How to access my 1040X amended return transcript after filing through TurboTax?
Filed an amended return thru TurboTax back in May (biggest mistake ever) and I need to check the status. I can see my original transcript on the IRS website but I don't know how to access my amended return transcript. does it show up in the same place as the regular transcript or is there a seperate area where I can find it? The status checker on Where's My Amended Return only says its been received but it's been almost 4 months now and I'm getting anxious. any help would be appreciated!

There isn't a separate transcript for amended returns. What you need to look for are TC 971 and TC 977 codes on your Account Transcript. The 971 means your amended return was received, and the 977 means it was processed. You can also check for a TC 290 code that shows any additional tax assessment or TC 291 for reduced assessment depending on your amendment. The IRS processing time for amended returns is officially 16 weeks but honestly it's taking 6-8 months for most people right now. Check your Account Transcript (not the Return Transcript) on the IRS website under 'Get Transcript Online' to see these codes.

•thank you! i had no idea it could take 6-8 months... that's ridiculous. when i look at my account transcript should I be looking at 2023 or 2022 (the year i amended)?

•You should look at the tax year that you amended. So if you amended your 2022 return, look at the 2022 Account Transcript. And yeah, the timeframes are crazy right now. The IRS is severely backlogged.

I was in the exact same situation last year. After waiting for months with no updates, I finally discovered taxr.ai and it was a game changer. Instead of trying to decipher all the tax codes myself, it analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was happening with my amended return and when I could expect it to be processed. Saved me hours of research and stress. Their analysis was spot on about my processing timeline too. https://taxr.ai is definitely worth checking out - way better than the guesswork I was doing before.

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does way more than just read it. It actually interprets all the codes and explains what each one means specifically for YOUR situation. It showed me exactly where my amended return was in the process and gave me a timeline based on current IRS processing patterns. Totally worth it for the peace of mind alone.

•Just tried taxr.ai for my amended return issues - holy crap why isn't everyone using this?? It literally told me exactly what was happening with my return AND when to expect my refund. No more guessing or anxiety. This should be the first thing anyone does when dealing with tax transcript confusion!

•You upload your transcript that you already downloaded from the IRS. You're not giving them any information they don't already have access to anyway. And it's encrypted.

After dealing with a similar issue, I tried calling the IRS nonstop for weeks. Always got the 'high call volume' message and hung up on. Finally found claimyr.com which got me a callback from an actual IRS agent. The agent confirmed my amended return was in process and even expedited it since I was having financial hardship. Talking to an actual person solved in 15 minutes what I spent months trying to figure out online.

•Yep, worked for me. Got a callback in about 2 hours. The agent was super helpful and actually fixed an issue with my amended return that would have delayed it even longer.

•It's not free but honestly it was the best money I've spent all year. Getting my refund released early saved me from late fees on other bills, so it more than paid for itself.

•I felt the same way at first, but after spending literally hours on hold and getting disconnected repeatedly, I was desperate. Have you tried calling the IRS lately? It's basically impossible.

I hate to break it to you but amended returns take forever rn. I filed mine in February and didn't see any movement until July. The Where's My Amended Return tool is practically useless - it just shows the bare minimum status updates. You're better off checking the account transcript directly on the IRS website by looking for the codes that the first commenter mentioned.

turbotax is the WORST for amended returns!!! I had the same issue last year. Their system doesn't even track the amended stuff properly. Pro tip: You can create an account on the IRS website (irs.gov) and view your transcripts there. Look for the "account transcript" not the return transcript. The account transcript will show all updates including codes 971 (amended return received) and 977 (amended return processed). also I highly recommend getting a tax pro next year instead of turbotax...learned that the hard way lol

•I definitely won't use TurboTax again. the whole experience has been awful. do you know how long yours took to process after you saw the 971 code?

•Mine took about 5 months from the 971 code to the 977 code appearing. And then another 3 weeks for the refund to hit my bank account. It was painfully slow 😫

There's no specific "amended transcript" - it all shows up in your regular account transcript. You'll see transaction codes that indicate amended return status. If you call, prepare to wait 2+ hours if you even get through. I've been thru this 3 times sadly and the system is broken af.

Go to IRS.gov > Get Your Tax Record > Get Transcript Online. Login and look at your Account Transcript for the year you amended. Check for these codes: - TC 971: Amended return received - TC 977: Amended return processed - TC 290/291: Tax adjustment (increase or decrease) - TC 846: Refund issued (if you're due one) If you don't see TC 977 yet, it's still in processing. Current wait times are ridiculous - I'm at 7 months and counting for mine. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool is useless and rarely updates.

•This is the correct answer 👆 also worth noting that the IRS is severely understaffed post-pandemic so everything is taking 2-3 times longer than normal.

•And if you don't already have an IRS online account set up, you'll need to verify your identity. have your drivers license and some other id ready when you create the account.

I just went thru this nightmare. TurboTax is GARBAGE for amended returns! Check the irs website transcript for your account (not return transcript). Look for code 971 (amended return received) and code 977 (amended return processed). If you only see 971 keep waiting... and waiting... and waiting...

OMG i feel ur pain! Turbotax is the WORST for ammended stuff. I've been waiting for almost 9 months now 😭 you can check ur transcript on the IRS website but honestly they take FOREVERRRR to process these. Check the account transcript (not return transcript) for codes 971 and 977.

There is no separate "amended tax transcript". You just need to look at your Account Transcript on the IRS website for the tax year you amended. As others have mentioned, look for transaction code 971 which means they received it and code 977 which means it's been processed. But heads up - it takes FOREVER for the IRS to process amended returns these days. I'm in month 5 of waiting for mine.

Not sure why everyone keeps filing through turbotax when there are so many better options out there. anyway to answer your question: Log into your IRS account and look at your Account Transcript (not Return or Record of Account transcripts). The Account Transcript will show codes 971 (amended received) and 977 (amended processed) when those events happen. FYI the normal processing time is 16 weeks but its taking 20+ weeks for most people currently.

•FreeTaxUSA is WAY better and cheaper. TaxSlayer is good too. Both handle amended returns much better than TurboTax in my experience. Or if you have complicated stuff, an actual CPA is worth every penny.

Here's my advice after going through amended return hell last year: First, create an account on IRS.gov if you haven't already. Then go to the 'Get Transcript' section and download your 'Account Transcript' for the tax year you amended. Look for Transaction Code 971 (this means they received your amended return) and Transaction Code 977 (this means it was processed). If you don't see the 977 code yet, it's still being processed. Also, you can call the IRS Amended Return hotline at 866-464-2050 but good luck getting through - I had to call 47 times before I didn't get a busy signal.

•thank you! i see the 971 code but no 977 code yet. I'll try the hotline but not getting my hopes up based on what everyone is saying

•Yeah the wait is brutal right now. Without the 977 code it's definitely still in processing. One trick: call right when they open (7am) or right before they close (7pm) for slightly better chances of getting through.

•That hotline number hardly ever works. I tried for weeks. Finally I used claimyr.com and got through to an agent who actually helped me. Cost money but saved my sanity.

Former tax preparer here. Login to your IRS.gov account and look at your ACCOUNT transcript (not return transcript) for the year you amended. You'll see codes that tell you the status - 971 means received, 977 means processed. There's no separate "amended transcript" - it all shows in your regular account transcript. Be prepared to wait though - current processing times are 20+ weeks minimum.

So sick of the IRS and their terrible systems. I filed my amended return in April and received notification that it was received, but I've heard nothing since then. I found that the IRS published expected timeline is 20 weeks for processing amended returns, but in reality, it's taking 6+ months. Your best bet is to create an account on the official IRS website and check your account transcript directly. That's where you'll see all activity on your account, including amended return processing.

I spent hours trying to figure this out last month for my amended return from January (still processing btw 🙃). I actually found a tool at taxr.ai that analyzed my transcript and explained everything in plain english. It told me exactly where my amended return was in the process and when I could expect it to be completed based on current processing times. Saved me so much confusion.

•It's not free but worth every penny if you're as confused by tax transcripts as I was. They explained exactly what was happening with my amended return when the IRS website was just showing 'received'.

The amended return information shows up on your regular Account Transcript, not a separate document. Log into IRS.gov and pull your Account Transcript for the tax year you amended (so if you amended 2022, pull the 2022 transcript). Look for transaction code TC 971 which means they received your amended return, and TC 977 which means it's been fully processed. Unfortunately, the current processing times are absolutely brutal - 6-8 months is becoming the norm rather than the exception. I filed mine in March and I'm still waiting too. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool is basically useless since it rarely updates. Your best bet is checking that Account Transcript every few weeks to see if the TC 977 code appears. Hang in there!

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'm new to dealing with amended returns and all these transaction codes are confusing. Just to clarify - if I see TC 971 but no TC 977 yet, that means they have my return but haven't finished processing it, right? And there's basically nothing I can do except wait? The 6-8 month timeline is honestly shocking - I had no idea it would take this long when I filed through TurboTax.

•Yes, exactly! TC 971 means they received it but TC 977 means it's actually done processing. Unfortunately there's really nothing you can do to speed it up - the IRS is just massively backlogged right now. I made the same mistake using TurboTax for my amended return last year and learned the hard way that their timeline estimates are completely unrealistic. The 16-20 week official timeline they quote is basically meaningless at this point. Your best bet is just checking that Account Transcript every few weeks and trying not to stress about it (easier said than done, I know!). At least you can see the TC 971 code so you know they have it in their system.

I'm going through the exact same frustrating situation right now! Filed my amended return through TurboTax in March and have been anxiously checking for updates ever since. Based on what everyone's saying here, it sounds like I need to stop relying on the "Where's My Amended Return" tool and start checking my Account Transcript directly on the IRS website. The fact that it can take 6-8 months is absolutely mind-boggling - why doesn't TurboTax warn people about these realistic timeframes upfront? Thanks everyone for the detailed explanations about the TC codes, this thread has been more helpful than any official IRS documentation I've found!

•You're absolutely right about TurboTax not being upfront about the real timelines! I think they still show the old 16-week estimate which is completely outdated now. I'm in a similar boat - filed in April and still waiting. The Account Transcript method everyone mentioned here is definitely the way to go. Once you see that TC 971 code, at least you know it's in the system, but then it's just the painful waiting game for TC 977. Honestly this whole experience has made me realize I should probably find a local CPA next year instead of dealing with TurboTax's amended return nightmare again.

I feel your pain! I went through this exact same nightmare last year with TurboTax. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool is basically worthless - it barely updates and gives you no real information. What you need to do is log into your IRS account at irs.gov and pull your Account Transcript (NOT the return transcript) for the tax year you amended. Look for these transaction codes: TC 971 means they received your amended return, and TC 977 means it's fully processed. If you only see the 971 code, you're still in the waiting game unfortunately. The official timeline is 16 weeks but realistically it's taking 6-8 months right now due to massive backlogs. I know it's frustrating but hang in there - at least once you see the codes you'll have a better idea of where things stand!

•Thanks for breaking this down so clearly! I just checked my Account Transcript and I can see the TC 971 code from when I filed in May, but no TC 977 yet. It's both relieving and frustrating to know that at least it's in their system but could still be months away from completion. I definitely won't be using TurboTax for amended returns again - seems like they make the process way more confusing than it needs to be. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, it's helped me understand what to expect instead of just stressing about the lack of updates!

I went through this exact situation with my amended return last year! The key thing to understand is that there's no separate "amended return transcript" - everything shows up on your regular Account Transcript on the IRS website. You'll want to log into irs.gov, go to "Get Transcript Online" and pull your Account Transcript for the tax year you amended (so if you amended your 2022 return, look at the 2022 Account Transcript). Look for transaction code TC 971 which means they received your amended return, and TC 977 which means it's been processed. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool is honestly pretty useless - it rarely updates and gives minimal info. Unfortunately, the processing times right now are brutal - despite the official 16-week timeline, most people are waiting 6-8 months or even longer. I know it's incredibly frustrating, especially when you're anxious about the status, but at least checking the Account Transcript will give you a clearer picture of where things actually stand in the process.

•This is such a helpful breakdown, thank you! I'm dealing with the same situation and had no idea about the difference between Account Transcript vs Return Transcript. Just checked mine and found the TC 971 code from June but no TC 977 yet - at least now I know what to look for instead of just refreshing that useless "Where's My Amended Return" page every day. The 6-8 month wait time is honestly shocking though, especially when TurboTax made it seem like it would be much faster. Really glad I found this thread because the IRS website explanations are so confusing!

I'm dealing with a very similar situation right now! Filed my amended return through TurboTax in April and have been going crazy trying to track the status. After reading through all these responses, I finally understand that I need to check my Account Transcript on the IRS website instead of relying on that useless "Where's My Amended Return" tool. Just logged in and found the TC 971 code showing they received it, but no TC 977 yet which means it's still processing. The 6-8 month timeline everyone is mentioning is absolutely insane - I had no idea it would take this long when I filed! TurboTax definitely doesn't prepare you for the reality of amended return processing times. Thanks to everyone who explained the transaction codes - this has been way more helpful than anything I could find on the official IRS site. Guess I'll just have to be patient and keep checking that Account Transcript every few weeks. Never using TurboTax for amendments again though!
