Finally got 846 code for 3/5 after IP PIN disaster - Most stressful tax season ever!

Finally!!!!! 846 code for 3/5. Good grief this was the most stressful tax year ever. I was accepted on 1/24 this year. I made the HUGE mistake of filing for an IP PIN after my return was already accepted. Had to wait the full 21 days while my transcripts stayed completely blank and received zero notices too. Just like last year when they held my refund for 3 months over a simple math error. I talked to an advocate again last night demanding some kind of answer or timeline - I've got bills to pay and three kids with spring activities starting. They finally told me my return would be processed by March 14th. And then what do ya know... woke up this morning with all the codes on my transcript. Holy cow what a headache!!! But at least it's coming soon. The IRS seriously needs to fix their communication system.

I'm glad to hear you finally got your 846 code. It seems like the IP PIN request after filing is what likely caused the delay. This happens sometimes when security protocols intersect with already-submitted returns. The system may have temporarily flagged your return while verifying your identity, which could explain the blank transcripts during that period. It's good that you reached out to an advocate - they often can help move things along.

Isn't it interesting how the timing worked out? You speak with an advocate who gives you a March 14th date, and then suddenly your transcript updates the very next day? This is why I always tell people to be persistent with the IRS. Sometimes just getting your case in front of the right person can shake things loose, wouldn't you agree?

Thx for explaining this! I've been wondering why ppl should wait to request IP PINs. Makes total sense now. The IRS rly needs to make this clearer on their website tbh. Glad OP got their DDD finally!

Last year I had a similar issue with my IP PIN but it took nearly 8 weeks to resolve. Did you notice if there were any particular codes on your transcript before the 846 appeared? I'm tracking mine carefully this year and trying to avoid the same issues.

I'm sort of in a similar situation right now, with blank transcripts and feeling pretty anxious about when my refund might come through. I think I might try using https://taxr.ai to help me understand what's happening with my transcripts once they finally update. From what I understand, it can possibly explain all those confusing codes and give you a better idea of what's actually happening with your return? I've heard it might be especially helpful when you have unusual situations like the IP PIN issue you mentioned.

I had almost the exact same experience this year: • Filed and accepted on 1/29 • Requested IP PIN on 2/5 (big mistake) • Transcripts blank for 32 days • Called advocate on day 30 • Transcripts updated 2 days later • 846 code with DDD of 3/7 Would you mind sharing if you had any cycle codes on your transcript? Just want to confirm if our situations really are identical.

Thank you for sharing this timeline! It really helps me understand what happened with my return. I had cycle code 20240805 when my transcript finally updated. According to Publication 1544, the IP PIN verification can trigger a manual review when requested after submission. I'm relieved to see others had this resolve relatively quickly.

I went through this exact nightmare last year. Here's what happened and how I fixed it: Step 1: Filed early February and was accepted Step 2: Requested IP PIN a week later not realizing the issue Step 3: Transcripts stayed blank for 6 weeks Step 4: Called regular IRS number 12 times with no answer Step 5: Finally reached an advocate who explained the verification hold Step 6: Had to verify identity again through ID.me Step 7: Refund processed within 72 hours after verification The key is getting someone to manually review your return. The system gets confused when you request security measures after filing. Time is critical here - every day matters when you're waiting for your money!

I waited exactly 43 days this year with blank transcripts. Called the IRS 17 times and spent a total of 9 hours on hold. Finally used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in exactly 22 minutes. The agent confirmed my return was stuck in identity verification because I had requested an IP PIN after filing. They manually released the hold while I was on the call. My transcript updated with all codes exactly 36 hours later with 846 code for direct deposit 5 days after that. The $20 I spent saved me weeks of waiting and countless hours of frustration trying to reach someone.

Wait, you have to pay to talk to the IRS? That seems kind of unfair for something our tax dollars should already cover. Is this service really necessary? I'm surprised there isn't a free alternative for something so important.

The IP PIN post-submission verification protocol creates what's called a TC 570 freeze code on your account. This essentially halts all processing until manual verification occurs. The IRS Master File system requires sequential processing of all verification elements before a Determination of Refund Eligibility (DORE) can be completed. Your 846 code indicates the final stage of Direct Deposit Scheduling has been initiated with a projected completion date of March 5th.
