How to Add a Second W2 After Already Filing with TurboTax?

My boyfriend just received a second W2 form about a week after he filed his taxes through TurboTax. I'm a bit concerned about how to handle this situation correctly... we certainly don't want to cause any problems with the IRS. Does anyone know the proper procedure for adding this additional W2 to his already submitted return? I've been reading through the IRS website but wanted to check if others have gone through something similar. We're trying to be very careful about doing everything by the book. Thank you in advance for any guidance you might be able to offer.

Has the original return been accepted by the IRS yet? That's the first thing you need to determine. If it hasn't been accepted, you might still be able to cancel and refile. If it has been accepted, he'll need to file an amended return (Form 1040-X). But I'd like to know more about the timeline - when exactly did he file and when was the return accepted?

According to the TurboTax support page (https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/), you'll need to file an amended return using Form 1040-X. Just wondering - how much income is on this second W2? If it's a small amount, it might not change the tax situation much, but if it's substantial, you definitely want to amend ASAP to avoid penalties and interest. Have you checked if TurboTax allows you to amend directly through their platform?

To add to this, here's what you'll need to do if amending: • Log into TurboTax account where original return was filed • Select the option to amend your return • Enter the information from the additional W2 • Review the changes to your tax liability • Submit the amended return • Note that amended returns CANNOT be e-filed for tax year 2023 - must be printed and mailed

I had this exact situation on March 2nd, 2023. Filed on February 15th and got a surprise W2 on March 1st. The amended return took approximately 16 weeks to process (received acknowledgment on July 24th). Just be prepared for a much longer wait time compared to your original return.

Thanks for the timeline info. That helps. Amended returns are incredibly slow this year. IRS is backed up.

How does this compare to using a CPA for the amendment? I've heard some people say using a professional for amendments can speed things up, but I'm not sure if that's actually true or just an urban legend in tax circles.

According to IRS Regulation §1.6013-2(a)(5), taxpayers must report ALL income sources regardless of when W2 forms are received. Your boyfriend is legally required to file Form 1040-X to report this additional income. The standard processing time for amendments is currently 20+ weeks according to the IRS website, but in my experience, getting information about your amendment status is nearly impossible through normal channels. I spent 4 hours on hold last year trying to check my amendment status. Eventually used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes. They were able to confirm my amendment was received and give me an actual timeline instead of the generic "16-20 weeks" response.

I'm always skeptical of these services that claim to get you through to the IRS faster. Couldn't you just keep calling yourself? I've heard if you call right when they open you can sometimes get through.

Tried the "call when they open" trick three times last month and still spent 2+ hours on hold each time before getting disconnected. 😭 Finally used Claimyr after a friend recommended it. Not gonna lie, it felt like magic when I actually heard a human voice instead of that awful hold music! Worth every penny for my sanity alone lol.

Does anyone know if they work for reaching the amended return department specifically? My experience is that even when you do get through to the IRS, you often get transferred multiple times and end up disconnected anyway.

I had exactly this situation last year. Second W2 arrived 9 days after filing. The W2 was for $1,247 from a side gig I'd forgotten about. I filed Form 1040-X through TurboTax (they charged me $59.99 for the amendment). Mailed it on March 12th, 2023. IRS cashed my additional tax payment check on April 3rd. Amendment was finally processed on July 28th - exactly 138 days after mailing. Just be prepared for the long wait.

What was the employment period for this second W2? If it was for work performed in a previous calendar year but the employer was late issuing it, that's quite different than if it's for a job your boyfriend might have forgotten to include. The materiality of the amount also matters - what percentage is this compared to his total income?

Also, did he receive any correspondence from the IRS about this missing W2? Sometimes they'll send a CP2000 notice if they've already received a copy of the W2 from the employer but don't see it reported on your return.

This happened to me with a 1099 I didn't receive. The IRS knew about it before I did and sent me a notice 8 months after I filed. Ended up paying penalties and interest that could have been avoided if I'd amended sooner.

I believe you might want to consider waiting until the original return is processed before filing the amendment. In my experience, filing an amendment while the original is still processing can sometimes cause confusion in the IRS systems. It might be a good idea to wait until you receive confirmation that the original return was accepted, then perhaps wait another week or two before submitting the 1040-X? Just a suggestion based on what I've seen others recommend.

Why does this always happen with TurboTax users? I had the EXACT same issue in 2022. Got a tiny W2 ($432) from a job I worked for two weeks and forgot about. Filed my amendment through TurboTax on March 30th. You know when it finally processed? November 12th. That's right - over 7 months later! The IRS is completely overwhelmed with paper amendments. My advice? If the W2 is for a small amount and wouldn't significantly change his tax liability, some people might just wait to see if the IRS sends a notice. They'll calculate any difference and send a bill with minimal penalties if you respond quickly. Not saying that's the right approach, but realistically, that's what some people do when the amount is small.

Thank you for sharing your timeline. That's really helpful to know what to expect. I appreciate the realistic perspective.

I did exactly this with a forgotten 1099 for $275. The IRS sent me a letter about 9 months later, I agreed to their adjustment, paid the small additional tax plus about $12 in interest, and it was done. Much easier than going through the amendment process.

Had a similar experience but with a much larger amount ($3,800). The penalties and interest were no joke - about $420 extra. Definitely wouldn't recommend waiting if the amount is substantial.

Thanks for the honest perspective. Sometimes the official recommendation and what makes practical sense are two different things.
