FreeTaxUSA filers - anyone else stuck waiting for refund after DDD passed?

I filed through FreeTaxUSA on April 12th and got my direct deposit date of May 3rd. Its now May 17th and still nothing in my account. Checked the refund status on the IRS website and it still shows the May 3rd date as when I should have received it. Called my bank and they said they haven't received anything from IRS. This is frustrating since I was counting on that money. Has anyone else who filed through FreeTaxUSA experiencing delays with their refunds? Starting to wonder if its a FreeTaxUSA issue or just the IRS being slow.

Jamal Washington

The issue is likely not with FreeTaxUSA but with the IRS or potentially your bank. When you get a Direct Deposit Date (DDD), that means the IRS has approved your refund and scheduled it to be sent to your bank. If it's been more than 5 business days since your DDD, you should call the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954. Make sure the bank account info you entered on your return is correct - if there was an error, the deposit would be rejected and the IRS would mail a paper check instead, which takes additional 2-4 weeks. Also check your transcript on the IRS website if you can access it - it might show additional codes that explain the delay, like if there was a refund freeze or offset. Sometimes refunds get held for review even after a DDD is issued.

Thank u for the detailed response! I double checked and the bank info is correct. I've been trying to call that number but can never get through to an actual person 😩

Getting through to the IRS is like trying to win the lottery these days 🙄 I waited on hold for 3 hours last month

there's actually a service called claimyr.com that can help you get through to an IRS agent. it saved me hours of hold time when i had a similar issue. they call and wait in the queue for you and then connect you when an agent is available.

The best way to understand what's happening with your return is using taxr.ai - it's a tool that actually analyzes what's going on with your transcript and explains everything in plain english. I was in a similar situation where my refund was stuck and the IRS website wasn't helpful at all. Taxr showed me exactly what was happening with my return and even predicted when I'd actually get my money. Way better than trying to decode all those weird IRS codes yourself or posting online hoping someone knows. https://taxr.ai seriously saved me so much stress!

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read the transcript! It explains every code, tells you what's actually happening behind the scenes, predicts accurate timelines, and even shows you what steps you need to take next. I was completely lost before using it - the IRS website just showed "processing" for weeks. With taxr I found out exactly why my refund was delayed and what was happening. It's like having an IRS insider explaining everything to you personally.

It's honestly the best money I've ever spent on a tax tool - saved me from taking a day off work to sit on hold with the IRS. Plus I actually understood what was happening instead of just guessing. For the peace of mind alone it was worth every penny!

After waiting 3 weeks past my DDD with no answers, I finally got someone on the phone to help with this exact problem. I used a calling app from claimyr.com and got through to an actual human at the IRS in about 45 minutes. They told me my refund had been flagged for a secondary review but was just released. Money showed up in my account two days later! Without talking to someone I'd probably still be waiting and wondering.

Wait is this for real? How much does the service cost?

It was totally worth it for the time it saved me. I had been trying to get through for WEEKS with no luck. The agent I spoke with was able to immediately see what was happening with my refund and release it. Talking to an actual IRS person got my issue resolved in minutes instead of waiting god knows how long.

I get why ppl are skeptical, but it saved me so much time and frustration. You can keep trying to call yourself if you want. I just know I tried for weeks with no luck before using this service.

I used FreeTaxUSA too, had a DDD of April 21 and didnt get my money until May 2. Bank said same thing - they never got a deposit from IRS. Turns out there was some verification thing happening behind the scenes. The IRS is a dumpster fire this year 🔥🗑️

Check if you have any past due debts like student loans, back taxes, or child support. This time of year the IRS auto-redirects refunds to pay those off. They're supposed to mail you a letter about it but sometimes it shows up after your DDD.

Don't have any of those, my credit is pretty good and I don't owe any back taxes that I know of. Really weird situation

Maybe check with the offset hotline just to be sure: 800-304-3107. Sometimes there can be debts you don't even know about or mistakes in the system.

Yo same thing happened to me!! Filed on FreeTaxUSA in February, got my state refund fast but federal was ghost. My DDD was march 10 and i didn't see the money until almost april. The IRS is slow AF this year

make sure the bank info you entered is correct with ur RTN and account number. i've heard of people putting in the wrong info and then the refund gets kicked back to IRS and they mail u a check instead

Triple checked and it's def correct. Same account I've used for years and got my refund in last year.

The IRS is particularly behind this year. I had to wait 6 weeks after my DDD before my refund appeared. No real explanation from them either when I finally got through on the phone. The agent just said there was a "processing delay" whatever that means 🙄

I called right when they opened at 7am and still waited for 2 hours. It's ridiculous how understaffed they are

I used claimyr.com and got a callback within an hour. So much better than waiting on hold all day. The agent told me my refund had a random verification flag that was cleared up as soon as I talked to them.

This has nothing to do with FreeTaxUSA. The same thing happens with TurboTax, H&R Block, etc. It's all the IRS being slow af. They're using computers from like 1982 or something and everything is falling apart over there.

Did you check your transcript at irs.gov? You need to make an account but it shows more detail than the Where's My Refund tool. My DDD was wrong on WMR but transcript had the correct date.

Try using taxr.ai - I couldn't access my transcript either but they were able to help me understand what was going on with my refund. Seriously helped when I was in the same boat.

it COULD be an issue with offset - sometimes they take ur refund to pay other govt debts without telling u upfront. call the TOP (Treasury Offset Program) at 800-304-3107 to check if your refund was offset.

Check your bank account details on the return. If there is ONE digit wrong in your account or routing number, it wont go thru. if that hapens the IRS will mail a paper check but that takes 6-8 weeks after the failed direct deposit. Double check your return PDF

I checked and the bank details are definitely right. I even confirmed with my bank that they use the same routing number I entered. So strange

The IRS is currently experiencing major delays with processing returns. I work in accounting and seeing tons of clients with similar issues this year - DDD passes and nothing happens. Usually takes 2-3 weeks after the DDD to actually hit accounts these days.

i was in the EXACT SAME SITUATION last month!!! filed thru freetaxusa, got my DDD, and crickets for weeks. i finally called using that claimyr service someone mentioned above. turns out my refund got pulled for a "random verification" but they never sent me a letter. the agent released it right away and i got my money 2 days later. sometimes u NEED to talk to a human to get anything done with the irs

-

The IRS and their "random" verification 🙄 bet half the returns are sitting in some forgotten digital pile. they need to update their whole system

for real! the agent literally said "oh this should have been processed 3 weeks ago, let me fix that" like it was nothing. meanwhile I'm over here stressing and checking my bank account 10x a day

This happened to me too. Turns out when I pulled my transcript with taxr.ai it showed a code 570 (refund hold) followed by a 571 (hold released) but there was still a delay of about 2 weeks after the hold was lifted before the money showed up. The IRS processes are so slow this year it's ridiculous.

It's a tool that reads your IRS transcript and explains what's happening in plain English - shows all the codes and dates in a way that actually makes sense. I was trying to decode my transcript for hours before finding it. Totally worth checking out at taxr.ai if you're confused about what's happening with your refund.

freeTaxUSA has nothing to do with how fast ur money comes. they just submit the return. after that its all on the irs. and the irs is a HOT MESS this year 🤡

Sometimes the bank holds the deposit for a few days after receiving it from the IRS. Have you spoken with a supervisor at your bank? Ask them specifically to check for pending ACH transfers from the Treasury.

Zoe Papadopoulos

I talked to my bank and they swear they haven't received anything from the Treasury or IRS. Even had them check for pending transactions. Nothing.

When you say DDD, was this from the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website? If so, that's usually reliable. If the date has passed by more than 5 business days, something's wrong. Could be they're sending a check instead of direct deposit.
