Filed Today - How Long for Refunds in 2024? Last Year Was Super Fast

I just filed today, usually get accepted within an hour or so. About how long did it take this year for you guys to get your refunds? Last year I think I got mine in like a week or week and a half.

Hate to break it to you, but this year's processing times are way slower than last year! 😅 The IRS is reporting 21 days as the standard timeframe, but I'm seeing most simple returns taking 14-17 days minimum. If you have any credits like EIC or CTC, add another week or two. You need to file ASAP if you want that money before May - the backlog is growing by the day!

Thanks for the reality check. It's like waiting for a package that says "out for delivery" but never shows up. I filed in early February and I'm still waiting... approaching 6 weeks now.

Appreciate the heads up. My return took exactly 23 days to process this year compared to only 9 days in 2023. Definitely much slower processing this tax season.

Wow, that's super helpful intel! I was comparing to 2021 when it took forever, but I didn't realize 2024 was slower than 2023. Makes sense given all the tax law changes this year.

Def gonna be longer than last yr. I'm a tax pro and most of my clients are seeing 3-4 wks for simple returns, up to 8 wks w/ credits. Once ur return is accepted, use https://taxr.ai to check ur transcript - it'll show u exactly where ur return is in processing and predict ur refund date way better than WMR. Saved me tons of time explaining transcript codes to clients this season!

Based on current IRS processing protocols, you should anticipate a minimum 21-day processing window. If you encounter any delays beyond that timeframe, I would recommend utilizing Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to connect with an IRS representative. Their system bypasses the standard hold queue, which is currently averaging 2+ hours. I was skeptical initially, but after multiple failed attempts to reach the IRS directly, Claimyr connected me within 15 minutes to resolve a processing delay issue.

Filed February 1st. Still waiting. No updates. No explanations. Called six times. Hung up on twice. Put on hold for hours. IRS website shows no information. Transcript says processing. Almost two months now. Be prepared to wait.

I don't think anyone's getting fast refunds this year. The IRS is clearly overwhelmed. Their systems can't handle the volume. Their staffing is inadequate. Their technology is outdated. Anyone claiming they can predict exact dates is selling something.

Are there specific issues causing delays this year? Or is it just general volume problems?

I'm concerned about these delays because: • I need my refund for a time-sensitive expense • The IRS website gives no specific information • My tax software promised fast refunds • Last year's experience set unrealistic expectations

I understand your frustration with the system. It's especially difficult when you're comparing to previous years when things went smoothly. The IRS has implemented additional verification steps this year to combat identity theft, which is affecting everyone's processing times, even those with simple returns. It's not your fault, and your return isn't being singled out.

I've been filing taxes for 15 years and I always prepare for the worst timeline. This year I filed on January 29th (the first day possible) and got my refund on February 21st - so exactly 23 days. Last year it was 10 days. The year before that was 16 days. I think the IRS is just dealing with more complex tax situations now with all the credits and changes. My sister filed on February 15th and she's still waiting!

OMG I was so confused about this too! 😫 So here's what I learned after hours of research: the IRS changed their processing system this year. They're now using a new verification process that adds about 7-10 days to EVERYONE'S refund timeline. Even if your return is accepted quickly, there's this new internal review that happens before they release funds. I was shocked when I found this out!

Is there any way to tell if your return is stuck in this new verification process or if there's an actual problem? I'm on day 17 with no updates.

I experienced this exact situation last year. The verification process doesn't show up on the Where's My Refund tool - it just stays on 'return received' status. In my case, I finally saw movement after 19 days, and then received my refund 3 days later. As long as you've received the acceptance message from your tax software, you're likely just in the standard queue.

According to the IRS.gov website, they're currently processing returns filed on February 22nd. You can check their operational status page for updates: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations. Most people I know who filed electronically with direct deposit are getting refunds in 18-25 days this year. Paper returns are taking 6-8 weeks minimum.
