Can I File Form 8936 for 2023 EV Tax Clean Vehicle Credits Now for My Tesla Model Y?
I bought a Tesla Model Y back in June 2023 but completely forgot to include Form 8936 for the $9,500 EV tax credit when I filed my 2023 taxes. Total brain malfunction on my part! Is it too late to file Form 8936 separately now? I'm planning to send it out sometime next week if that's possible. Also wondering about how to actually submit it at this point. I used TurboTax for my original tax filing like I always do. Can I somehow go back into TurboTax and file just the Form 8936 through there? Or am I stuck mailing a paper form to the IRS the old-fashioned way? Any help would be super appreciated since I really don't want to miss out on that credit!

You'll need to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) along with Form 8936 to claim your Clean Vehicle Credit for the Tesla Model Y. Unfortunately, you can't just submit Form 8936 by itself after you've already filed your original return. The good news is that you have plenty of time - you can amend your 2023 return within three years from the date you filed the original return. Since you purchased the vehicle in 2023, you're still well within the timeframe to claim this credit.

•Thanks for the quick response! So I definitely need to file a 1040-X along with the 8936? I was hoping to avoid doing a whole amended return. Do you know if the $9,500 credit is worth the hassle of amending? And how complicated is that process?

•Yes, you definitely need to file Form 1040-X (Amended Return) along with Form 8936. There's no mechanism to just file the 8936 by itself after your original return was submitted. The $7,500 clean vehicle credit (not $9,500) is absolutely worth amending for - that's a significant amount of money! The process isn't overly complicated, especially through TurboTax which can help you file an amended return. You'll indicate the changes to your tax liability based on the credit, complete Form 8936, and submit everything together.

Hey there! I had almost the exact same situation with my Model Y last year. I totally spaced on including Form 8936 when I filed. I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it saved me so much stress! I uploaded my purchase documents and tax forms, and it walked me through exactly how to amend my return to get the full EV credit. It even highlighted which parts of Form 1040-X needed changes and pre-filled Form 8936 with all the vehicle info. Way easier than trying to figure it all out myself!

•I'm looking at doing something similar. Did taxr.ai handle the actual filing of the amended return or did you still need to submit everything yourself? Not sure how that part works.

•Sounds too good to be true tbh. I thought you needed VIN numbers and specific Tesla info to fill out Form 8936 correctly. Does this thing actually know all the Model Y specs and which ones qualify for the credit? Tesla changed their battery suppliers mid-2023 which affected eligibility.

•It doesn't file for you - it prepares all the documentation and gives you step-by-step instructions for submitting your amendment, but you still handle the actual submission yourself. I printed and mailed mine, but they provided options for e-filing too. The tool actually asks for your VIN and purchase date, then checks it against their database of qualifying vehicles. In my case, it confirmed my Model Y qualified based on when and where it was manufactured. It also highlighted which parts of the battery met the critical mineral and component requirements for the full credit. Super thorough!

Just wanted to update you all! I tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here and it was seriously impressive. Uploaded my Tesla purchase agreement and tax info, and within minutes it had processed everything for my 2023 Model Y. It confirmed I was eligible for the full $7,500 credit and generated a complete amendment package with Form 8936 already filled out with all the technical details I would've definitely gotten wrong on my own. The step-by-step instructions made the amendment process way less intimidating than I expected. Already mailed everything off and now just waiting for my refund!

If you're planning to amend to claim the EV credit, you should know the IRS is absolutely swamped with amended returns right now. I tried calling them for weeks about my amended return (for a different issue) and could never get through - just endless holds and disconnects. Finally I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and watched their demo (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). They got me connected to an actual IRS agent in less than an hour when I'd been trying for over a month on my own. The agent confirmed my amendment was received and gave me a timeframe for processing. Saved me so much frustration!

•How does this actually work? Does Claimyr just keep calling the IRS for you or something? I don't understand how they get through when nobody else can.

•Yeah right. So you're telling me this service somehow magically gets past the IRS phone system that literally everyone complains about? The same IRS that has like a 2% answer rate? Sorry but I'm extremely skeptical. Sounds like they just take your money and you end up waiting on hold anyway.

•They use a system that navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line. When they're about to connect with an agent, you get a call and they connect you directly. It's not magic - just technology that automates the frustrating part of waiting on hold. I was skeptical too, but it absolutely works. They don't just "keep calling" - they have a system that stays in the queue and monitors for when a live person picks up. I connected with an IRS representative who pulled up my amended return information and confirmed it was in process, which was the peace of mind I needed.

Wow, I need to eat my words about Claimyr. After posting my skeptical comment, I decided to try it anyway out of desperation since I hadn't heard anything about my amended return for months. Their system actually worked exactly as described - I got a text when I was next in line, then connected directly to an IRS agent who was able to check on my amended return status. Found out it was approved but had been sent to a different department for additional processing. The agent gave me a specific timeframe and confirmation number I never would have gotten without speaking to someone. Definitely worth it after wasting hours trying to call myself!

Just a heads up - make sure your Tesla Model Y actually qualifies for the full $7,500 credit for 2023. The rules changed throughout the year about battery components and critical minerals requirements. Some Model Ys only qualified for partial credits depending on when they were manufactured and where the battery components came from. Check your VIN on Tesla's website or contact them directly to confirm before you go through the hassle of amending.

•Thanks for that info, I wasn't aware the credit might be different based on manufacturing dates. My VIN starts with LYV which I think means it was built in the Fremont factory? I purchased in June 2023 but not sure exactly when it was manufactured. Is there an easy way to check this?

•Tesla has a lookup tool on their website where you can enter your VIN to check eligibility. For June 2023 purchases, most Model Ys qualified for the full credit, but it's always good to verify. The Fremont-built models (which yours appears to be based on the LYV prefix) should qualify for the full $7,500 if purchased after April 18, 2023, when the Treasury finalized their guidance. For extra confirmation, you could log into your Tesla account where the purchase documents sometimes include manufacturing information. The IRS also published a list of qualifying vehicles that you can cross-reference with your specific vehicle details.

When you file the amended return with Form 8936, be prepared to wait much longer than usual for your refund. I amended for the EV credit back in February and still waiting. The IRS website still shows "received" as the status. 😤

•I amended for the same reason in March and got my refund about 16 weeks later. The "Where's My Amended Return" tool never updated beyond "received" but the money showed up in my account. Check your bank account - it might have come through already!

I'm in a very similar situation! Just realized I forgot to claim the EV credit for my Model Y purchased in August 2023. Reading through all these responses has been super helpful - sounds like I definitely need to file Form 1040-X with Form 8936. Quick question for everyone who's been through this process: How long did it actually take from mailing your amended return to getting the refund? I'm seeing conflicting timeframes here - some saying 16 weeks, others still waiting since February. Also, did anyone try e-filing the amendment or is mail the only option for this situation? Thanks for all the detailed info, especially about checking VIN eligibility and the various tools mentioned. This community is awesome!

•Welcome to the amended return club! Based on my experience and what I've seen others report here, processing times seem to vary quite a bit. I filed my 1040-X with Form 8936 in January and got my refund after about 20 weeks - definitely longer than the typical 16 weeks they quote, but it did come through eventually. For e-filing, unfortunately most tax software (including TurboTax) doesn't support e-filing amended returns with Form 8936 yet. I ended up having to print and mail everything. Make sure to send it certified mail so you have proof of delivery - that really helps if you need to call and check on status later. One tip: keep copies of absolutely everything and take photos of your mailed package. The IRS "Where's My Amended Return" tool is pretty unreliable, so having your own documentation helps a lot if you need to follow up. Good luck with your amendment!
