How to Get a Taxpayer Advocate? Need Help Fast

I need a tax advocate. My case is urgent. I'm new to US tax system. Been waiting for refund for 3 months. Nobody answers the phone. I tried calling many times. Please help me. I don't know what to do next. Thank you for any advice.

Getting a Taxpayer Advocate can be somewhat challenging, especially during tax season. You might want to try filling out Form 911 (Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance), which is generally the official way to request help. However, in my experience, it's possible that your situation may not qualify as a "hardship" by IRS standards, unless you're facing potential financial difficulties or have been waiting for an unusually long time.

Have you tried calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service directly? As of April 12, 2024, they have separate phone numbers for each state. What specific issue are you having with your refund? Did you check your transcripts on the IRS website to see what might be causing the delay?

Def agree w/ checking transcripts first. TAS won't take your case unless you've already tried normal channels. They're super backed up rn and only taking hardship cases tbh.

Thank you for mentioning the state-specific TAS numbers. I wasn't aware they had different contact information based on location. Is there a directory where one can find these numbers? I'm curious about the criteria they use to determine which cases qualify for advocacy.

Ugh, I'm so tired of people suggesting to "just call" the TAS! Have you actually tried calling them lately? I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through last month!

I went through this exact same situation last year. Called the IRS for weeks with no answer. I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They told me exactly why my refund was delayed and helped me file the right paperwork for TAS assistance. The agent can determine if you qualify for a taxpayer advocate and can sometimes initiate the process for you. Saved me months of waiting and frustration.

I've been through the TAS process exactly 2 times. They don't take every case. You need to show a hardship like eviction, utility shutoff, or medical emergency. If you've waited exactly 90 days for your refund, that usually qualifies too. I understand how frustrating this is. The system isn't designed for people new to the country.

I was in the same boat last year - tax nightmare that had me eating ramen for weeks! 🍜 Finally tried https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it explained exactly why my refund was delayed and what codes meant I qualified for TAS help. Saved me from having to pay a tax pro $200+ just to tell me the same thing. Their transcript analyzer showed me exactly what to tell the TAS about my case.

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe you may need to document all your attempts to resolve this issue before applying for TAS assistance. Perhaps consider gathering phone records showing your call attempts, any correspondence you've sent, and possibly reference numbers from previous interactions? Time might be running out if you need that refund soon...

I fought with the IRS for 7 months last year over an error they made. Couldn't I have used that time better? Absolutely. Did I finally get a taxpayer advocate? Yes. The key was persistence and documentation. I called every Tuesday at 7:58am exactly - that's when my local office opened. Wouldn't you know it, I finally got through? The advocate fixed everything in 3 weeks that I couldn't fix in 7 months. Worth every minute of effort.

According to irs.gov/taxpayer-advocate, you can qualify for TAS if you're experiencing financial hardship or if the IRS hasn't resolved your issue through normal channels. I'm also new to this process and trying to figure it out. Has anyone actually submitted Form 911 online? The website says you can fax it, but I'm not sure if that's faster than mailing.
