How long does it typically take to go from submitted to approved on tax refund status?
So I just filed my taxes last week and was honestly kinda shocked that I'm getting a refund this year (wasn't expecting that at all). I submitted everything through TurboTax and got the confirmation email that the IRS received my return. Now I'm checking the Where's My Refund tool every few hours like a crazy person lol. I know they say it takes up to 21 days to actually get the refund in your account, but I'm confused about the different statuses. How long should it take to go from "Return Received" to "Refund Approved"? Is that also 21 days or is that faster? This is my first time getting money back in like 3 years so I'm a bit rusty on how the whole process works. Anyone know the typical timeline for seeing that status change? I'm so impatient right now!

The "Where's My Refund" tool typically shows three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. The time between these stages varies depending on several factors. For electronically filed returns with direct deposit (which sounds like your case), you'll usually see the status change from "Return Received" to "Refund Approved" within 1-2 weeks. Once approved, the "Refund Sent" status usually appears within 24-48 hours, and the money hits your account 1-5 business days after that. The 21-day timeline the IRS mentions is the maximum time for the entire process from submission to deposit for straightforward returns. However, many people receive their refunds much sooner - often within 7-14 days total. Complex returns, returns with certain credits (like EITC), or returns flagged for review will take longer. If you e-filed last week, I'd expect you to see a status change within the next few days, assuming there are no complications with your return.

•Do you know if returns with the Child Tax Credit take longer? I filed with that this year and I'm still stuck on "return received" after 16 days. Getting a bit worried since I was planning to use that money for some bills coming up.

•Returns with tax credits like the Child Tax Credit can indeed take longer to process. The IRS often reviews these returns more carefully, which can add time. While many returns with credits are still processed within the 21-day window, it's not uncommon for them to take the full 21 days or sometimes even longer. If you're at 16 days and still on "Return Received," I wouldn't be too concerned yet. However, if you pass the 21-day mark with no update, you might want to contact the IRS directly. In the meantime, if you're concerned about upcoming bills, you might want to explore alternative payment arrangements just in case.

I've been using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) for tracking my refund status and it's been super helpful. After I submitted my taxes, I was constantly checking the IRS site but wasn't getting much info. A friend recommended taxr.ai and it actually gives you better predictions about your refund timeline based on current IRS processing speeds. What I really like is that you can upload your tax transcript and it analyzes everything - tells you if there might be delays based on your specific situation and gives you a more accurate estimate than the generic "21 days" the IRS says. It also sends notifications when it detects changes in your transcript that might not even show up on Where's My Refund yet.

•Does it actually work with the actual IRS systems or is it just making guesses? I'm worried about giving my tax info to some random website tbh.

•Can you use it if you already filed? I submitted like 2 weeks ago and I'm still on return received. Really need to know when this money is coming cause I gotta pay rent.

•It doesn't directly access IRS systems, but it uses the tax transcript you download from the IRS website to analyze your specific situation. All your data is encrypted and they don't store your sensitive info - just analyze the transcript for processing codes that might indicate where your refund is in the pipeline. Yes, you can absolutely use it if you've already filed! That's exactly when it's most useful. I was in the same boat - filed 2 weeks ago and was stuck on "return received" forever. The tool showed me that my return was actually moving through the system even though the IRS site wasn't updating. It identified patterns in my transcript that suggested my refund would be approved within 3 days, and it was spot on.

Holy crap taxr.ai actually worked for me! I was super skeptical after seeing it mentioned here but decided to try it since I was going crazy checking the IRS site 10x a day. The Where's My Refund tool was still showing "Return Received" after 17 days but taxr.ai showed me that my return was actually in the final processing stage. Sure enough, 2 days later my status changed to "Refund Approved" and I got my direct deposit the next day! The best part was that the tool explained exactly what was happening with my return behind the scenes based on those transcript codes. Saved me so much stress and I was able to plan better knowing exactly when my money would arrive instead of just guessing.

If you're tired of waiting and need to talk to someone at the IRS directly, I'd recommend Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was stuck on "Return Received" for over 3 weeks and getting super frustrated. I tried calling the IRS directly and kept getting the "due to high call volume" message and getting disconnected. Found Claimyr and they actually hold your place in line with the IRS so you don't have to keep redialing. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. When it was my turn, I got a call back and was connected with an IRS agent who could actually see what was happening with my refund. Turns out there was a small issue they needed to verify, and because I was able to talk to someone directly, it was resolved right away.

•Wait how does this even work? The IRS phone system is a nightmare, how does some service magically get you through?

•This sounds like BS honestly. I've been trying to reach the IRS for weeks. If this actually worked, everyone would be using it. Pretty sure this is just a scam to get your money.

•They use a technology that keeps dialing and navigating the IRS phone tree for you. Instead of you having to keep calling back when it's busy, their system holds your place in line. When they reach a live agent, you get a call connecting you directly to that agent. It's basically like having someone else do the annoying part of getting through the phone system. I had the exact same reaction as you when I first heard about it! I thought it was completely fake. I only tried it because I was desperate after weeks of trying to get through myself. I was shocked when I actually got a call back and was talking to a real IRS agent within an hour. They don't promise instant access - they just save you from having to do the redial game yourself. I get why people are skeptical, but it genuinely solved my problem.

I need to eat my words about Claimyr. After posting that skeptical comment, I was still desperate to reach the IRS so I tried it anyway. I ACTUALLY got a call back in about 40 minutes connecting me to an IRS rep. The lady I talked to was able to see that my refund was held up because they were verifying some income I reported from a side gig. She processed the verification while I was on the phone and told me my refund should be approved within 48 hours. Sure enough, my status changed to "Refund Approved" the next day. I would have been waiting for weeks not knowing what was happening if I hadn't been able to talk to someone. For anyone stuck in refund limbo, being able to actually speak with someone at the IRS is seriously worth it.

In my experience, the timing varies a lot from person to person. Last year my return was received and approved within 5 days, and I had the money 3 days after that. This year I'm on day 18 and still at "return received" status. Its super frustrating not knowing whats going on!!! My sister filed a week after me and already got her refund. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it sometimes.

•Do you think its because of your income level or something? I make around 52k and always seem to get mine pretty fast (like 10 days total). Just curious if thats related.

•I don't think income level is the main factor. I made roughly the same amount both years (about 63k), but the processing times were completely different. From what I've researched, it has more to do with the complexity of your return and whether you claimed certain credits or deductions that trigger additional review. This year I claimed some education expenses and a home office deduction for my side business, which I didn't have last year. I suspect those items might be causing the longer processing time, rather than my income level itself. The IRS seems to prioritize simple, straightforward returns for faster processing.

has anyone noticed that the IRS2GO app sometimes shows different status than the website?? my app still shows "received" but when i check on web it says "approved" as of yesterday! maybe try checking both if ur waiting?

•Yes! This happened to me too. The app didn't update for like 2 days after the website showed approved. And then I got my direct deposit before the app even changed to "sent." The app seems to lag behind.

Just a heads up that if you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit, by law the IRS can't issue your refund before mid-February (usually Feb 15th), no matter when you filed. They don't always make this clear when you're filing. This delay is part of their fraud prevention measures. So if you claimed either of those credits and filed in January, that could explain why you're still waiting.

•Oh that's actually super helpful to know! I did claim the EITC this year, which I didn't do in previous years. That would explain the wait then. Thanks for explaining that - the "21 days" messaging from the IRS is definitely misleading in this case.

Just wanted to add that if you're really anxious about the timing (like I was), you can also check your tax transcript on the IRS website. It updates more frequently than the "Where's My Refund" tool and shows processing codes that can give you a better idea of where your return stands. The transcript will show codes like 150 (tax return filed) and 846 (refund issued) along with dates. Sometimes you'll see the 846 code with a date before your "Where's My Refund" status even changes to approved. It's a bit more technical to read but there are guides online that explain what all the codes mean. Also, don't stress too much about checking constantly - I know it's hard not to! The status updates usually happen overnight, so checking once a day in the morning is really all you need to do. Your refund will come!

•This is really good advice about checking the transcript! I had no idea it updated more frequently than the Where's My Refund tool. I've been driving myself crazy refreshing that page multiple times a day. Going to try checking my transcript instead - hopefully it will give me some peace of mind about what's actually happening with my return. Thanks for the tip about only checking once a day too, I definitely needed to hear that!

I'm in the exact same boat! Filed through TurboTax about 10 days ago and have been obsessively checking the Where's My Refund tool. It's reassuring to see I'm not the only one going crazy with the constant checking lol. From what I've gathered reading through these comments, it sounds like the timeline really depends on your specific situation. Simple returns seem to move faster, while anything with credits or deductions can take longer. I claimed some student loan interest deduction this year, so I'm probably looking at the full 21 days. The tip about checking your tax transcript is gold - I just looked mine up and it actually shows more detailed processing codes than the basic status tool. Still nerve-wracking to wait, but at least now I have a better sense of what's happening behind the scenes. Hang in there!

•Same here! I filed about a week ago and I'm definitely in that obsessive checking phase too. It's so hard to be patient when you're not used to getting a refund. The transcript tip has been a game changer - I can actually see some movement even when the main status page hasn't updated yet. I also claimed some education credits this year which I haven't done before, so I'm expecting it might take a bit longer. At least now I know what to look for in the codes instead of just staring at "return received" and wondering if something went wrong. The waiting is still brutal though! @Yara Sabbagh thanks for sharing your experience - it helps to know we re'all in this together.

Same situation here - filed about 8 days ago and checking that tool way too often! Reading through everyone's experiences has been super helpful though. I'm seeing that the timeline really varies based on what you claimed on your return. One thing I noticed is that a lot of people are mentioning the transcript being more informative than the basic status checker. I just pulled mine and wow, there's so much more detail there! Even though my Where's My Refund still says "return received," I can see processing codes that suggest things are actually moving along. For anyone else in the waiting game - I found it helpful to understand that "return received" doesn't mean they're just sitting on it. There's apparently a lot happening behind the scenes during that status. The transcript codes can give you a better sense of the actual progress being made on your return. Still hard to be patient when you're expecting money back, but at least now I feel like I have a better understanding of the process. Thanks everyone for sharing your timelines and tips!

•Exactly! I'm on day 12 of obsessive checking and this thread has been so reassuring. I had no idea about the transcript codes either - just checked mine and you're right, there's way more detail than the basic status page. I'm seeing some codes that suggest my return is actually progressing even though the main tool still shows "return received." It's wild how much is happening behind the scenes that we don't see! I claimed some dependent care expenses this year which I think might be adding to my processing time, but at least now I have a better sense of what's normal vs what would be concerning. Thanks for pointing out that "return received" doesn't mean it's just sitting there - that's definitely helping my anxiety about the whole process!

Thanks for starting this thread! I'm dealing with the exact same situation - filed my return about 9 days ago through TurboTax and I've been refreshing that Where's My Refund page like it's my job. This is my first refund in years too, so I had no idea what to expect timeline-wise. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful. The tip about checking your tax transcript is amazing - I just pulled mine and there are so many more details than the basic status tool shows. Even though I'm still showing "return received," I can see processing codes that indicate things are actually moving along behind the scenes. I claimed some medical expenses and charitable deductions this year that I didn't have in previous years, so based on what everyone's saying, that might extend my processing time a bit. But at least now I understand that the timeline really depends on your specific situation rather than just being a random lottery. The hardest part is definitely the waiting when you're not used to getting money back! But this community has been great for managing expectations and understanding what's normal vs what would be cause for concern.

•Welcome to the obsessive checking club! 😅 I'm about 2 weeks in and just went through the same exact experience. Filed through TurboTax, first refund in forever, and definitely wearing out that refresh button on Where's My Refund. The transcript tip that everyone's mentioned here is seriously a game changer - I wish I had known about it from day one! It's like getting a peek behind the curtain to see what's actually happening instead of just staring at that generic "return received" message. Since you have medical expenses and charitable deductions, you're probably looking at closer to the full 21 days like others have mentioned. I had some education credits that seem to be adding time to mine too. But honestly, just knowing that it's normal for different types of returns to take different amounts of time has helped my sanity so much. Hang in there - we're all in this waiting game together! At least now we know to check the transcript for real updates instead of just hitting refresh on the basic tool all day.
