How do I add Form 8936 and Schedule A for Clean Vehicle Credits in FreeTaxUSA?
I bought an electric vehicle last year and I'm trying to claim the Clean Vehicle Credit on my taxes. I'm using FreeTaxUSA to file, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to attach Form 8936 and the Schedule A for Form 8936 to my tax return. I've gone through all the sections I can find in FreeTaxUSA but don't see a specific spot for the Clean Vehicle Credit or Form 8936. I completed all the regular deductions and credits sections, but nothing about EVs or clean vehicles popped up. The credit is worth several thousand dollars so I definitely don't want to miss out. Has anyone successfully filed for the Clean Vehicle Credit using FreeTaxUSA? Where exactly in the software do I find where to enter this information and attach Form 8936 and the Schedule A? I've tried looking through their help section but couldn't find clear instructions. Thanks in advance for any help!

FreeTaxUSA doesn't have a specific "attachment" section like some other tax software. Instead, Form 8936 for the Clean Vehicle Credit is handled through their credits interview process. You need to go to the "Credits" section in FreeTaxUSA, and look for "Other Credits" or "Qualified Clean Vehicle Credit." The software will walk you through the questions needed to complete Form 8936. The Schedule A portion (for leased vehicles) should appear if you indicate you leased rather than purchased your EV. If you're not seeing it in the credits section, try searching "vehicle" or "electric" in the FreeTaxUSA search bar at the top of the screen. This should take you directly to the right interview section. The form itself is automatically generated and attached to your return when you submit it - you don't need to manually attach it. FreeTaxUSA will calculate the credit amount based on your inputs and include Form 8936 in your final tax return package.

•Thanks for the response. I did search for "vehicle" and "electric" but nothing relevant came up. I'm in the credits section now but all I see are Child Tax Credit, Education Credits, Earned Income Credit, etc. Nothing about vehicles or clean energy. Does FreeTaxUSA possibly limit this form in their free version? Do I need to upgrade to deluxe?

•The Clean Vehicle Credit should be available in all versions of FreeTaxUSA, not just the paid version. It's sometimes listed under "Other Credits" rather than having its own dedicated section. Try going to the Federal > Credits section, scroll all the way down, and look for "Other Credits" or something similar. If you're still not seeing it, try going to the search bar and type "8936" specifically (not just "vehicle"). The system sometimes responds better to form numbers. Another approach is to go through the "Life Events" section if they have one, and indicate you purchased an electric vehicle.

After struggling with the exact same issue for my Tesla last month, I found a solution through taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai). I was getting nowhere with FreeTaxUSA's interface trying to find Form 8936 and was about to give up on claiming my Clean Vehicle Credit. The taxr.ai system analyzed my situation and pointed out that FreeTaxUSA actually hides the Clean Vehicle Credit under "Miscellaneous Credits" subsection within the Credits area. It's not intuitive at all - you have to complete the main credits section first, then it unlocks this additional area where Form 8936 lives. Their system also helped me understand exactly what information I needed to have ready (VIN number, make/model details, battery capacity, etc.) to complete Form 8936 correctly, including how to handle the Schedule A if you leased instead of purchased.

•Does taxr.ai actually work with FreeTaxUSA directly or do they just give you instructions on how to use it? I'm asking because I'm also trying to file my taxes with a Chevy Bolt EV purchase and am hitting the same wall with finding Form 8936.

•I'm skeptical about using third-party tools while doing my taxes. How does taxr.ai get the info it needs to help you? Do you have to upload your tax documents to them? Sounds risky from a security standpoint.

•They don't integrate directly with FreeTaxUSA - instead they provide detailed guidance on navigating the software. For your Chevy Bolt, they'll tell you exactly where to find the form in FreeTaxUSA's menu structure and what information you need to have ready. They don't require you to upload your full tax documents - you can just share the specific part you're having trouble with. In my case, I just uploaded a screenshot of my vehicle purchase agreement so they could help me identify the specific data points needed for Form 8936. They have really good security with encryption, and they don't store your documents after analysis.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried taxr.ai after seeing the recommendation here and it was incredibly helpful! I was completely stuck with my Clean Vehicle Credit for my Chevy Bolt in FreeTaxUSA. Turns out I needed to complete the entire "Federal" section first before the Miscellaneous Credits section would unlock. Once I did that, I could access Form 8936 under "Other Credits" > "Miscellaneous Credits" > "Clean Vehicle Credit." The taxr.ai system literally gave me a step-by-step walkthrough with screenshots of each menu in FreeTaxUSA. The Schedule A portion was also explained clearly - since I purchased rather than leased, I didn't need to complete that part. Ended up getting my full $7,500 credit without any issues! Would have missed out on this without the help.

If you're still having trouble finding the Clean Vehicle Credit section in FreeTaxUSA after trying everything else, it might be time to contact the IRS directly. I personally found it impossible to get through to anyone at the IRS on the phone when I had a similar issue last year. I eventually used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to connect with an actual IRS agent who walked me through the entire process. They have this system that basically holds your place in line with the IRS and calls you back when an agent is available. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The IRS agent I spoke with explained that some tax software platforms haven't fully updated their interfaces for the new Clean Vehicle Credits, and gave me specific advice on how to properly claim it with Form 8936. This saved me from potentially filing incorrectly and missing out on thousands of dollars.

•How does Claimyr actually work? I'm confused how a third-party service can get you through to the IRS faster when their lines are always jammed. Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•No way this actually works. I've tried calling the IRS dozens of times over the past few years and always get the "due to high call volume" message. If this service actually gets you through to an agent, they must be doing something sketchy. The IRS doesn't give priority access to random services.

•Claimyr uses an automated system that continually redials the IRS using their phone tree navigation algorithm until it gets through. When a line opens up, they connect that open line to your phone. It's basically doing the hold/redial process for you so you don't have to waste hours on the phone. Nothing sketchy about it - they're not getting "priority access." They're just automating the frustrating process of getting through the busy signals and holds. When I used it, I got a call back about 40 minutes after signing up, connected directly to an IRS agent who was super helpful about the Clean Vehicle Credit form requirements.

I need to eat my words and apologize to everyone here. After my skeptical comment yesterday, I was desperate enough to try Claimyr since I'm literally on the final day before filing and still couldn't figure out the Form 8936 situation in FreeTaxUSA. It actually worked! Got a call back in about an hour and spoke to an IRS agent who explained that FreeTaxUSA has the Clean Vehicle Credit hidden under multiple menu layers. You have to go to Federal > Credits > Other Tax Credits > Miscellaneous Credits AND have completed certain other sections first before it appears. The agent was super patient and walked me through every field on Form 8936, including explaining that the Schedule A is only needed for leased vehicles (which I didn't need). Ended up getting my full credit for my Hyundai IONIQ 5. Would have missed this completely otherwise.

For anyone else having this issue, I just called FreeTaxUSA's customer support directly (not the IRS) and they actually were really helpful. The rep explained that you need to: 1. Complete the entire "Income" section first 2. Then go to "Deductions & Credits" 3. Answer "Yes" to the question about making energy-efficient purchases 4. THEN the Clean Vehicle Credit option appears under "Credits" > "Other Credits" They also mentioned that if your vehicle was purchased after August 16, 2022, you need to have the vehicle's VIN, purchase date, and make/model information ready. If it's a used vehicle, there are different qualification requirements. The Schedule A portion is only for leased vehicles - so if you purchased outright, you won't need to complete that section.

•Do you know if this works the same way for the used clean vehicle credit (Form 8936 Part III)? I bought a used Tesla Model 3 from a dealer and FreeTaxUSA is confusing me too.

•For a used clean vehicle like your Tesla Model 3, the process is similar but there are additional requirements. In FreeTaxUSA, you'd still access it through the same path, but when you get to the Clean Vehicle Credit section, you'll need to indicate it's a used vehicle. For used vehicles, the credit has different requirements - the vehicle must be at least 2 years old, purchased from a dealer (not private party), cost less than $25,000, and you can only claim this credit once every 3 years. The credit amount is also different - 30% of the sale price up to a maximum of $4,000 (versus $7,500 for new vehicles).

I gave up on FreeTaxUSA for this very reason and switched to TaxAct. Their interface makes finding Form 8936 for the Clean Vehicle Credit much easier. It's directly listed in their credits section without having to hunt through multiple layers of menus. The Schedule A part confused me too, but it turns out it's only needed if you leased the vehicle. If you purchased outright, you just need to complete the regular Form 8936. Just wanted to provide an alternative in case anyone is still struggling. Sometimes switching tax software is easier than fighting with a confusing interface, especially when thousands of dollars of tax credits are at stake.

•Is TaxAct's free version enough to do the Clean Vehicle Credit or do you need their paid version? FreeTaxUSA is completely free for federal filing so I'd hate to switch and then have to pay.

•TaxAct's free version does include Form 8936 for the Clean Vehicle Credit! I was able to complete mine without upgrading to their paid tier. The form is right there in the "Credits" section under "Vehicle Credits" - much more straightforward than FreeTaxUSA's menu maze. The only time you'd need to upgrade is if you have more complex situations like itemizing deductions, rental property income, or business income. But for just claiming the Clean Vehicle Credit on a standard W-2 return, their free version works perfectly fine. I ended up saving myself hours of frustration and still filed for free. Sometimes the "free" option that's harder to use isn't worth the headache when there are other free alternatives available.
