMG that's crazy!! My person hasn't been arrested (that I know of) but I'm starting to wonder what happened to them. Did you have to pay for the 4506?

yep it was like $43 per tax year. kinda annoying to pay for MY OWN tax info but whatever. the system is broken af. hope u get ur mortgage stuff figured out in time!

Is it possible your preparer had you sign a Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization)? If so, they might still have access to your transcripts even if they're ignoring you, which is concerning. You should consider revoking that authorization by submitting a new 8821 with the revocation box checked. Just a thought as you move forward with getting your own transcripts.

I'm not sure if I signed that... I'll definitely look into revoking any authorizations though. Thanks for bringing this up, I hadn't even thought about it!

the system is completely broken. last year i spent 6 months trying to get a copy of my return from 2020 and eventually gave up. its freaking ridiculous that we cant just login to an account and see all our tax info in one place like a normal country would have. the irs is still running on technology from 1982 🤡

Preach! I heard they still use computers from the 1960s for some of their systems. Like, literal magnetic tape drives. Our tax dollars at work 🙄

And yet they somehow manage to find you instantly if you underpay by $10 🤔

For real!! They know exactly how much we owe but make us figure it out ourselves, and then punish us if we get it wrong. make it make sense 🙃

I work in mortgage lending. We accept tax transcripts directly from the IRS in lieu of full returns. In fact, we often require them anyway as verification. The online Get Transcript tool is fastest, but if you can't verify your identity online (which happens a lot), we can request the transcripts for you with your signed permission using Form 4506-T. Ask your lender about this option - it might actually work out better for both of you.

-

Raul Neal

That's good to know! I'll definitely talk to my loan officer about this option. Thanks for the industry perspective.

Not to freak you out, but have you checked that your returns were actually filed? I had a super sketchy preparer once who took my money and then never filed my return. I would double check with the IRS that they have your return on file before you waste time trying to get a copy of something that might not exist.

😱 I never even considered this possibility! Now I'm really worried... I got a refund so I assumed everything was filed correctly, but now I'm second-guessing everything.

If you got a refund you're probably fine! Just wanted to mention it since it happened to me and it was a whole nightmare to fix. Good luck with everything!

Go to IRS.gov, create account, download transcript. Takes 15 minutes tops if you have all your verification info handy (credit card, loan account number, etc). Problem solved. Been doing this for years.

Whatever you do, don't pay for those online tax record retrieval services. Complete scams. Stick with IRS.gov or the official channels mentioned by others here.

This! I paid $89 to one of those services and all they did was send me a link to the IRS website. Complete ripoff.

Before you go through all this trouble with the IRS, have you tried stopping by your tax preparer's office in person? Sometimes these small businesses are terrible at returning calls/emails but will help you right away if you show up. Just a thought.

-

Raul Neal

I actually tried that last week and the office was closed during their posted business hours. Left a note on the door but still no response. I'm starting to wonder if they went out of business?

Yikes that's not a good sign. Definitely time to go directly to the IRS then. Good luck!

Future tip: ALWAYS keep digital and paper copies of your tax returns for at least 7 years. I learned this lesson the hard way too.

This this this! I have a specific folder in my Google Drive and I immediately save a PDF copy as soon as my return is filed. Has saved me so many headaches.

im literally an accountant and getting transcripts is a NIGHTMARE even for me. the IRS website never verifies my identity so i have to mail in forms and wait forever. last time i tried getting a transcript for a client i used claimyr.com to get an agent on the phone and they were able to help immediately. talking to an agent got the transcript faxed over in 20 minutes instead of waiting weeks. just my two cents.

I can second this - I'm a tax attorney and even I have trouble navigating the IRS systems sometimes. The phone trick with Claimyr saved a client's closing when we needed documentation on short notice.
