First Time Filer: Normal to Be Stuck on "Return Received" Status with Tax Topic 152 for 12 Days?
I filed my 2024 taxes as Single about 12 days ago, and when I check WMR, it's still showing "Return Received and Processing" status. The exact message states "We have received your tax return and it is being processed." When I look at the WMR tool, it shows three stages with question marks next to each one: - Received ✓ - Approved ? - Refund Sent ? The message on the screen specifically says "We have received your tax return and it is being processed. If you filed a complete and accurate tax return, your refund should be issued within 21 days of the received date. However, processing may take longer under certain circumstances. Please check here or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go, to check on your refund status." It also shows Tax Topic 152, Refund Information under the "Helpful Information" section that says "Please read the following information related to your tax situation: Tax Topic 152, Refund Information" My personal tax information displayed shows: Tax Year: 2024 Filing Status: Single This is my first time filing, so I'm trying to understand if this is normal progression. Does anyone know if staying in this "received and processing" stage with Tax Topic 152 means approval is coming soon, or should I expect to need verification? What should I expect for the remaining stages (Approved and Refund Sent)? I'm a bit anxious since this is my first time going through the process, and I'm not sure if the "processing" status for 12 days is typical or if something might be wrong with my return.

The status display shows you're at the first of three stages in the IRS refund process - "Return Received." The WMR tool displays a clear progression path: Received → Approved → Refund Sent, and you're currently at stage one. Your specific status message "We have received your tax return and it is being processed" with Tax Topic 152 is the standard initial confirmation. This is perfectly normal for a return filed 12 days ago, as the IRS's standard processing window is 21 days. Tax Topic 152 is simply a general reference code for refund information and doesn't indicate any issues. The details shown confirm your 2024 tax year filing with Single status. The IRS updates their system overnight (typically between 3-6am EST), so checking WMR daily will give you the most current status. The "certain circumstances" mentioned in the message refer to situations like identity verification needs or math error corrections, but these aren't indicated in your current status. Most straightforward returns move to "Approved" status within the 21-day window, followed quickly by "Refund Sent." Since you're at day 12, you're still well within the normal processing timeframe.

Quick tip: instead of checking WMR constantly and trying to decode these vague messages, try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your actual transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when to expect your refund. Only costs a buck but totally worth it. https://taxr.ai

•Yeah its crazy accurate! It looks at all your transcript codes and gives you a specific timeline. Way better than the guessing game with WMR

The key is to check your transcript instead of WMR. Transcripts update first and show way more info. Here's what all those codes mean and what to look for to know when your refund is coming...

If its been more than 21 days call the IRS tax advocate service. They can help push things along if there's an issue.
