H&R Block Return Shows MetaBank Account - Not My Bank Info!

Just realized something super weird with our refund... We normally have our taxes back by now, and last night I started wondering if maybe I entered my account number wrong. So I went back to H&R Block and reviewed my tax return from this year - the routing and account numbers shown aren't the same ones I entered when I filed! Now it's connected to something called MetaBank?? I'm completely confused and have no idea what I'm supposed to do about this. Has anyone else had this happen?

H&R Block partners with MetaBank for their Refund Transfer product. If you opted for their Refund Transfer service (where they deduct their preparation fees from your refund), they set up a temporary account with MetaBank to receive your refund, take out their fees, then send the remainder to your personal account. Check if you selected this option when filing - it usually costs extra.

Omg... I think that's exactly what happened. I remember they asked if I wanted to pay the filing fees out of my refund and I said yes because I was short on cash at the time. So this is normal? How long does it usually take for the money to get from MetaBank to my actual account?

This happened to me last year! The Refund Transfer adds about 5-7 days to the process in my experience. You can check the status by looking at your H&R Block account online or using their app. They should have given you information about tracking your refund through them rather than directly with the IRS.

If you want to understand exactly what's happening with your refund, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript when this happened to me. It explained the whole process including the MetaBank transfer timeline. It showed me exactly when the IRS sent the money to MetaBank and predicted when it would hit my actual bank account. Super helpful for peace of mind!

Is that service free? I'm always skeptical about these tax helper sites.

There's a free version that gives you basic transcript analysis. I used the paid version ($20 I think?) because I wanted the detailed timeline predictions. Totally worth it for me since I was freaking out about where my money was. But you could try the free version first and see if it helps.

This is completely normal but honestly kind of sneaky how they don't make it super clear. The Refund Transfer product usually adds 5-10 days to your refund timeline. If you're in a rush, call H&R Block directly and ask for status - sometimes they can expedite.

If you need to reach H&R Block about this and keep getting stuck in their phone tree, try Claimyr.com. I used it when I had the same MetaBank issue last year and couldn't get through to a human at H&R Block. Got connected to an actual person in about 10 minutes who could check my specific refund status. Saved me hours of frustration! https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Thank you!! I tried calling them this morning and gave up after 25 minutes on hold. I'll definitely check this out if I don't see the money by the end of the week.

Pro tip for next year: NEVER agree to have fees taken out of your refund. They don't make it obvious, but you're basically taking out a high-interest loan. The convenience fee for Refund Transfer is usually $40-$70 just to get your own money a few days faster. Always pay for tax prep upfront if possible!

Lesson definitely learned! I had no idea they were charging me extra for this. Will definitely pay upfront next year.
