Can I file a 1098-T from 2023 in the 2025 tax season?
So I just realized I completely spaced on reporting my 1098-T form from 2023 on my taxes. I filed on time that year but somehow forgot to include my tuition info. Now I'm getting ready for the 2025 tax season and submitting my 2024 1098-T, when I realized I never got the education credit for 2023! Is it too late to get that money back? Can I still amend my 2023 return even though it's been over a year? Kicking myself right now because I really could use that education credit money. Anyone know if there's a cutoff for this kind of thing? I'm also wondering if it will cause problems if I suddenly file a 1098-T from 2023 while also filing my 2024 form for this upcoming tax season.

Yes, you can still amend your 2023 tax return to claim the education credits from your 1098-T! The IRS allows you to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) generally within 3 years from the date you filed your original return or within 2 years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Since 2023 returns were filed in 2024, you're well within that timeframe. You'll need to file a paper Form 1040-X along with any schedules that change as a result of adding the education credit (like Schedule 3 and Form 8863 for education credits). Make sure to attach copies of your 1098-T and any other supporting documents for your education expenses. This won't affect your 2024 return that you'll file in 2025 at all - they're completely separate tax years. You can claim both years' education credits without any issues.

•When filing the 1040-X for a prior year, do you use the tax forms from that specific year or the current year's forms? Also, any idea how long it takes the IRS to process an amended return these days?

•You need to use the tax forms from the specific year you're amending - so you'd need to use 2023 tax forms. The IRS keeps prior year forms on their website, so you can download the 2023 versions of Form 1040-X, Form 8863, etc. Never mix different years' forms. The IRS is currently taking about 16-20 weeks to process amended returns, sometimes longer. You can check the status of your amended return on the IRS website using their "Where's My Amended Return?" tool after about 3 weeks from when you mail it.

Been in almost the exact same situation with my education credits from 2022! I was freaking out thinking I'd lost that money forever until I found https://taxr.ai which analyzes all your tax documents and actually found several missed deductions for me, including my 1098-T that I forgot to claim. Their system flagged it immediately and showed me exactly how to amend my return. The whole process took maybe 30 minutes tops and their AI found other stuff I missed too.

•How does it work with older returns? Does it automatically fill out the amendment forms or just tell you what you missed? I'm terrible with tax forms and worried I'll mess up the amendment.

•Sounds too good to be true. An AI that magically finds tax breaks? I've been burned by tax software before that claimed to find everything but missed obvious credits. How is this different?

•It doesn't fill out the forms for you, but it gives you clear step-by-step instructions for exactly what forms you need and what numbers go where. It basically creates a checklist for you to follow with all the info from your documents. You still need to complete the actual amendment forms, but it's like having someone guiding you through every step. The difference from regular tax software is it actually reviews your past returns and compares them against your documents to find mismatches or missed opportunities. It's not about magical tax breaks - it's about catching the obvious stuff most people miss, like education credits from forms they forgot to enter. In my case, I had totally overlooked the 1098-T just like you did.

Just wanted to update - I tried the taxr.ai service that was mentioned and holy crap it actually worked! Uploaded my 2023 return and my 1098-T and it immediately spotted that I missed out on about $1,800 in education credits! It generated all the instructions for filing my amendment and even highlighted the specific lines I needed to change on the 1040-X. Just mailed it off yesterday. Super relieved and definitely wouldn't have figured this out on my own. Thanks for the recommendation!

If you need to talk to the IRS about this, just be prepared for a nightmare trying to reach them. After I filed my amended return for a similar education credit issue, I needed to check on something specific and spent DAYS trying to get through. Ended up using https://claimyr.com which got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. They basically hold your place in the phone queue so you don't have to stay on hold forever. Was initially suspicious but it saved me hours of frustration.

•Wait I don't get it. How does some random website help you get through to the IRS faster? Doesn't everyone have to wait in the same phone queue? I'm confused how this actually works.

•Yeah right. No way this actually works. The IRS phone system is deliberately designed to be impossible to navigate. If there was some magic workaround, everyone would be using it. This sounds like a scam to get desperate people's money.

•It's not about skipping the queue - they use a combination of technology and staff to navigate the IRS phone tree and wait on hold for you. When they finally reach a human, they call you and connect you directly to the agent. You don't have to sit through the whole wait yourself. It works because most people give up after 30+ minutes on hold, but their system just keeps trying and waiting. Nothing magical about it - just taking the waiting burden off you. I was just as skeptical initially but when they connected me to an actual IRS agent after all my failed attempts, I was sold.

Well I stand corrected! I was the one who called BS on that Claimyr service above, but I was desperate enough to try it last week after getting nowhere with the IRS for 3 weeks straight. Not gonna lie, I was shocked when my phone rang and there was an actual IRS agent on the line ready to help me. Took about 40 minutes from when I submitted my number until they called me. The agent even helped me understand exactly what I needed to include with my amended return for my missed education credits. Saved myself hours of my life I would've wasted on hold. Consider me a convert.

Don't forget to calculate if the education credit is actually worth amending for. I amended a return for a missed 1098-T and after all the paperwork, I only got back $247. Barely worth the hassle. Make sure you estimate your potential refund first!

•How do I estimate what I might get back before going through the whole amendment process? Is there a quick way to check if my tuition expenses would result in a decent credit?

•The quickest way is to look at your qualifying education expenses on your 1098-T (usually in Box 1) and then estimate based on which credit you're eligible for. If you qualify for the American Opportunity Credit, you could get up to $2,500 (100% of the first $2,000 in expenses and 25% of the next $2,000). If you're limited to the Lifetime Learning Credit, it's 20% of up to $10,000 in expenses, so maximum $2,000. Your income also matters - both credits phase out at higher income levels. If you have your 2023 return handy, check your AGI (adjusted gross income) to see if you'd face any reductions in the credit amount.

I'm in a similar spot but with a 1098-T from 2022. Which tax software is best for filing an amended return like this? Can the free ones handle it?

•Most free tax software doesn't support amended returns. I used TaxAct for my amendment and it cost about $45 for the deluxe version that handles education credits. TurboTax and H&R Block also do amendments but they're pricier ($60-80). If you're comfortable with forms, you can do it manually with the free fillable PDFs from the IRS website.

Just want to emphasize what others have said - you're definitely not too late! I missed claiming my 1098-T for 2021 and successfully amended in 2023. The key thing is to be thorough with your paperwork. Make copies of everything before you mail it, and definitely use certified mail or priority mail with tracking when you send your 1040-X to the IRS. One tip that saved me time: before you start the amendment process, call your school's financial aid office and ask them to verify the amounts on your 1098-T. Sometimes there are corrections or additional qualifying expenses they can clarify that might increase your credit. I discovered I had additional fees that qualified but weren't originally reported on my form. Also, don't stress about filing both your 2023 amendment and your 2024 return in the same season - the IRS processes these completely independently. Just make sure you're using the correct year's forms for each filing!
