First time ever checking my state tax refund status and I'm confused about what I'm looking at. The number shown - is this what I'm getting back or what I need to pay? Total newbie here so please don't judge!

Without seeing the actual numbers and which state you're in, it's hard to give specific advice. Generally, if you see a positive number, that's your refund. If it's negative or has a balance due notice, that means you owe. Could you share which state and what exactly you're seeing?
